1. City on our Knees
By : Toby Mac
By: Jonathan Avendaño
2. If you gotta start somewhere why not here
If you gotta start sometime why not now
If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now
Through the fog there is hope in the distance
From cathedrals to third world missions
Love will fall to the earth like a crashing wave
Tonight’s the night
For the sinners and the saints
Two worlds collide in a beautiful display
It’s all up tonight
When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea
To a city with one king
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
If you gotta start somewhere why not here
If you gotta start sometime why not now
If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now
Through the fog there is hope in the distance
From cathedrals to third world missions
Love will fall to the earth like a crashing wave
3. Tonight’s the night
For the sinners and the saints
Two worlds collide in a beautiful display
It’s all love tonight
When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea
To a city with one king
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh-oh-oh
Tonight could last forever
We are one choice from together
Tonight could last forever
Ooh
Tonight could last forever
We are one choice from together
As family
We’re family
Oh Tonight could last forever
We are one choice from together
You and me
Ya, you and me
Tonight’s the night
For the sinners and the saints
Two worlds collide
In a glorious display
Cuz its all love tonight
When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea
To a city with one king
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh oh oh
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh oh oh
If we gotta start somewhere why not here
If we gotta start sometime why not now
5. A refrain, or chorus, is a repeated line or number of lines in
a poem or song, typically at the end of each verse.
“…Tonight’s the night
For the sinners and the saints
Two worlds collide
In a glorious display
Cuz its all love tonight
When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea
To a city with one king
A city on our knees
A city on our knees…”
This is an example of a refrain because it is repeated many
times in the song.
6. Slant rhyme is when two words almost rhyme
but do not actually rhyme.
“…Through the fog there is hope in the distance
From cathedrals to third world missions…”
This is an example of slant rhyme because
distance and missions don’t rhyme but they
are close.
7. End rhyme is when the last word in the line
rhymes with the last word of the next line.
“…Tonight could last forever
We are one choice from together…”
This is an end rhyme because “forever” and
“together” rhyme.
8. An alliteration is the use of the same letter or
sound at the beginning of the word for many
different words that are either next to each
other or close to each other.
“…If we gotta start sometime I say now…”
This is an example of an alliteration because
the words “start”, “sometime”, and “say” all
have the same letter at the beginning of the
word.
9. Repetition is the use of the same word or group
of words many times in the same song or poem.
“If you gotta start somewhere why not here
If you gotta start sometime why not now
If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now…”
This is an example of repetirion because the
words “If you gotta start” are used repeatedly.
11. A simile is a comparison using “like” or “as”.
“…Love will fall to the earth like a crashing
wave…”
This a simile because it is comparing love to a
wave using the word like.
12. A metaphor is a comparison without using
“like” or “as”.
“…Through the fog there is hope in the
distance…”
This is an example of a metaphor because it is
comparing hope to something that is in the
distance without using “like” or “as.
13. Personification is when you give something
human qualities that it does not have.
“…Two worlds collide in a beautiful display…”
This is an example of personification because
worlds are given the human quality of
colliding.
15. “…Two worlds collide in a beautiful display…”
This is an example of sight imagery because
you can imagine seeing the display.
16. “…If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now…”
This is an example of sound imagery because
you can imagine the singer is declaring, or
saying, something.
17. “…When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea…”
This is an example of touch because you can
imagine stepping across the line or sailing
across the sea.
