5. WHY PROJECT IS REQUIRED ?
• Gujarat is a water scarce state, with 6.39% of geographical area, 5% of
population & only 2% of water resources.
• The excessive pumping of groundwater resulted in intrusion of saline water
up to 10 km of entire coastal belt of Saurashtra.

6. CON….
• In Saurashtra region, only 15 lakh agricultural land will cover under
irrigation (including Sardar Sarovar Project), against 42 lakh ha
agricultural land. Hence, 27 lakh agricultural land will remain rain fed.
• The western and south-western parts of Gujarat always remain
uncertain for water availability for general purpose and for irrigation in
the area.

of Rs. 53,000 crore (base year 1998) in which the tidal power component
was Rs.33000 crore.

approximate Rs.1,40,000 crore, in which the tidal power component is
Rs.86,000 crore.
