As a child of God we are to do good, but what good works does God desire. In this lesson we answer the question. Both slides and audio can be enjoyed at www.cmcoc.org.
Sermon by Brian Birdow
2. Objective of Lesson
1. What are “good works”?
2. What good works does God expect from us?
3. The necessity of good works?
4. The impact of good works?
3. Good works defined
• Acts designed specifically to benefit others, which
are characteristic of God. God requires and enables
His children to do good.
• Let’s notice this theme in Titus.
4. Titus 1
Good work is being an elder/overseer
• 1 Timothy 3:1—It is a trustworthy statement: if any
man aspires to the office of overseer (elder, bishop,
shepherd), it is a fine work (good work) he desires
to do.
• What are your aspirations?
• Are they spiritual or are they carnal?
5. Remember!
• Ephesians 2:10- For we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus for good works, which
God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in
them.
• Titus 3:4-8….turn with me please.
• Note vs 8—engage in good deed or works!
6. Titus 1
Profession and actions must line up!
• Titus 1:16 - They profess to know God, but by their
deed or works they deny HIM, being detestable and
disobedient and worthless of any good deed or
work.
• Remember the parable of the talents (Mt. 25:14f)?
• Matthew 7:21-27….turn with me please
7. Titus 2
• Titus 2:2— Behavior as an older man!
• Ecclesiastes 3:13 - A poor yet wise lad is better
than an old and foolish king who no longer knows
how to receive instruction.
• 2 Timothy 2:2- The things which you have heard
from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust
these to faithful men who will be able to teach
others also.
8. Titus 2
Teach Teach Teach!
• Older women-….vs. 3
• Note vs. 7, 14
• Proverbs 31:10-31…turn with me please
9. Good works a.k.a
• Good fruits. Jas. 3:17.
• Fruits meet for repentance. Mat. 3:8.
• Fruits of righteousness. Phi. 1:11
• Works and labor of love. Hebrews 6:10
10. Good works (fruit)
• James 3:17-But the wisdom from above is first pure, then
peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good
fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy
• 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Instruct those who are rich in this
present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the
uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us
with all things to enjoy.
• Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be
generous and ready to share storing up for themselves the
treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they
may take hold of that which is life indeed.
11. Works and labor of love
• Hebrews 6:9-11- But, beloved, we are convinced of
better things concerning you, and things that accompany
(lit. belong) salvation, though we are speaking in this
way.
• For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the
love which you have shown toward His name, in
having ministered and in still ministering to the saints.
• And we desire that each one of you show the same
diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until
the end,
12. Good works
• Hebrews 10:23-25 and let us consider how to stimulate
one another to love and good deeds not forsaking our own
assembling together, as is the habit of some, but
encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the
day drawing near.
• Revelation 2:2-3 I know your (works) deeds and your toil
and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men,
and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles,
and they are not, and you found them to be false;
• and you have perseverance and have endured for My
name’s sake, and have not grown weary.
13. Good works is our purpose!
• Created in Christ unto. Eph. 2:10.
• Exhorted to put on. Col. 3:12–14.
• Are full of. Acts 9:36.
• Are zealous of. Tit. 2:14.
• Should be furnished unto all. 2 Tim. 3:17.
• Should be rich in. 1 Tim. 6:18
