The primary requirements for OpenStack based clouds (public, private or hybrid) is that they must be massively scalable and highly available. There are a number of interrelated concepts which make the understanding and implementation of HA complex. The potential for not implementing HA correctly would be disastrous. This session was presented at the OpenStack Meetup in Boston Feb 2014. We discussed interrelated concepts as a basis for implementing HA and examples of HA for MySQL, Rabbit MQ and the OpenStack APIs primarily using Keepalived, VRRP and HAProxy which will reinforce the concepts and show how to connect the dots.

This presentation introduces Node.js in a few simple, straightforward steps. First, Node.js is presented as just JavaScript on the browser, then HTTP handling is discussed with core module http and subsequently using Express. Running Oracle JET from Node.js is explained. The implementation of APIs - REST services supporting various [operations on] resources is discussed. The single-thread nature of Node.js is presented, along with the essentials of asynchrous programming, working with callbacks and using the async module. The Node Oracle DB Database driver is introduced and demonstrated. Finally, further steps are suggested. Microservices are independent, encapsulated entities that produce meaningful results and business functionality in tentative collaboration. Events and pub/sub are great for allowing such decoupled interaction. Using Apache Kafka as robust, distributed, real-time, high volume event bus, this session demonstrates how microservices implemented in Java, Node, Python and SQL collaborate unknowingly. The microservices respond to social (media) events - courtesy of IFTTT - and publish results to multiple channels. The event bus operates across cloud services and on premises platforms: both the bus and the microservices can run anywhere.

6. Some Background • Containers started out at Sun in the 90s. • They are an extension of traditional OSlevel isolation primitives, including filesystem ACLs, to control access to shared physical resources. • They have matured with network namespaces and overlay filesystems
