Although many have heard of Twitter, Yammer, Google Wave, and other social media platforms for communication and collaboration, few have tried or leveraged them in a meaningful way. This talk is meant to help you understand the types and benefits of social media. The talk will give a general overview of some of the more well known services and platforms, personal reflections on how they have been leveraged by the speaker, and possible directions to be taken in the future. This talk is not meant to establish how JCVI should or could use social media as an organization, but rather how an individual scientist or engineer could leverage this new medium to establish a professional network, discover new collaboration or methods, or build a better product through collaboration.
