Process used to separate DNA fragments
Can separate DNA molecules from hundreds
of nucleotides

3. Step One
Load gel with samples
of your substance
which is colored with
blue loading dye.

4. Step Two
An electric field is
generated to
separate charged
molecules that
suspended in a gel
support.

5. Step Three
The Molecules
will separate
out by Charge
Positive molecules
will move towards
the cathode
Negative
molecules will
move towards the
anode

6. Step Four
Molecules will also separate out by
size
Larger molecules will not go very far
Smaller molecules will travel a
greater distance

7. Step Five
The results can now be recorded by
taking a picture when the gel is
glowing under an ultraviolet light
