Think about specific situations in which a miscommunication occurred that you believe was based
on a communication style disconnect of some kind.
Defining Communication Style
Communication style is the way in which we communicate, a pattern of verbal and nonverbal
behaviors that comprises our preferred ways of giving and receiving information in a specific
situation. If the message content is the what and the communicators the who, then communication
style is the how. Communication style includes, for example, how we accomplish the following
tasks:
1. Organize and present information and like it to be organized
2. Encourage and like to be encouraged
3. Agree or disagree with others’ ideas and prefer agreement or lack thereof to be
communicated
4. Build relationships, trust, and intimacy with others
5. Communicate politeness and perceive politeness to be communicated
6. Negotiate and prefer to be negotiated with
7. Establish credibility
8. Approach, manage, and resolve conflict
9. Make decisions and solve problems
10. Interrupt and prefer to be interrupted

Based on our definition and the preceding list, you can see that communication style is broad in
scope, and as such it encompasses many specific patterns we engage in every day. Our belief is that
these patterns are not universally accepted rules of human interaction; instead, communication style
preferences reflect our personal and cultural upbringings. Even simple nonverbal behaviors that we
may consider “natural” are typically learned. People all over the world smile and use eye contact,
but they do so in different ways and for different purposes. Answers to the following questions, all
about communication style, vary by culture as well as by individual and specific context:
How do you show respect to those with whom you are communicating? One person
might look someone directly in the eye to show respect, while another averts eye
contact. One person might speak loudly and clearly as a sign of respect, another
softly.

However, the multicultural society that exists today does not necessarily guarantee that children and adolescents grow up in diverse environments. Many towns, cities, neighborhoods, and schools around the country remain relatively homogenous, whether it be racially, ethnically, religiously, socioeconomically, or all of the above. Children who grow up on Native American reservations, or in ethnic enclaves such as Korea Town or Little Italy, for example, may have little exposure to children of other races and ethnicities. Youths who attend religious schools might be less likely to make friends with children of different faiths. Yet, at the same time, children and adolescents' awareness of and exposure to diversity remains a priority for many parents, caregivers, teachers, and community leaders. Some parents, for example, intentionally move to ethnically diverse neighborhoods and enroll their children in schools with diverse ethnic, racial, and religious make-ups. Teachers often infuse multiculturalism into their lessons or encourage students to study foreign languages. Exposure to concepts related to diversity and to diverse environments is considered, by many, to have significant, inherent value, particularly for young people. In this Discussion, you will consider what specific benefits exposure to diversity can bring to children and adolescents, and given these benefits, what place diversity should play in their lives. What is culture? What is social class? How do culture and social class affect children’s and families’ experiences of schools and educators? How can educators recognize and appreciate the social, cultural, and economic diversity of their students’ families? In this chapter, we describe the varying worldviews that characterize families from diverse cultural, social, and economic groups, and examine the impact of these worldviews on student learning and educators’ interactions with students’ families.
If you recall, in Chapter 1, we asked you to visualize what your classroom of students will look like and how you envision interacting with them and the key adults in their lives. Many times when we ask our students to do this, we notice that they usually envision working with children who look very much like themselves and come from families very much like their own—European American (White), middle-class families who have had at least a high school, if not college, education. Moreover, their ideas about how they expect to structure their interactions with their students and their students’ families reflect the middle-class, monocultural orientation of most schools in which a single, homogeneous dominant culture is depicted in teaching and learning practices, with little attention being given to varying multicultural perspectives (Derman-Sparks, Ramsey, Edwards, & Brunson-Day, 2006; Tutwiler, 2005).
However, as you are learning, there is a strong probability that you will be teaching children who come from far different economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, there is a high probability that school staff with whom you work will be “educentric” in their perspective about family–school relations, viewing family or community involvement in children’s education from a perspective that reflects only the school staff’s values, goals, and priorities rather than the perspectives of the families served by the school (Lawson, 1999). Yet, as you are learning, this perspective can limit the ability of educators to work productively with children’s families.
A variety of different approaches have been taken to understanding the influence of culture and class on children’s learning and family–school interactions. One approach emphasizes learning about the specific histories and traditions of different ethno-linguistic groups and how to change instruction to reflect them. For example, in an effo.

Before attempting any communication, school administrators must study the intended audience for the message. When trying to communicate with a diverse community, it’s imperative that school officials know the various components of the community.Collecting information about the makeup of the community is a major first step toward a communications program. This enables administrators to plan intelligently and reduce guesswork. When gathering information about the community, the following topics should be considered:
• The nature of the power structure and the way decisions are made in the community
• The identification of the media and long-term challenges that need attention
• The expectations of citizens regarding education
• Situations to be avoided based on the history of conflict in the community
• Identification of individuals and groups who are friendly or unfriendly toward education
• Opportunities and ways to effect better cooperative relations with various publics
• The identification of gaps that need to be filled to produce more public understanding of educational policies and programs
• The channels through which public opinion is built in the community
• Changes that are occurring in patterns of community life
• The identification of leaders and those who influence leaders in the community
• A listing of the types of organizations and social agencies in the community
To comprehend all of these factors, the study of the community should be directed at its sociological characteristics, the nature and influence of its power structure, and the way in which people think and feel about education and the programs provided by the district. Since the community is constantly changing, continuing studies are necessary to keep knowledge current.

One of my favorite movies is Devil. Devil takes place in an elevator with 5 people trapped between floors. Unusual things started happening on the elevator every time the lights went out. When the light came back on someone was dead. The police were contacted and detective Bowden took the case. Bowden and a security guard watched and communicated through video camera and speaker. The security guard convented them that this was the work of the devil and to save themselves they needed to see themselves as they are. When down to the last passenger on the elevator the devil reviled itself. The last passenger began to confess to a hit in run that killed a mother and her son which happened to be detective Bowden family.
When thinking of how the setting impacts the movie, I think of my favorite movie- Avengers: Endgame. The setting takes place in different times. Past, present, and future. When all hope is lost in trying to bring everyone back, Scott suggest Time Travel. The avengers have an advantage of gathering all the infinity stones from different times. Particularly, they have an advantage of getting 3 out of the 6 stones which are in New York just different time periods. They succeed with bringing them all back to the present time and bring everyone back. Only for their triumphant day to get ruined by Thanos who attacks with his army.
I can think of many movies that have settings I like a lot but my favorite setting which also was had the story line continuing in it also would be the scene in the movie Radio when the coach ha to tell him he can’t get on the bus to go to the football game with them as he starts to comprehend and get sad as the coach is walking to the bus leaving him there it starts to rain making the already gloomy weather and sad scene more sad because now he is stuck in the rain. They cut to the football field where it is still raining on top of now being dark and radio has the football game on his radio and he takes the field and every play he fails while playing alone in the rain they fail in the game that is actually going on till they lose on his missed field goal.

FEMALE SPEAKER: How do you get a policymaker's attention? It's very simple.
You develop a relationship with that person. Don't wait until you need something.
Develop the relationship early on.

FEMALE SPEAKER: Sometimes it's difficult to get issues on the agenda that are
our issues, that might be an issue that's of interest to a nurse, if it doesn't align
with the interests and the priorities of that elected official. So it's really important
to know what their priorities are, what their health issues are that they're most
interested in. You can usually Google their name. You can get their official bios.
You can read about the committees that they serve on and the issues that matter
to them. And look to see whether or not their agenda matches with yours, or if
there's a way you can leverage your issue into their agenda.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Know exactly what the congressional members have on
their agenda. And you can get them online, through their local office, or through
their congressional office in Washington, DC. Find out what they're interested in.
Find out how you can help them. You need to call them up, or you need to go
visit the office and find out exactly what is being done.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Call up a state senator and say, I am so-and-so. I would
like to meet with you. I'm a registered nurse. And I think I may have something
that you might be interested to talk about.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Do the homework you need to do to get up to speed, not
just on the issue and a potential solution you may be advocating, but also their
background so that you can calibrate your conversation with them in ways that
will resonate for them, that they'll understand and appreciate.
FEMALE SPEAKER: It's often helpful to have what is known as a policy
entrepreneur. That's a big word that simply says, do you have anybody who's on
your side or who's really interested or who can continue to work with your
policymaker when you're out doing your own practice. It could be a retired
legislator. It could be a current legislator, someone who's willing to support a bill
and then could perhaps introduce your bill, because only legislators can
introduce bills. The president cannot, the governor cannot. That's the purview of
the General Assembly or the Congress.
FEMALE SPEAKER: People want to hear from their constituents. Ideally, you are
communicating with the people who represent you. So that's almost always the
first place to start, your elected official, not the one two states over. That might be
appealing, because you know their name from national news. And you certainly

can communicate to them. But the voices that often matter the most, I've found,
are the voices from local communities back home in the district or the state that

Think about specific situations in which a miscommunication occurred that you believe was based
on a communication style disconnect of some kind.
Defining Communication Style
Communication style is the way in which we communicate, a pattern of verbal and nonverbal
behaviors that comprises our preferred ways of giving and receiving information in a specific
situation. If the message content is the what and the communicators the who, then communication
style is the how. Communication style includes, for example, how we accomplish the following
tasks:
1. Organize and present information and like it to be organized
2. Encourage and like to be encouraged
3. Agree or disagree with others’ ideas and prefer agreement or lack thereof to be
communicated
4. Build relationships, trust, and intimacy with others
5. Communicate politeness and perceive politeness to be communicated
6. Negotiate and prefer to be negotiated with
7. Establish credibility
8. Approach, manage, and resolve conflict
9. Make decisions and solve problems
10. Interrupt and prefer to be interrupted

Based on our definition and the preceding list, you can see that communication style is broad in
scope, and as such it encompasses many specific patterns we engage in every day. Our belief is that
these patterns are not universally accepted rules of human interaction; instead, communication style
preferences reflect our personal and cultural upbringings. Even simple nonverbal behaviors that we
may consider “natural” are typically learned. People all over the world smile and use eye contact,
but they do so in different ways and for different purposes. Answers to the following questions, all
about communication style, vary by culture as well as by individual and specific context:
How do you show respect to those with whom you are communicating? One person
might look someone directly in the eye to show respect, while another averts eye
contact. One person might speak loudly and clearly as a sign of respect, another
softly.

However, the multicultural society that exists today does not necessarily guarantee that children and adolescents grow up in diverse environments. Many towns, cities, neighborhoods, and schools around the country remain relatively homogenous, whether it be racially, ethnically, religiously, socioeconomically, or all of the above. Children who grow up on Native American reservations, or in ethnic enclaves such as Korea Town or Little Italy, for example, may have little exposure to children of other races and ethnicities. Youths who attend religious schools might be less likely to make friends with children of different faiths. Yet, at the same time, children and adolescents' awareness of and exposure to diversity remains a priority for many parents, caregivers, teachers, and community leaders. Some parents, for example, intentionally move to ethnically diverse neighborhoods and enroll their children in schools with diverse ethnic, racial, and religious make-ups. Teachers often infuse multiculturalism into their lessons or encourage students to study foreign languages. Exposure to concepts related to diversity and to diverse environments is considered, by many, to have significant, inherent value, particularly for young people. In this Discussion, you will consider what specific benefits exposure to diversity can bring to children and adolescents, and given these benefits, what place diversity should play in their lives. Reflect on the following: •Do you think exposure to diversity benefits children and adolescents in measurable and/or significant ways? If no, why not? If yes, why, and what are these benefits? What is culture? What is social class? How do culture and social class affect children’s and families’ experiences of schools and educators? How can educators recognize and appreciate the social, cultural, and economic diversity of their students’ families? In this chapter, we describe the varying worldviews that characterize families from diverse cultural, social, and economic groups, and examine the impact of these worldviews on student learning and educators’ interactions with students’ families.
If you recall, in Chapter 1, we asked you to visualize what your classroom of students will look like and how you envision interacting with them and the key adults in their lives. Many times when we ask our students to do this, we notice that they usually envision working with children who look very much like themselves and come from families very much like their own—European American (White), middle-class families who have had at least a high school, if not college, education. Moreover, their ideas about how they expect to structure their interactions with their students and their students’ families reflect the middle-class, monocultural orientation of most schools in which a single, homogeneous dominant culture is depicted in teaching and learning practices, with little attention being given to varying multicultural perspectives (Derman-Sparks, Ramsey, Edwards, & Brunson-Day, 2006; Tutwiler, 2005).
However, as you are learning, there is a strong probability that you will be teaching children who come from far different economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, there is a high probability that school staff with whom you work will be “educentric” in their perspective about family–school relations, viewing family or community involvement in children’s education from a perspective that reflects only the school staff’s values, goals, and priorities rather than the perspectives of the families served by the school (Lawson, 1999). Yet, as you are learning, this perspective can limit the ability of educators to work productively with children’s families.
A variety of different approaches have been taken to understanding the influence of culture and class on children’s learning and family–school interactions. One approach emphasizes learning about the specific histories and traditions of different ethno-linguistic groups and how to change instruction to reflect them. For example, in an effo.

Before attempting any communication, school administrators must study the intended audience for the message. When trying to communicate with a diverse community, it’s imperative that school officials know the various components of the community.Collecting information about the makeup of the community is a major first step toward a communications program. This enables administrators to plan intelligently and reduce guesswork. When gathering information about the community, the following topics should be considered:
• The nature of the power structure and the way decisions are made in the community
• The identification of the media and long-term challenges that need attention
• The expectations of citizens regarding education
• Situations to be avoided based on the history of conflict in the community
• Identification of individuals and groups who are friendly or unfriendly toward education
• Opportunities and ways to effect better cooperative relations with various publics
• The identification of gaps that need to be filled to produce more public understanding of educational policies and programs
• The channels through which public opinion is built in the community
• Changes that are occurring in patterns of community life

To comprehend all of these factors, the study of the community should be directed at its sociological characteristics, the nature and influence of its power structure, and the way in which people think and feel about education and the programs provided by the district. One of my favorite movies is Devil. Devil takes place in an elevator with 5 people trapped between floors. Unusual things started happening on the elevator every time the lights went out. When the light came back on someone was dead. The police were contacted and detective Bowden took the case. Bowden and a security guard watched and communicated through video camera and speaker. The security guard convented them that this was the work of the devil and to save themselves they needed to see themselves as they are. When down to the last passenger on the elevator the devil reviled itself. The last passenger began to confess to a hit in run that killed a mother and her son which happened to be detective Bowden family.
When thinking of how the setting impacts the movie, I think of my favorite movie- Avengers: Endgame. The setting takes place in different times. Past, present, and future. When all hope is lost in trying to bring everyone back, Scott suggest Time Travel. The avengers have an advantage of gathering all the infinity stones from different times. Particularly, they have an advantage of getting 3 out of the 6 stones which are in New York just different time periods. They succeed with bringing them all back to the present time and bring everyone back. Only for their triumphant day to get ruined by Thanos who attacks with his army.
I can think of many movies that have settings I like a lot but my favorite setting which also was had the story line continuing in it also would be the scene in the movie Radio when the coach ha to tell him he can’t get on the bus to go to the football game with them as he starts to comprehend and get sad as the coach is walking to the bus leaving him there it starts to rain making the already gloomy weather and sad scene more sad because now he is stuck in the rain. They cut to the football field where it is still raining on top of now being dark and radio has the football game on his radio and he takes the field and every play he fails while playing alone in the rain they fail in the game that is actually going on till they lose on his missed field goal.

FEMALE SPEAKER: How do you get a policymaker's attention? It's very simple.
You develop a relationship with that person. Don't wait until you need something.
Develop the relationship early on.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
FEMALE SPEAKER: Sometimes it's difficult to get issues on the agenda that are
our issues, that might be an issue that's of interest to a nurse, if it doesn't align
with the interests and the priorities of that elected official. So it's really important
to know what their priorities are, what their health issues are that they're most
interested in. You can usually Google their name. You can get their official bios.
You can read about the committees that they serve on and the issues that matter
to them. And look to see whether or not their agenda matches with yours, or if
there's a way you can leverage your issue into their agenda.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Know exactly what the congressional members have on
their agenda. And you can get them online, through their local office, or through
their congressional office in Washington, DC. Find out what they're interested in.
Find out how you can help them. You need to call them up, or you need to go
visit the office and find out exactly what is being done.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Call up a state senator and say, I am so-and-so. I would
like to meet with you. I'm a registered nurse. And I think I may have something
that you might be interested to talk about.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Do the homework you need to do to get up to speed, not
just on the issue and a potential solution you may be advocating, but also their
background so that you can calibrate your conversation with them in ways that
will resonate for them, that they'll understand and appreciate.
FEMALE SPEAKER: It's often helpful to have what is known as a policy
entrepreneur. That's a big word that simply says, do you have anybody who's on
your side or who's really interested or who can continue to work with your
policymaker when you're out doing your own practice. It could be a retired
legislator. It could be a current legislator, someone who's willing to support a bill
and then could perhaps introduce your bill, because only legislators can
introduce bills. The president cannot, the governor cannot. That's the purview of
the General Assembly or the Congress.
FEMALE SPEAKER: People want to hear from their constituents. Ideally, you are
communicating with the people who represent you. So that's almost always the
first place to start, your elected official, not the one two states over. That might be
appealing, because you know their name from national news. And you certainly

With the increase in technological advancements, cyber bullying has been on the rise. The first topic of interest regards the preventive measures of cyber bullying in college. The reason behind this choice of topic for my argumentative essay is that I have fall a victim to the cyber bullying in my first years of college in several occasions . As a victim of cyber bullying, I know just how much the effects of cyber bullying can do to a person. The cases of cyber bullying have increased due to "the prevalence of social media platforms as well as digital forums" (Van Hee et al, 2015).This specifically means that both acquaintances and strangers have access to comments, content, photos and posts that are shared by people. This becomes even more worse if the information shared about an individual is personal or private which is bound to cause embarrassment or humiliation to the victim. The challenges am likely to face during my research is that many people do not admit that cyber bullying exits and that in deed there is a need to curb down the vice.
The second topic that interests me is on the effectiveness of death penalty as a means of punishment for major criminal offences like murder, homicide and forcible. This topic interests me because there has been an increase in violent crime cases in the world. My main interest is to find out if the victims of such crimes get justice through other forms of punishment or entirely require death penalties for the perpetrators. Also, this topic provides information on regarding the effects of death penalty on the crime rates. It provides a ground whether this form.

IT 640 Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric
Project Analysis Plan
Overview: For your final project, you will assume the role of a network consultant for SNHUEnergy Inc., an organization looking to expand its communication
reach. Refer to the Final Project Scenario document for details. You have been tasked with analyzing the current network architecture of the organization and
determining any key changes that should occur as the organization prepares for future growth. You will evaluate traffic patterns to determine critical aspects of
your business and provide basic insight into what should be done to the network from a capability aspect and from a security viewpoint as the organization
prepares for future growth. Ultimately, you will recommend a design for the future network architecture of the organization.
Prompt: Your first milestone for this project will be the creation of a project analysis plan. Your plan will identify the network applications of the current network
including a description of how the current network is designed by explaining how the different layers of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model relate to
each other within the network.

THE LABELING OF CONVICTED FELONS
AND ITS CONSEQUENCES FOR
RECIDIVISM*

Florida law allows judges to withhold adjudication of guilt for individ-
uals who have been found guilty of a felony and are being sentenced to
probation. Such individuals lose no civil rights and may lawfully assert
they had not been convicted of a felony. Labeling theory would predict
that the receipt of a felony label could increase the likelihood of recidi-
vism. Reconviction data for 95,919 men and women who were either
adjudicated or had adjudication withheld show that those formally
labeled are significantly more likely to recidivate in 2 years than those
who are not. Labeling effects are stronger for women, whites, and those
who reach the age of 30 years without a prior conviction. Second-level
indicators of county characteristics (e.g., crime rates or concentrated
disadvantage) have no significant effect on the adjudication/recidivism
relationship.
Traditional labeling theory explains the potential “escalating” conse-
quences of a criminal or delinquent labeling experience in two ways (Lof-
land, 1969; Sherman et al., 1992). The first consequence involves a

transformation of identity,1 and the second emphasizes structural impedi-
ments to conventional life that result from a labeling event.2 Although
labeling events have been variably operationalized to include police con-
tact, arrest, conviction, and imprisonment, it is arguable that felony convic-
tion is the most consequential in relation to the development of structural
impediments. The label of “convicted felon” strips an individual of the
right to vote, serve on juries, own firearms, or hold public office. In many
states, convicted felons are prohibited from obtaining student loans,
employment in state-licensed occupations, or employment with state-
licensed companies. In addition, the label of convicted felon may contrib-
ute to various informal exclusions that can make access to noncriminal
activities more difficult and criminal alternatives more attractive.3
The state of Florida has a law that allows individuals who have been
found guilty of a felony, either by a judge, jury, or plea, to literally avoid
the label of convicted felon. Judges have the option of “withholding adju-
dication” of guilt for convic.

- A distinct health care offering that may be defined very broadly (hospital care) or very narrowly (pediatric hematology) depending on the level of analysis.
Focus Groups
- A facilitated process typically using 10-15 people to surface, develop, evaluate, and reach conclusion about an issue.
