EDUCATION
2005-2011 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) : Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB)
University of California, Santa Barbara
1996-2000 Bachelor of Science (B.S.) : Pharmacological Chemistry
University of California, San Diego
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
2011-Present Postdoctoral Fellow (CIRM), Chemical Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara
Advisor: Professor Patrick Daugherty, Ph.D.
Current Project: Discovery and engineering of peptide inhibitors targeting proteases involved in ovarian
cancer metastasis for use as potential therapeutics and as probes for the detection of cancer stem cells.
2005-2011 Ph.D., MCDB / Neuroscience Research Institute (NRI), University of California, Santa Barbara
Advisor: Professor Stuart Feinstein, Ph.D.
Thesis Topic: Mechanisms of amyloid beta induced neuronal cell death.
- Expanded the lab’s in-vitro knowledge of tau biochemistry into neuronal culture experiments,
resulting in new mechanistic models of amyloid beta mediated tau dysfunction.
2002-2005 Research Associate, Salmedix Inc. (San Diego, California)
Supervisors / Mentors: Dr. Lorenzo Leoni, Ph.D. (cofounder) and Dr. Christina Niemeyer, Ph.D.
Duties: Researched mechanisms of action, combination potential, and tested second-generation analogs
of multiple cancer therapeutics in phase II clinical trials.
- My work with the biology research group directly influenced Bendamustine (Treanda) clinical trails
for B-Cell NHL and helped suggest a mechanism of action divergent from other chemotherapies.
2001-2002 Quality Control Associate I, BD Pharmingen (San Diego, California)
Supervisor: Suzanna Synenki
Duties: Tested antibodies in immunoblotting, ELISA, and flow-cytometry formats for product release.
2000-2001 Research Associate, Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging (UC San Diego)
Advisor: Dr. Dennis Carson, M.D. (Worked with Dr. Malini Sen, Ph.D.)
Research Topic: Mechanisms of wnt / β-catenin signaling in the progression of rheumatoid arthritis.
1999-2000 Undergraduate Researcher, Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging (UC San Diego)
