“Are You Using Your Network Effectively?”
Blog Post - Cohesive Marketing November 17, 2014
(re-posted to LinkedIn)
The subject of today’s blog gives a fairly common question but one that everyone should ask themselves on a regular
basis.
The reality is 99% of us, whether we admit it or not, aren’t using our networks to the fullest extent. Sure, we’ll pipe
up when a question comes about of a specific need and say, ‘I have a guy,’ but that’s one of the few times we’ll
actively promote who we have in our back pocket for this task or another.
There’s a reason why we do this, of course - the last thing anyone wants to be perceived as is the boastful “I know
this person” namedropper.
But that shouldn’t be a hindrance to our ability to think two steps ahead as a project is announced and marketing
plans begin to form.
Today’s world of advertising and promotion has one simple message - use every avenue possible to get the word out
about your project or service. Concentrate on the areas your analysis says will best yield results in, of course, but be
open to any and all opportunities.
This is where your network comes in.
If I were, say, to promote a brand new hockey stick, would I purchase ads in industry publications? Sure; but how
about utilizing the NHL’er you have on your virtual Rolodex to see if there’s an opportunity for endorsement or
mention on Twitter? Why not call up the reporter who interviewed you last year to see if they’d be interested in a
local business story? How about offering a couple sticks as a donation to a cause you support (or putting them
directly in the hands of kids)?
The network you have is your most valuable asset when establishing a marketing plan. Don’t overlook those you
know - bring them on board and determine how you can best reach your goal.

“Smashed Window Club issues alert for River Heights residents”
Press Release, March 15, 2016
For Immediate Release
Smashed Window Club issues alert for River Heights residents
March 15, 2016 (Winnipeg) - With a spike in car break-ins across their neighbourhood, the Smashed
Window Club in River Heights is issuing a warning to all community residents to be mindful of their
vehicles.
Starting in mid-February, a noticeable increase in reports and discussion has been seen in the Facebook-
based community group, with levels of activity not seen since Fall 2015. Targeted streets have been in
western areas of the community, including Borebank Street where a number of reports were made
within the last few days.
Most recently, on Monday morning, a Yale home was invaded with a back door kicked in. The
homeowner scared off the intruders when he emerged from an upper floor of the residence, but not
before they stole a mobile phone.
Administrators for the group advise residents to take the following actions:
1. Do not keep any valuables in your car and ensure nothing is visible.
2. Should your car be broken into, regardless of anything being taken, complete a phone or online report
at either 204-986-6222 or http://www.winnipeg.ca/police/coplogic/
3. Share your information with your neighbours and the SWC Facebook group.
Residents are also reminded that any suspicious activity should be reported to authorities, but they
should not take matters into their own hands.
About the Smashed Window Club
Founded in February 2015, the Smashed Window Club has served River Heights residents as an advisory
and data collection organization for reporting and sharing information on car break-ins and other crimes
within the community and liaising with Winnipeg Police Services, media and other communities in
Winnipeg on all reported issues.
The Smashed Window Club is located online at www.facebook.com/groups/smashedwindowclub.
