Currently, investments in research and development in Africa are about 0.6% of the global total of R&D investment, significantly lower than other regions. One of the foremost strategies to address this knowledge imbalance would be the packaging of African knowledge products in such a way that they are available and accessible on the internet. There is no doubt that Africans are producing lots of knowledge in their informal conversation as in formal engagements of varying types. This knowledge is being produced daily in villages and urban spaces, by African government officials and businesses, by students and researchers. Traditional healers are also applying indigenous knowledge to offer cures for COVID-19. Thus, the problem from an African perspective is less that of knowledge production and more one of the gathering, packaging and dissemination of the knowledge. This training present practical tools, platforms and strategies to effectively disseminate your research results to various stakeholders. It would help you make your research visible beyond academia and create more impact in society.

Thomas Kaarsted - University Library of Southern Denmark, Anne Kathrine Overgaard - University Library of Southern Denmark, Kirsty Wallis - UCL The role and place of universities in society are shifting and various initiatives seem to bridge the gap between science and citizens. The last couple of years a number of Open Science and Citizen Science Hubs have emerged in Europe including the U.K. But how can this be relevant for my library or institution? What are the successes and pitfalls? And what is the added value? In this breakout session three seasoned Open Science and Citizen Science entrepreneurs engage participants on how to get started.

“Repository” does not capture the dynamic potential of an institutional repository. Much more than a publishing mechanism for campus scholarship and an archive of college history, it is an opportunity to partner with nearly every entity across campus in order to advance the institution’s mission and goals. The institutional repository calls attention to the library’s unique ability to facilitate campus-wide collaboration and fosters community by uniting disparate groups around a common purpose. More specifically, the institutional repository can play an important role in recruiting new students, enhancing current students’ desire to produce high quality work, strengthening institutional engagement among alumni, enriching relationships with the surrounding community, and more. But to come to fruition, these possibilities require strong, collaborative, on-going partnerships between librarians and the rest of campus – partnerships developed by thoughtful, imaginative outreach efforts tailored to the institutional culture. This presentation will consider how the institutional repository can help support the institution’s mission and vision, brainstorm ideas for working with a wide variety of academic and co-curricular departments and offices, explore how to organize and structure outreach efforts in order to foster teamwork and generate buy-in, and discuss the value of highlighting successful ventures as a means to create even more collaborations in the future. At its core, the challenge of managing Human Resources data is an integration challenge: estimates range from 2-3 HR systems in use at a typical SMB, up to a few dozen systems implemented amongst enterprise HR departments, and these systems seldom integrate seamlessly between themselves. Providing a multi-tenant, cloud-native solution to integrate these hundreds of HR-related systems, normalize their disparate data models and then render that consolidated information for stakeholder decision making has been a substantial undertaking, but one significantly eased by leveraging Ballerina. In this session, we’ll cover: The overall software architecture for VHR’s Cloud Data Platform Critical decision points leading to adoption of Ballerina for the CDP Ballerina’s role in multiple evolutionary steps to the current architecture Roadmap for the CDP architecture and plans for Ballerina WSO2’s partnership in bringing continual success for the CD

Dubai, often portrayed as a shimmering oasis in the desert, faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. Despite its reputation for opulence and modernity, the emirate is not immune to the forces of nature. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, testing the resilience of its infrastructure and communities. Among the critical lifelines in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world. This article explores the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing.
