Background
I found this internship from contacting a woman at the Hospital who deals with
internship placements. I have always wanted to gain experience from working in a
psychiatric hospital, and Butler strongly appealed to me because of its reputation
and proximity to where I live. I was eager to be placed anywhere in Butler to intern,
just to get my foot in the door. Luckily, a nurse manager was looking or a summer
intern for the ADI unit (alcohol detox inpatient).
Professional Objectives
Objective 1: To gain a deeper understanding of drug and alcohol addiction
Activities/Resources
1. Sitting in on all group meetings, which include, AAA, NA, community, family,
and after-care planning meetings.
2. Interacting with patients and staff
Evidence:
1. Include in my portfolio evidence I have attended meetings
Objective 2: Understand the difference between alcohol and drug abusers, and the
warning signs involved.
Activities/ Resources:
1. Reading patients charts, and getting to know the patients on an individual
basis, to understand the nature of their illness.
Evidence:Include in my portfolio a personal statement of my experience
Objective 3: Learning strategies to prevent relapse in patients
Activities/ Resources:
1. Hopefully having the opportunity to hold a group pertained to this area of
recovery.
2. Interacting with patients and developing a relationship with them.
Evidence: Agenda of group meeting and detailed notes on what was discussed.

2. Internship Details
Duties include:
1. Maintaining appearance of unit
2. Observing and interacting with patients
3. Reading patient charts
4. Soon to be discharging patients
Evaluation Methods:
1. Weekly 30 minute meetings with my supervisor
Expected work Schedule
Monday 7:45 am-3:00 pm
Wednesday 10:00 am-3:00 pm
Thursday 12:00pm -8:00pm
