For a school project we had to choose a topic to present with EBP. I choose to research how a healing environment can improve patient outcomes. Below is my power point for implementing the change on my floor.
2. Problem
Hospital
environment/noise impacts the
overall patient experience, healing, perception
of pain and incidence of delirium.
Noisy, confusing hospital rooms can leave
patients feeling worried, sad, helpless and
increase stress and anxiety.
Current environments are bright, with noisy
hallways and frequent interruptions.
3. Vision
A
hospital should be a place where
healthcare workers respect the patient’s
need for choices and options for holistic
and peaceful healing environment.
A calm healing environment will be
implemented for patients.
A holistic approach will include mindbody-spirit care that is implemented by all
hospital staff.
4. Implementation
Educate
staff to create an understanding
about healthy healing environments.
Information given to patients and family
to provide choices and options for quiet
and calm healing.
Being purposeful leads to conscious
decisions and actions by staff.
5. Goals
A
A
quiet environment
Staff maintaining quiet hallways by talking
quietly, stopping beeping machines,
closing doors when safe and providing
background calming music.
calm environment
Clustering cares so to provide rest, dimming
lights, offering choices for cares/schedule
of medications and treatments, provide a
healing presence.
6. A Quiet Environment
Alarms
Call lights
Set alarm limits to appropriate levels for the patient
Address all nuisance alarms immediately
Hourly rounding with active toileting, pain, and room check
Use responder to address calls when they come
Vocera
Avoid hallway conversation
Adjust volume at night
Tabs alarms
Close to the desk as possible
Close doors of alert and safe patients in vicinity
7. A calm environment
What our unit has to offer (upon request) to
improve rest
• Ear plugs
• Eye masks
• Door closed (when safe)
• Blinds closed/Lighting adjusted
• Healing music/ guided imagery/ nature sounds
(Oshibori
• Relaxation rounds
8. Implementation
Staff
will review information and have
input on how to make the hospital floor a
more healing place.
Please submit an email with suggestions
and review comments on the wiki blog.
Report patient satisfaction survey results to
staff in unit updates and huddles to
communicate how the project is going.
9. Consolidate Gains/Produce
More
Expand
project to the remaining floors of
the hospital to enhance a healing
environment on all floors. Compare to the
other hospitals in the system and gather
healing interventions others are
implementing.
Continue to discuss healing environment
ideas in huddles and keep a healing
environment section in the floors weekly
email update.
10. Holistic Healing
“With
the intention of creating caring
cultures and healing environments, holistic
nurses are enhancing the quality of care
to improve both nursing satisfaction and
the patient care experience.” (Andrus,
2013)
