A strong set of mental skills is the pre-requisite for
learning intensive and complex tasks such as
reading and writing.
Recall that reading involves more than your
language processing brain (Wernicke's Lobe and
Broca's Area in the mid-brain).
It also needs sustained attention to complete the
reading, working memory to link words, phrases in
the text to what you have learnt before for
understanding before you can answer
comprehension questions.

sustained training produce long-lasting gains in
targeted mental skills.
When trained, mental skills give us the
advantage of learning better, easier and faster.
It is akin to training in skill-based mental tasks
such as calculation, writing, playing sports or

to play chess for example), you need training to
refine them (for example, writing and reading
skills)
