• John Wood was born in January 1964, in Hartford,
Connecticut. He was a social entrepreneur who promoted
world literacy
• He founded ‘Room to Read’ in 2001. A non profit organisation
responsible for distributing books across the world to places
where they are needed
• He has a book published in 2006 named “Leaving Microsoft to
Change the World’’ which contains his journeys and storys

• He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado,
and a Master’s degree in business administration from
the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern
University.
• In 1991-1999 John Wood was the executive of Microsoft.
• John left Microsoft to completely commit to helping the poor.
• Leaving Microsoft was published by Harper Collins in
August 2006. It was featured on The Oprah Winfrey
Show in 2007, with "Oprah's Book Drive" for Room to
Read raising over $3 million.
4. History of John Wood
• In 1998, John Wood was trekking in Nepal on holiday from his
life. Visiting a school, he was saddened by its library, a
crumbling building almost devoid of books. He returned a
short time later on a yak with more than 3,000 books. In early
2000, he founded Room to Read.
5. Impacts of John Wood
• What started with a simple email requesting friends donate used
books has grown into Room to Read. He established over 12,500
libraries, donated and published 10 million books, built over 1,500
schools, and supported more than 13,500 girls so they can
graduate. In total, Room to Read has impacted the lives 6 million
children.
• Room to Read has won UNESCO’s 2011 Confucius Prize for
Literacy recognizing excellence and inspiration in the literacy
field.
