INFECTION CONTROL AND CAUTI PREVENTION โ MUST READ ARTICLES
1. Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology. (2014, April). APIC Implementation Guides. (A. f.
(AHRQ), Ed.) Retrieved September 6, 2014, from Guide to Preventing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections:
http://apic.org/Resource_/EliminationGuideForm/0ff6ae59-0a3a-4640-97b5-eee38b8bed5b/File/CAUTI_06.pdf
This is the most recent guide to preventing CAUTI from Association for Professionals in Infection Control (APIC)
and contains must-know information. This guide is your Bible. It provides MUST KNOW information, if you are
going to be perceived as a credible CAUTI consultant:
๏ท Epidemiology and pathogenesis of CAUTI
๏ท National CAUTI prevention initiatives
๏ท CAUTI risk assessment techniques for hospitals
๏ท CAUTI definitions, surveillance, and reporting
๏ท Patient safety, CUSP, and other behavioral models
๏ท CAUTI prevention
๏ท CAUTI prevention in children and special population
In addition to the above, you need to be an expert on trauma relevant to CAUTI.

2. Are you prepared to identify and prevent the three infections that make up two-thirds of all Healthcare
Associated Infections? American Sentinel University, July 2014. www.americansentinel.edu.
Performance Improvement (PI) Departments and CAUTI teams are highly focused on reducing CAUTI, CLAPSI, and
VAP. You need a working knowledge of these initiatives and how DirectVision fists into their world. Your deliverable
is to demonstrate that DirectVision easily integrates into what they are doing.

Great overview of Medicare Payment Innovation. FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION ON THE MIDDLE ROW: The New Normal
for Fee-for-Service. It describes the Hospital Value Based Purchasing Program, the Hospital Readmissions Reduction
Program, and the Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) Program. Currently, CAUTI comprises 32% of a hospital's HAC
score, so know that program well. All of these programs have incentives and disincentives/penalties. Although you
are concerned about the CATUI component and its associated penalty, their world is larger. They are concerned
about all these programs.
The bottom line: the hospital has limited dollars and resources and they will pick and choose their solutions. Your
deliverable is to convince them that our solution needs to be part of their solution as a matter of urgency.
