2. Poverty has been a huge problem faced by the world, one fifth of the worlds
population are living in poverty. Poverty refers to the state of being very
poor and lack the basic necessities for survival.
For instance lack of clean water, proper housing, food, education, are examples
of human basic needs. Poverty is not only having no money.
For those in developing countries ,it is not having the materials and resources to
fulfil their basic needs. A person can be poor when they do not have access to
employment and basic healthcare, education and essentials like food, clothing
and water.
3. The World Bank estimated 2 billion people were living in absolute
poverty in 2008. Of these, about 400 million people in absolute poverty
lived in India and 173 million people in China.
Between 1990 and 2010, about 663 million people moved above the
absolute poverty level. Still, extreme poverty is a global challenge; it is
observed in all parts of the world, including the developed economies
Absolute poverty refers to people surviving on estimated 1 USD per day.
4. History of Poverty
Start of Poverty Crisis : Year 1500 ; when poverty became a global issue.
For most of history, poverty had been mostly accepted as traditional modes of
production that were insufficient to give an entire population a comfortable
standard of living. However, after the industrial revolution, there were enough
yield to feed the population.
Now, Poverty is described differently. Poverty is not meeting human’s basic
needs. Worst of all,it has already affected more than 2 billion people in the
world.
5. 2 Main impact of Poverty
1- Lack of food(Starvation) and Water
Starvation is a severe deficiency in caloric and vitamin intake. It can cause
permanent damage to our organs and our body would eventually fail and die.
A person can survive only three to five days without water. Once the body is
deprived of fluids the cells and organs in the body begin to deteriorate. The
presence of water in the body could mean the difference between life and death
2-Poor living conditions
Poor living condition causes the poor to die as the hygiene of their living
condition are very low, thus causing the poor to be more even more prone
to sickness .
