The departed grossed $289 million making it the
most profitable film especially because their
budget was $90 million, the second most
profitable film was the godfather which grossed
$134 million. The least most profitable film on
my list was the city of god which grossed only
$24 million.
4. Main conventions of the openings in
reference to mise en scene.
•
Costumes –
The conventions for costume in American gangster movies are the ‘sophisticated look’ which include tuxedos, smart attire such as smart
shoes, bow ties etc. I feel like they dress like this to show off their wealth because what they do and how they dress is the complete
opposite, it completely contrasts because it is completely conflicting. The villain almost always wears dark colours, I think this is to show the
audience who the villain is exactly.
•
Sound –
The music is usually soft and slow especially when it comes to conversations but as the conversation begins to turn south the tension builds
and so does the music but then it slows down and goes back to that calm pace it was at before.
•
Props –
The most common prop I have come across researching American gangster films is cigars, this is mostly used in a scene that isn't too hectic by
the villain when he is usually having a conversation with someone or sometimes even when the villain is trying to intimidate someone. Also
weapons are commonly used such as guns and knives, this is to portray the violence in the movie.
•
Camera shots/movements
Usually a lot of close ups to show the audience a clear look of the emotions of characters. Also establishing shots and over the shoulder. The
camera movements are usually slow, I have noticed it matches the music a lot of times, it wouldn’t make sense if the music is slow and
smooth and the camera is moving fast so I think they use slow camera movements to match the tone of the music.
•
Editing – I think the editing for gangster movies is just to make it look as realistic as possible and to make sure that they edit it right
enough so that the audience don’t miss any of the action.
