3. INTRODUCTION
[What is the problem]
• Hostel world an online hostel booking platform in a study in 2018 found that women
solo traveler increased by 45% whereas the male solo travelers increased only by
40%. (hostelworld,2018)
• Women are also showing interest in traveling alone, according to the survey of
hostelworld.com in 2019, 75% of women surveyed and have gone to bag packing
• As this data represents international information, our objective is to find out whether
this trend holds good in India as well or not, If not we would find out the gap
[Why is it a problem]
• There is no data in the internet about the percentage of female solo travelers in India
• There are a lot of stereotypes in India regarding women which may act as a barrier
for female solo travelers
4. INTRODUCTION-Contd.
[Why is it an interesting problem]
• The objective is to check whether there is a significant difference between the
male and female solo travelers and what are the reasons for it and how can we
help to change them
• As there is no data available in the internet regarding female solo travellers in
India, this is a researchable problem so as to confirm whether India is following
the same trend of international female solo travelling or not
• Lastly, recommendations would be presented as to how those issues could be
curbed by the hostel/hotel providers
5. LITERATURE REVIEW
• People might solo travel for many reasons escape, self-identity and development,
challenge, connectedness with others, learning, adventure, new life perspectives, and
autonomy (News24, 2020). India is the largest hub to tourism national and international.
It offers a diverse portfolio of niche tourism products – cruises, adventure, medical,
wellness, sports, MICE(meetings incentives, conferences, and exhibition, eco-tourism,
rural and religious tourism (News24,2020)
• Solo travel is growing in popularity and people are preferring to travel solo instead of
traveling with someone because they feel that there are no restrictions on timescale,
destination and route (Finola, 9 reasons why solo travel is great,2019)
• There was a time when most men prefer to travel alone because there was a stereotype
that women can’t travel alone, but now we can see that women are also showing
interest in traveling alone, according to the survey of hostelworld.com in 2019 75% of
women surveyed and have gone to bag packing
6. LITERATURE REVIEW-CONTD
• Every woman has their own reasons to travel alone but one common reason is to come
out of there comfort zone, they now realize the fact that they don’t want to seek
anyone’s permission to get out and accomplish their dreams. Women are feeling
confident and are realizing their strength by deciding to experience the world for
themselves (Johannawhitaker, 2019)
• This is a major reason why searches for the "Solo Women Travel" surge in 2019 went
high. Google searches for ‘solo women travel’ increased by 32% in 2017 and 59%
worldwide in 2018. The search grew to a jaw-dropping 230% increase in 2019 (Solo
traveler data analysis 2019-2020)
• The market is growing so fast as solo traveling is becoming more popular its not just
budget hotels that have come up, there are also businesses that are coming up with
solo trip planners like Intrepid Travel, G Adventures, Contiki, Encounter Travel and many
more (Becker, 2019)
7. GAP
• Hostel world an online hostel booking platform in a study in 2018 found that
women solo traveler increased by 45% whereas the male solo travelers increased
only by 40%. (hostelworld,2018) “Solo travel was once seen as brave and risky for
female travelers, but a shift of attitude has meant that it is now an adventurous,
exciting experience that allows them to feel free with no one else to worry about
or please,” the company told the New York times
• As there is no such data available about female solo travelers in India, we want to
do a research on whether this same international trend is being followed in India
or not, if not then how can we help to change them
8. OBJECTIVES
• The objective is to check whether there is a significant difference
between the male and female solo travelers and what are the reasons
for it and how can we help to change them
9. METHODOLOGY
SURVEY
• A survey will be conducted to understand what factors motivate or act as a barrier for solo
traveling
• It will be conducted within and outside the premises of Shiv Nadar University
PERSONAL INTERVIEWS
• Personal interviews will be taken of those who are willing to travel and have already travelled
to understand the motivations and the barriers
• The interview will be in-depth and unstructured in nature, supported with a discussion guide
• The sample size will be taken from the survey itself and a few of the solo travellers through
social networks
TELEPHONIC INTERVIEWS
• Telephonic interviews will be conducted with the hostel managers to understand the number
of travellers they receive in a year and the ratio of male and female solo travellers
• This will also help us to know the age group of travellers and what they expect from the hostels
