  organisation
• Mintzberg model – developed in 1980s
• Response to the concern that organisational
  design was too random
• Rather, design should reflect the business
  context
Mintzberg Model
• Comprises five basic parts:
   –   Strategic apex
   –   Operating core
   –   Middle line
   –   Technostructure
   –   Support staff
• And five configurations:
   –   Simple structure
   –   Professional bureaucracy
   –   Machine bureaucracy
   –   Divisionalised form
   –   Adhocracy
McKinsey 7s Model – Background
• Developed by Tom Peters, Julien Philips, Bob
  Waterman whilst at McKinsey (Global
  consulting firm)
• Response to a number of concerns, including:
  – the inability of strategy to be implemented
    effectively
  – the overemphasis on structural solutions for
    organisational problems
