Classes will include:
Written Examination
Identification
Math, handling, and clinical practicums
Team activity (Topic for 2013: Horse with equine colic)
Written Examination: 100 points; 25 questions. Multiple choice
Topics may include:
Behavior
Disease (causes & sources,
signs & symptoms)
Medical terminology
Medical records
Anatomy/physiology
Regulations (federal OSHA,
MSDS)
Patient management
Facility management
Genetics
Identification: 100 points
Equipment – 50 pts (actual equipment and/or photos) + general knowledge
about use
Parasites – 30 pts (Photos)
Breeds – 20 pts (Photos of small and large animal breeds)
Practicums: 300 points
Math – Will be included during time allotted for written exam. May include
conversions, dose calculations, dilutions, cost calculations and invoices
Handling & restraining practicum – Two handling/restraint activities to
complete. Participants should talk through handling & restraining steps
to judges they are being scored.
2. Clinical procedure practicum – Two clinical procedures activities to complete.
Participants are expected to talk through the clinical procedure steps
as they are being scored.
Team Activity: 600 points
Teams will conduct research using local veterinarians & veterinary
resources based on the annual topic (2013: Horse with Equine Colic). In a
15-minute recorded presentation, teams will demonstrate the different
roles of the veterinary team, as well as explain steps and procedures for the
veterinary process to the judges. No questions at the state level. Teams
need to determine what roles are most important to demonstrate based on
annual topic. Veterinary team roles may include, but are not limited to:

Veterinary assistant
Receptionist
o Farm manager
o Owner/client
o Kennel/stable assistant
Realia or props may be used in the recorded presentation. This should be
approached from as realistic a viewpoint as possible.
The presentation can be creative in nature, and may not utilize PowerPoint or
other multimedia software in the team activity.
