Data should be able to be easily imported into your
EHR. When choosing a new EHR make sure that
they can import your prior EHR’s data straight into
your new EHR. This should be an easy process that
simply requires you to furnish an .xls or .csv file.
Ideally, the new EHR will also allow for the import of
other pertinent patient information like medication
lists, allergy information and lab results so long as
this data is in industry standard C-CDA format.
Finally, your new EHR should allow you to move
your patient data with you should you ever decide
to adopt another EHR. EHR’s that allow you to move
your data will be very clear about this capability - so
be sure to ask!
Are you using an EHR in conjunction with paper pa-
tient records? Ensure that your new EHR offers you
paper conversion services which will allow you to
have your paper patient records imported directly
into your new EHR.
Ensure that your new EHR does not require you to
purchase any servers or back-up solutions. The best
EHRs will offer you a solution that is serverless and
cloud-based; this means that your only “hardware”
investment is a laptop or iPad. Additionally, your
new EHR should provide you with an integrated
cloud-based & HIPAA compliant back-up solution
that will allow you and your staff to save pertinent
files, share files in a HIPAA compliant-fashion with
colleagues and patients, and back-up any key infor-
mation. Finally, make sure that your new EHR does
not charge you for storage of patient records and
other key data on your EHR; some EHR’s offer free
unlimited storage, while others charge you for incre-
mental storage units.

feature that allows doctors and their staff to custom-
ize and use forms that are customized to their work
flow and specialty. Some EHRs will even take the
first step at creating custom forms for your practice;
typically these EHR-created custom forms include
your patient intake forms and other forms that are
a part of your clinical documentation process. Your
new EHR should also provide you with the ability to
create and customize medical forms using an easy-
to-use form creator. Additionally, your EHR should
provide you with access to a template library, which
allows you to customize medical forms created by
other providers in your EHR’s provider community.
Look for an EHR that makes sending prescriptions
electronically to your patient’s favorite pharma-
cy easy. Some EHR’s will take your existing eRX

and use that to accelerate the eRX set-up process.

credentialing process for you in the case that you
don’t have an eRX account setup to ensure that you
