What are you hoping to get out of your Student Volunteer Council experience? What are your
expectations of yourselves, your fellow committee members, and your advisors?

SVC 101
What is expected of me as an SVC member in the 2011-2012 academic year? We will discuss mission,
purpose, program components, and the structure of SVC. We will also go over SVC standards, which
includes time commitment; acting as a representative of Rutgers University; and punctuality,
attendance, and discipline.

More than Just Event Planners
Student Volunteer Council members are more than just event planners. Members of SVC are
responsible for planning a service experience for Rutgers students that goes beyond simply
volunteering. We will explore the importance of planning a community service event in this activity.

Community Partners Interviews
You will have the opportunity to visit one community partner in the New Brunswick, Piscataway, and
surrounding communities. Each group will be provided with question prompts and a Flip video camera
to record the interview. Interviews will be played back at training along with a brief discussion at your
experiences.

Moving from “I” to “We”
2. In this case study discussion and activity, you will learn about what it means to move from “I” to “We”
through service work. Reflect on your background and what you bring to the table in this fun
opportunity to share with each other.

Event Planning Project Time

Service Project
Group 1 (half of SVC) will participate in a service project, complete with a guided reflection led by SVC
Directors.
Thursday, August 25, 2011 – Student Life Training – RSC Atrium
8:00am-5:00pm
SVC members will learn about the department of Student Life and its core values in these all-day
workshops, along with a welcome from the Rutgers President and Vice President of Student Affairs.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
5:00pm-7:00pm
Service Project
Group 2 (half of SVC) will participate in a service project, complete with a guided reflection led by SVC
Directors.

Reflection Training
Karen Ardizzone, Associate Director of Community Service Initiatives, will lead us in a reflection
workshop to help better the experience of all Rutgers student volunteers.

Service Leadership Panel
A group of nonprofit professionals will share their experiences about making a lifelong commitment to
service.

Breakout Skills Session
Students will have the opportunity to break out into smaller groups to work on various tasks related to
their service area.
