2. WHAT IS BEHIND THE SUCCESS OF THE PHILIPPINES’ BPO INDUSTRY?
A country’s export business is usually based on what the country is plenty of so we have Saudi Arabia and many countries in the Middle East whose main industry is petrol and its by-products. Australia and New Zealand are known for their dairy industry, while some European countries like Italy and France are famous for their wines and perfumes respectively.
The Philippines has traditionally been regarded as an agricultural country. For years, many of its people have depended on the produce of the lands so it exported rice, tobacco, bananas, coconut, and related products to its Asian neighbors and beyond. In fact, the Philippines used to be known as the rice granary of Asia and had been an exporter of rice to its neighboring countries.
However, the progress brought about by the accessibility of quality education and the rapid developments in the various fields of technology slowly changed all these. Its population is now regarded as among the countries with highest rate of literacy in the world. Agriculture has become a minor source of income for most of its inhabitants.
3. Furthermore, the fast growing urban population of the country demands bigger cities that eats up most of the agricultural lands that used to sustain its farming industry. With this change of the country’s demography, the Philippines has shifted direction from agricultural to technical development. Since it has more qualified and well-trained employable people than farm workers, human resources has become among the country’s chief exports rather than its agricultural products. As a result, the Philippines outsourcing business, otherwise known as BPO (Business Process Outsource), has been growing 46% annually since 2006.
This phenomenal growth in this industry can be attributed to the global demand for lower cost of labor and the requirement for quality and skilled worker, both of which are abundant in the Philippines. Although cheap labor could be had from other countries, the Philippines can boast of its many educated employable workers with high proficiency in spoken and written business English, even surpassing the US in this category.
The Philippines, due to its long association with many Western countries like Spain, England, the US, has adopted a unique culture that blends with these countries. This minimizes the problems associated with cultural differences and promotes better working relationship with them.
4. Besides its people, the Philippines is regarded by most foreign countries as a very conducive place to conduct business. Being aware of the huge contribution outsourcing to the Philippines has to its economy, the government has been promulgating laws that safeguard the rights and welfare of its foreign investors, a step usually ignored by other outsource countries.
It is little wonder, therefore, that the Philippines has surpassed other countries with more technically advanced and lower cost of labor in the competitive industry of outsourcing.
