The American Revolution is almost like the civil war but, it is split in three parts instead of two,
happened in late 1700s. The movie, The Patriot, is a fictional movie that shows us the battles and
life during American Revolution. Some people were forced to fight because their family members
died and some did not fight because they did not wanted to risk their family even though both sides
are die–hearted patriot. Family could make people do anything. The producers of the movie The
Patriot, Dean Devlin, Mark Gordon, and Gary Levinsohn, chose a composite of different colonists,
like Francis Marion, Colonel Daniel Morgan, Elijah Clark, Thomas Sumter, and Andrew Pickens, to
make Benjamin Martin look better and the hero with no fault what–so–ever.

The Movie ' The Patriot ' Essay
The movie "The Patriot" is a great and thrilling film set in the revolutionary war. The film is
directed by Roland Emmerich and primarily stars Mel Gibson. The film addresses heavy themes for
the time and tries to represent the Revolutionary war as closely as possible. The films ideology was
nothing unique however and most movies at the time represented these themes as well.
"The Patriot," is set in 1776 South Carolina to be exact. In the beginning of the film the
Revolutionary war has already begun but only in the North as the South have yet to fully commit
to the war. However, a meeting is called in the South and they agree to join the war and fight
against the british alongside their brothers in the north. In the film, Mel Gibson plays the role of
a man named "Benjamin Martin" who was known as a war hero after participating in the French
and Indian war and winning a battle simply referred to as " Fort Wilderness" in the movie.
Despite being a war hero, Benjamin is hesitant about starting a war with Great Britain as he feels
like war is something that should never happen. Benjamin is also clear in stating that he has no
intention of joining the war because he is a single father and has a family to take care of but as the
movie shows, you can never escape war. The movie truly begins when Benjamin 's eldest son,
Gabriel enlists in the continental army against his father 's will and subsequently returns after being

II. Movie Summary: "The Patriot" takes place during the Revolutionary War. It's 1776 and intense
fighting is going on in the north, while in the south the people are scrambling to recruit anyone who
was willing to fight against the British. The main character, Benjamin Martin, is a veteran of the

Martin's army however overcomes much adversity, and plays a large part in the Continental effort.
They later join up with the main Continental Army, and along with the long awaited arrival of the
French, force Cornwallis and the British to surrender at Yorktown. Benjamin also gets his revenge
by killing Tavington in the battle. This spells victory for the Americans and personal victory for
Benjamin Martin. After the white flag is raised Martin returns to his family to rebuild his house and
his life.
III. As a result of the harsh treatment and strict regulations put on the colonists by the British such
as the Boston Massacre, the Tea Act, Stamp Act, and other taxes, the colonists were ready for a
change. They are tired of being controlled by a government on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean,
and are ready to start fighting for their freedom. The colonists form many rebellious groups such as
the Sons of Liberty, to protest and rebel against the British involvement in their country. They hold
meetings and help carry out acts against the British such as the Boston Tea Party. When the British
don't change their ways it is time for war. The fighting starts at Lexington and Concord in the
spring of 1775 with the first shots being fired. People all over wanted to help in the war effort by
joining the army and forming small militia groups to fight the British. Benjamin Martin's army was

The "Patriot" takes place in South Carolina in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. It is a story
about a widowed father of seven, named Benjamin Martin. Benjamin was involved in the French
and Indian War before marrying and starting a family. He is reluctant to join the conflict as he
remembers too well his own experience in the earlier French and Indian War. After his wife passed
away he does everything to keep his family together and away from war. He is a patriot who wants
no part in a war with Britain.

later when he catches up with his son and they report together, leaving the rest of the children in the

Ben quickly concludes the poorly trained and ill–experienced Colonials cannot hope to beat the
British in set piece battles – shooting at each other in open field, as was the custom of warfare at the
time – because the British are too well trained and well armed. Continental Army Colonel Harry
Burwell having fought alongside Ben in the French and Indian War, asks Martin to organize a
militia designed to keep British General Cornwallis in the south until the French navy arrives with
10,000 soldiers as re–enforcements. French Officer Jean Villeneuve is present to help train the
militia having witnessed his wife and daughters burned alive by the British army while aboard a ship.
The South Carolina militia is called up and adopts guerrilla tactics, using elements of surprise and
attack, to harry the British supply lines.. To combat the militia, Cornwallis who had previously
berated Tavington for his callousness towards civilians and executing surrendering troops,–

The Patriot was a very accurate movie. It has gone to great lengths to have the most accurate
information and to tell the real story, but still make it interesting. The movie itself contains tents,
ammunition boxes, medical kits, campaign furniture, uniforms, weapons, battle formation and more
that were made completely flawless with help from museums and the Smithsonian Institute
(Revolutionary War experts). Also too some amazement, the movie has very accurate weather
details. One of the main things that isn't accurate but was put in the movie to show significance,

He is intelligent in the way he fights and in the way he plans things out. He outsmarts the English
Army by always being one step ahead of them. Martin is also fearless of his death as long as he
protects his family. He blows up supply wagons and ships perfectly. For his bullets he melts little
statues of redcoats into steel balls. He spares no one in this war and will let nothing interfere with
his want to gain his personal freedom.
The deeper emotions in this movie is that Benjamin Martin at first hates the idea of the war but
then ends up in the heart of it. Martin's oldest son Gabriel joins the army even after Martin
disagrees. His son returns all bruised and battered and is followed by the English army, who later
holds Gabriel as a prisoner and kills his second oldest son. After seeing this Martin snaps and goes
after the English group that has captured Gabriel and kills them, getting Gabriel back. In revenge
for the trouble the Redcoats have caused him and his family he goes and leads his own militia and
basically dominates the English army.
The result of all this is a final battle which Martin has a brilliant plan for. He consults with the
Constitutional army and plans the huge battle. Him and his militia lead the Constitutional army
against the Redcoats. They fire and then retreat back down the hill giving

Benjamin Martin's sons, Gabriel. After Gabriel's death, Martin's fears were solidified and vowed
not to fight for anyone's causes. However, he realized that being a true patriot was the only way to

mirror those of characters that were indeed real. Colonel Tavington's character is based on the life
of Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton the subordinate of Lt. General Charles Earl Cornwallis of the British
Army. Benjamin Martin's character was based on Francis Marion (which is also now a famous hotel
in historic downtown Charleston), also known as "Swamp Fox" fought Indians. In the movie Martin
and his men destroyed the Indians, however in the reality Marion and just a few of his men survived.
