1984 Passage Analysis
Quotation Response 1: Academic Response "One very good one of a ship full of refugees being
bombed somewhere in the Mediterranean. Audience much amused by shots of a great huge fat
man trying to swim away from with a helicopter after him" (9). In 1984 the society is so used to
seeing gory videos and movies that they all love watching them, even children. The characters
cheer when children are killed. Their perception of what is right and wrong is very different to
what people in the real world think of as ethical. 2: Personal Response "He readjusted his
spectacles on his nose, sighed, and drew the next batch of work toward him, with the scrap of paper

If I were in Winston's place I would not trust Julie. She just told him that she loved him without
ever talking to him. I am sKeptical of her intentions. If I got that note I would not have tried to set
up a meeting and tell her about how I do not like the government. Winston has told her a lot of
information even though he hardly knows her. 6: Academic Response "War is peace, Freedom is
slavery, Ignorance is strength" (5). The repetition of these phrases throughout the book adds to
the idea of how Big Brother is using these phrases to brainwash people. The phrases are repeated
so much that stick in the reader's head as well as the characters' heads. 7: Academic Response
"First you saw him wallowing along in the water like a porpoise" (9). Similes are used throughout
"1984" to help the reader imagine what is happening. The description of the man looking like a

History and 1984
"War is peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is strength." In George Orwell's 1984, a light is
shining on the concept of a negative utopia, or "dystopia" caused by totalitarianism. Totalitarianism
is, "a form of government in which political authority exercises absolute and centralized control
over all aspects of lifeВ…" and any opposing political and/or cultural expressions are suppressed.
Having lived in a time of totalitarianism regime, Orwell had a firsthand account of its horrific
lengths and negative affects. Within 1984, Orwell derives aspects of the actual government of his
time to create, "The Party", "Big Brother", and the "Thought Police". Using these fictional
recreations of reality, Orwell's 1984...show more content...
Stalin use this concept in the 30's for the same reason as the party; to make the people believe the
government was legitimate. Another aspect of Orwell's prophetic novel is the thought of
technology. During the time that Orwell wrote 1984, the radio was more comment than the
television and computers had not even been considered. Nonetheless, Orwell found a way to include
these things in his story. The tele–screen could be related to the modern TV. Also, in the book, the
control of machinery and sources of information are controlled by computers. Orwell uses
technology in this book to
show that these things that were made to help man, can lead to the corruptness and downfall of
society, much like what is being seen today. Living in a world that continues to make advancements
technologically and politically, a book written more than 50 years ago still warns the world of what
could happen if government becomes too forceful. Because of George Orwell's strong hatred for
totalitarianism and its life dictating qualities, readers can get a taste of the perfect "dystopia".
Though the people of today have been warned and are afraid of an all controlling government, they
continue to allow the concept of 1984 to become more and more real. If people continue to just
watch their governments make decisions and not ask questions, they will fall victim to its power. If
a man not of this time understands the terror of totalitarianism, everyone should

1984 Critical Analysis
10/23/11 1984 critical analysis In the novel 1984 by George Orwell a man named Winston lives
within a dis–utopian society. People within this society keep their emotions non–noticeable because
if they go against what the inner circle is teaching than that person would work manually labor
for the rest of their life. In the story a party known as the inner circle uses a few slogans and
sayings to control everything. The inner circle uses all that they say to brainwash people into
believing what they are saying is true. The inner party 's slogans are "War is peace, Freedom is
Slavery, and Ignorance is strength" By using these phrases one can see that the inner circle can

They use the kids to spy on the parents within the home to make sure they do not go against the
inner party. The inner circle turns their own people on each other so not only they look to catch
each other but they also have no big groups to conspire with. In Comparison of the three slogans
the number one thing they all have in common is they are all false and are all contradictions of
each other; "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is strength." Each slogan has it 's
own purpose and reason to help the inner circle to control everybody to make sure they do not
rise up against the inner party. If someone does go against the inner party the inner party sends
their "task force" in to take that person and to have them do manually labor for the rest of their
life. Which having the Thought Police a.k.a "task force" in the mix of everything adds even more
anxiety and fear into the people of this society. In truth the inner circle uses fear and repeats the
slogans to get people brainwashed into believing everything the inner circle is telling them. The
inner circle uses all of the sayings to manipulate and control everyone to be on their side. The
inner party has these slogans to make sure everyone can 't go against them. The inner party rules
with fear and is kept a secret, and repeats everything to make sure it is brainwashed into believing
everything they are told. In many cases if someone repeats something over and over they would

1984 Analysis
I have begun reading 1984 by George Orwell. The novel is written through the perspective of
Winston Smith. The world he lives in is controlled by the party who force propaganda to the public,
encouraging people to not think for themselves and in fact punishes people for "thought crimes".
Winston among others are watched very closely and are listened in at random. A way they watch
people is through the 'telescreens' that can not be turned off.
The face of the party is Big Brother, he is described as constantly watching over the citizens on
posters, coins, tv's, everything. He is already a symbol when the two minutes hate occurs, when the
enemy of Oceania (the name of where they live), Goldstein is broadcasted on a screen that invokes
fear into the citizens. During the two minutes Winston and his coworkers get angry and scared and
the mob mentality makes them join into vicious screaming and jumping. Winston hates the party
and that's make clear throughout the book but he is very influential as the narrator says,"In a lucid
moment Winston found that he...show more content...
The disturbing thing is that children are raised off of this and betray their parents, Winston's
neighbours kids not so playfully attack him pretending to be thought police and the look in their
eyes scare both Winston and their mother. This is important because it shows that family has no
meaning anymore, there is no loyalty. Big Brother takes the role of family on, he's the one to trust
and he is the best. Winston understand this as he says he does not remember his childhood that well
but understood that there was sacrifice to keep him alive and that it would happen

1984 Analysis Paper 1984, by George Orwell is a novel depicting life within a totalitarian
government, where there is no freedom and they control all features of human life. George Orwell
exposes the ways of this system through the point of view of, Winston Smith, the main character.
Big Brother represents the oppressive figure and the Party. The Party conducts numerous
experimental methods to implement their totalitarian system to its participants, methods such as
manipulation to the language they spoke and the way they thought. The party frightens the citizens
by threatening them with violence and torture and the government controls everything and everyone.
The technology...show more content...
Removing certain words created difficulties for the individuals to express their ideas and thoughts.
Adjustments are continuously being made by the Party to improve their language and suppress the
way of thinking of their citizens. "We're destroying words –––scores of them, hundreds of them,
every day. We're cutting the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition won't contain a
single word that will become obsolete before the year 2050". (Orwell, 51) Syme explains that their
government is not only creating a new language but they are also destroying their culture by doing
this future generations will no longer understand due to phrases no longer existing. In order to stay
in control the government manipulates the language there is very little to no possibility that anyone
will question or overthrow the government because they will be at a loss for words. "Don't you see
that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thought
crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it". (52) Another
significant issue in this book is thought crime, in which the citizens are not allowed to be individuals
and come up with their own ideas but instead must follow those created by the

1984 Memory Analysis
Down Memory Lane In 1984, by George Orwell, the array of memories and dreams of Winston
helps to convey his past and how he is dealing with the dystopian society. Everything Winston
remembers and dreams of has a significant meaning to him and the readers. But, by the end of the
book, Winston is tortured into forgetting everything and relearning everything the Party wants
him too. The memories and dreams that are scattered throughout the novel are a key point to
understanding Winston. As 1984 develops, Orwell depicts how Winston differs from most of the
other people in the dystopian society, in a way that he is able to relive memories from his
childhood. Not only this, but Winston is also able to remember history in its correct version, not
the version changed by the Party. "... at this moment it had been announced that Oceania was not
after all at war with Eurasia. Oceania was at war with Eastasia. Eurasia was an ally. There was, of
course, no admission that any change had taken place" (Orwell 160). This quote shows how
Winston is able to recall that Oceania had been at war with Eurasia, despite what the Party had
said. Along with this, Winston is also able remember the three survivors from the Revolution,
although most people don't remember the Revolution or the survivors. "They were men far older
than himself, relics of the ancient world, almost the last great figures left over from the heroic early
days of the party" (Orwell 67). These quotes show how Winston is able
