In this lesson we examine our faith and why it is often times tried. Why does God allow us to God through what we go through? Both audio and slides can be found at www.cmcoc.org

3. Stranger, Sojourner
• The sense of a sojourner or stranger settled in a
particular district only for a time can well be
authenticated in papyri.
• Thayer defines the term tome “one who comes from a
foreign country into a city or land to reside there by the
side of the natives; hence stranger; sojourning in a
strange place, a foreigner
• In the N.T. metaph. In reference to heaven as the
native country, one who sojourns on earth: so of
Christians 1 Peter 1:1. (Phil. 3:20; 1 Pet. 2:11; Hebrews
11:13)
4. Scattered
• Scattered is from diaspora which means a
scattering, a dispersion (Ref. John 7:35; James
1:1).
• Christians are scattered among people who do not
share their citizenship in heaven and the conduct
characteristic of such citizenship. Accordingly, they
are strangers or sojourners among them.
5. Elect
• Elect (Eklektos)—Picked out, chosen
• Elect is applied to these sojourners or strangers.
• In the papyri documents of the time concerning farm
accounts, the term “is applied to baskets “selected”
in other words better quality than the rest.
• We are called through the gospel. 2
Thessalonians 2:13-14
6. Foreknowledge
• Foreknowledge is not the same as
predestination. Men can know in advance
certain things on a finite basis, but being
omniscient God can know infinitely, without
limitation.
• Predestiante or foreordain (proorizo) which means
to decree, mark out, determine, or set in advance.
• To predetermine, decide beforehand (Acts 2:23)
7. Sprinkling of Blood
• When the old covenant was given it was consecrated by
the sprinkling of blood (Exodus 24:38)
• The altar and the covenant and the people were sprinkled
with blood (Exodus 24:6-8)
• Jesus shed His blood to dedicate His covenant and
remove men’s sin upon obedience to the gospel
(Hebrews 9:18-26)
