CHAPTER 1
HISTORY OF POP CULTURE IN THE PHILIPPINES
POP CULTURE FROM ANCIENT TIMES TO TODAY
• It was in the 19th century when the term “popular culture”
was coined. Traditionally, it was associated with poor
education and with the lower classes, which is the
opposite of the “official culture” and higher education of
the upper classes. And with the growth of capitalism and
industrialization, people started spending their money on
entertainment, such as sports and the commercial idea of
pubs.
POP CULTURE ANCIENT TIMES TO TODAY
• The meaning of popular culture began to be connected with those of mass culture,
consumer culture, media culture, image culture, and culture for mass consumption
from the end of World War II, Following major cultural and social changes, which
were brought by mass media innovations.
The abbreviate form “pop” for popular, like in pop music, dates back from the
late 1950s. Although not used in our lexicon back then, modern pop culture (as we
know it) began with the baby boomer generation and “buying power” As boomers
came of age with their disposable incomes – that influence led to the pop culture
revolution.
The term “pop culture” become main stream during the 1980s. Before this, we
used “popular” to describe things such as top song playlist or “pop” as in art or “best” or
“top” selling, as in books.
WHAT MAKES THE FILIPINO DIFFERENT FROM THE
REST OF THE WORLD
• The Philippines is a culture in which East meets West. The Filipino people have a
distinct Asian background, with a strong Western tradition. The modern Filipino
culture developed through influence from Chinese traders, Spanish
consquistadors, and American rulers.
Filipino people tend to be very hospitable, especially to western visitors. Because
of their strong ties to Spanish culture. The family is the basic most important aspect
of Filipino culture. Divorce is prohibited and annulments are rare. The family is the
safety net for individuals, especially older people, during difficult economic times.
Children will often stay with their parents into adulthood, only leaving when they
get married.
• Two traits that many foreign visitors often have a difficult time
understanding are Pakikisama and Utang na Loob.
• In the Philippines, people greet each other with a handshake. A
smile or raised eyebrows can mean “Hello” or “Yes “. Someone can
be summoned with a downward wave of the hand.
• Another thing that separates us from the rest of the world - our
colorful and lively culture that makes us distinctly Filipino.
•Most provinces have their own identifying
folk dances too wherein they showcase the
elegance and beauty of the way we do
things, the way we dress, the way we see
things as shown in different paintings, as we
have been influenced by events that
happened in our history.
WHAT IS CULTURE ?
• The origin of the Latin word cultura is clear. It is a derivative of the verb colo (infinitive
colere), meaning “to tend”, “to cultivate”, and “to till”, among other things (Tucker, 1931).
Another possible object of the verb colo is animus (“Character”). In that case, the expression
would refer to the cultivation of the human character. Consequently, Latin noun cultura can
be associated with education and refinement.
Culture refers to society and its way of life. It is define as a set of value and beliefs, or a cluster
of learned behaviors that we share with others in a particular society, giving us a sense of
belongingness and identity. Bodley (1999) further adds three basics components of culture,
namely: what people think, what they do, and the material products they produce.
In summary, culture deals with the values, ideas ,art entertainments, beliefs, customs, and
social behavior shared by the large segment of society.
POPULAR CULTURE
• Pop Culture, specifically, is a unit of culture ideas, symbols or practices, which we can transmitted from
one mind to another through writing, speech, gesture, rituals or other imitable phenomena. Pop
culture is the totality of ideas, perspective, attitude, memes, image, and other phenomena that are
doomed preferred per a informal consensus within the mainstream of a given culture, especially
Western culture of the early to mid 20th century and the emerging global mainstream of the late 20th
and early 21st century.
• Based on the author of Cultural Theory and Popular Culture named John Storey, popular culture has
different definitions. The quantifiable definition of culture has the problem that much “high culture”,
such as television dramatization of Jane Austen, is also “popular”. Aside from that, “pop culture” is also
define as the culture that is “leftover” when we have decided what high culture is.
The third definition of pop culture associates it with “mass culture” and ideas. This is seen as a
commercial culture, which is mass-produced for mass consumption by mass media. Pop culture can also
be defined otherwise as an authentic culture of the people.
• Folk culture is at the opposite end of one spectrum from
mass culture. Folk culture, on the other hand, is typically
crafted individually, and it is produced and distributed in
on a local level. This can include folk art, folk music, folk
crafts and folklore.
• Hence, popular culture is the culture of the masses which
is heavily , influenced by mass media, this collection of
ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTURE
• Culture is the lifeblood of a vibrant society, expressed in the many
ways we tell our stories, celebrate, remember the past, entertain
ourselves, and imagine the future. Our creative expression helps
define who we are, and help us see the world through the eyes of
others.
• In addition to its intrinsic value, culture provides important social
and economic benefits. With improved learning and health,
increased tolerance, and opportunities to come together with
others, culture enhances our quality of life and increases overall
well-being for both individuals and communities.
INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIAL BENEFITS OF CULTURE
INTRINSIC BENEFITS
Participating in culture can benefit individuals in many different ways, some
of which are deeply personal. Culture is also means of expressing creativity,
forging an individual identity, an d enhancing or preserving a community's
sense of place.
Cultural experiences are opportunities for leisure, entertainment, learning,
and sharing experiences with others. From museums to theaters to dance
studios to public libraries, culture brings people together. These benefits are
intrinsic to culture. They are what attracts us and why we participate.
IMPROVED LEARNING AND VALUABLE SKILLS FOR
THE FUTURE
• In children and youth, participation in culture helps develop thinking skills, builds
self -esteem, and improves resilience, all of which entrance education outcomes.
For example, students from low-income families who take part in arts activities at
school are three times more likely to get a degree than those who do not. Many
jurisdictions make strong linkages between culture and literacy and enhanced
learning outcomes, in both public education and in the development of valuable
workforce skills.
• Cultural heritage broadens opportunities for education and lifelong learning,
including a better understanding of history. Participation in library activities has
been shown to improve literacy and increase cognitive abilities.
BETTER HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
• Participation in culture contributes to healthy populations in several ways.
Creativity and cultural engagement have been shown to improved both mental
and physical health.
• A growing body of research also demonstrates that the arts can improve the
health ad well-being of older adults. Participation in the arts can relieve isolation
and promote identity formation and intercultural understanding.
• The link between past efforts to eradicate indigenous cultures and health issues
in todays indigenous communities is increasingly recognized. Research has shown
that revitalization of indigenous cultures plays a key role in supporting the health,
well-being, and healing of individuals and communities.
VIBRANT COMMUNITIES
• The benefits of culture for individuals can spill over to society as a
whole. Culture helps build social capital, the glue that holds
communities together. By bringing people together, cultural
activities such as festivals, fairs, or classes create social solidarity
and cohesion, fostering social inclusion, community empowerment,
and capacity-building, and enhancing confidence, civic pride, and
tolerance.
• Social networks created through arts initiatives based in the
community resulted in direct economic benefits for the
neighborhood, such as new uses of existing facilities, and new jobs
for local artists.
• Culture helps cities to develop compelling city
narratives and distinctive brands, with unique
selling points for tourist and business investors.
Culturally rich districts also enhance
competitiveness by attracting talent and
businesses. Cultural heritage is also a factor in rural
development, supporting tourism, community
renewal, and farmstead conversation.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF CULTURE
• The culture sector helps support the economy
through direct and indirect job creation. It also
helps spur innovation in other sectors in the form
of productivity advancements, regional
development, community branding, and
increased local tourism.
CONTRIBUTION TO JOB CREATION
• Economic opportunities created by culture have taken on greater
importance as economies transition from the industrial model, and
work based on physical labor, to a new model in which knowledge
and creativity drive productivity and growth.
• Interactive Digital Media (IDM) is poised to be a key driver of growth
and employment in Ontario's cultural industries and the overall
economy as cultural media products such as games and interactive
experiences become more prevalent.
CONTRIBUTION TO TOURISM
• Culture makes a significant contribution to the tourism industry in Ontario,
further supporting job creation and encouraging infrastructure development. The
many festivals and events hosted each year every corner of Ontario, coupled with
the provinces museums, arts galleries, and historic sites, are magnets for cultural
tourists.
• There are significant opportunities to grow cultural tourism through marketing
cultural heritage assets.
• Music tourism offers Canadian artists a means of showcasing their talents and
promoting their work. Local music scenes can help brand communities to attract
tourists from Ontario and around the world.
CULTURAL PLANNING
• Increasingly, municipalities are recognizing the contribution of to sense of place,
quality of life, and community and economic prosperity through a process called
”cultural planning.” Cultural planning is led by local government and involves
broad community engagement to identify and leverage a community’s cultural
resources, strengthen the management of those resources, and integrate
them in all facets of local planning and decision-making. The process is part of a
global trend toward more place-base approaches to planning and development
that take into account four interdependent pillars of community sustainability:
economic prosperity, social equity, environmental responsibility, and cultural
vitality.
• Cultural plans have contributed to downtown, waterfront, and neighborhood
revitalization. They complement economic development and community growth
plans, as well as tourism and population retention strategies, and expand
opportunities for youth. For example, St.Catharine’s 2015 cultural plan strongly
positions culture as a key economic driver, crucial to combatting the loss of
manufacturing jobs. It also positions culture as a source of new business, youth
retention, and a means of revitalizing downtown St.Catharine’s.
• Cultural planning processes have resulted in language plans and policies, place-
name maps, videos of elders stories, and the recording of traditional knowledge,
as will as cultural tourism and economic development opportunities.
