1. GCE Philosophy Grading System
The AS qualification will be graded on Unit 1: PHIL1 Unit 2: PHIL2 Unit 3: PHIL3 Unit 4: PHIL4
a five point scale (A, B, C, D, E) and (Maximum uniform mark=100) (Maximum uniform mark=100) (Maximum uniform mark=120) (Maximum uniform mark=80)
the A Level qualification will be graded

E). Candidates who fail to reach the 80-100 A 80-100 A 96-120 A 64-80 A
minimum standard for a grade E will
be recorded as U (Ungraded) and will 70-79 B 70-79 B 84-95 B 56-63 B
not receive a qualification certificate.
Grade A* is reported only for the
60-69 C 60-69 C 72-83 C 48-55 C
overall A Level qualification and not
50-59 D 50-59 D 60-71 D 40-47 D
for individual units.
For each unit, candidates’ results 40-49 E 40-49 E 48-59 E 32-39 E
are reported on a uniform mark scale
(UMS), which is related to grades as 0-39 U 0-39 U 0-47 U 0-31 U
shown in these tables.
In each unit, a candidate’s uniform AS qualification A Level qualification
mark is calculated from his/her raw (Maximum uniform mark=200) (Maximum uniform mark=400)
mark by using the grade boundaries
set by the awarding committee. For Uniform mark range Grade Uniform mark range Grade
example, a candidate who achieved
the minimum raw mark required for 160-200 A 320-400 A
grade B on PHIL1 receives a uniform
mark of 70. 140-159 B 280-319 B
A candidate’s total uniform mark for the 120-139 C 240-279 C
AS qualification is obtained by adding
together the uniform marks for the two 100-119 D 200-239 D
AS units. A candidate’s total uniform
mark for the A Level qualification 80-99 E 160-199 E
is obtained by adding together the
uniform marks for all four units. If the 0-79 U 0-159 U
candidate has re-taken a unit, the best
uniform mark is used.
Grade A* is awarded to candidates who
have gained at least 320 uniform marks
on the A Level as a whole and a total of
at least 180 uniform marks on the A2
units.
