Reduce Binge Drinking in
Adolescents
Research Plan
Why you chose this topic and the
particular research question?
 To explore whether my assumptions about
teenage drinking were true
 To broaden my understanding of the subject
 As a mother of two teenage daughters 16 and 17
it is of interest to me personally.
 To look at the research already carried out from
various different view points.
 To look for a strategy to improve the drinking
culture in NZ.
Why you chose the specific
research design and methods
 I chose the questionnaire as a means of finding
my participants for the qualitative part of the
project.
 I felt that by using the Appreciative enquiry
method it would shed some light on the strategies
and approaches that are currently working for
families so that these can be explored
Q. What positive parental messages and behaviours reduce binge drinking
in teenagers and encourage moderate drinking behaviour.
 The themes present in this qualitative study
would be interesting to explore.
How the study proposes to
analyse the data.
 Open coding - label and categorize the data.
 Axial coding will be applied to establish links
 Investigator triangulation
investigator triangulation is researcher-participant corroboration, which has
also been referred to as cross-examination.
 Axial coding aims at identifying the core concepts
in the study
Axial Coding
exploring the:
 conditions;
 context; action/interactional strategies;
consequences.
which influence the phenomena and/or social processes
that are being studied.
 Here the focus is on determining more about each
category in terms of:
 the conditions that give rise to it;
 the context in which it is embedded;
 the strategies that people use to manage it or to carry
it out;
 the consequences of those strategies.
The likely implications for
professional/discipline practice of
the research study.
 I feel that a pilot experimental study utilizing the
themes highlighted in this study involving the
families of intermediate aged school children
throughout New Zealand could make positive
inroads towards changing the teen drinking
culture within New Zealand Society.
 Implications are a greater understanding around
the positive aspects of parental behaviours that
have a positive influence on the NZ adolescent
drinking culture.
 To give parents some direction to give them
