2. From looking at multiple covers of the pop magazine ‘We Love Pop’, I have drawn some conclusions about
the costume worn by males in the pop industry. The overall look of male artists on the front of these pop
magazines is quite casual. For example, on the right Niall from One Direction is wearing a white t-shirt with a
grey hooded jacket. This is supported by the other two issues of the magazine as both boy bands, One
Direction and Union J are dressed in quite casual costume. Mostly featured is plain t-shirts and some buttonup shirts. Another conclusion I have established from these three ‘We Love Pop’ issues is that the male pop
artists’ costume follows main stream fashion trends. For example, on the left, Zayn from One Direction is
wearing a denim jacket, which is a very common fashion item currently. Also, Niall on the right is wearing a
jacket which is very common currently as almost everyone has a jacket of this style. Overall, the male artists
in pop magazines are dressed according to latest fashion trends, but casually. This casual everyday wear look
that most normal boys would be wearing presents the artists to the audience as just ‘normal boys’.
3. In comparison to the male pop artists, the costume worn by women tends to look a lot less casual than the
costume worn by men. In the image on the left, pop-star Rihanna is wearing a tight white dress. The colour
white signals the genre of the magazine as a music magazine celebrating rock would show artists in very
dark and grungy costume. The colour white also reflects how the genre of pop is seen as quite an easylistening and innocent. I have also established that on each front cover of ‘We Love Pop’, the female artists
are wearing very elegant and feminine make-up which reflects the genre of the magazine. Female artists
from other genres such as rock and indie may have make-up that is quite dark or make-up that is more
subtle and natural looking than pop artists. Ariana on the right hand side is wearing a bright pink skirt and
top. This, again, reflects the genre of music of the magazine through the colour. Overall, the female artists
featuring in pop magazines are always very feminine looking, through their elegant make-up, perfect hair
and quite tight dresses.
4. Costume

My
Artist
My artist would most likely wear a top like
the one Cher Lloyd is wearing in this
image. A tight half top is costume that
would emphasise the femininity of the
artist. Conventional costume of female
artists in the pop music industry will
always emphasise how feminine and girly
the artist is. This will appeal to the bubbly,
girly target audience of my magazine.
My artist may also wear a denim jacket
like the one Perrie from Little Mix is
wearing in this image. A denim jacket is
currently a very popular piece of clothing
which would signal the genre of the
magazine. Brightly coloured shorts or
skirts would also highlight the femininity
of the artist which again would signal the
genre of the magazine.
