Jesus reminded his disciples, in the midst of the storm, do not forget who is your MASTER!
When things calm down, do not forget who is your MASTER! It is Jesus, whom is in the boat with you... do not forget!
5. Mark 4: 35-41
35 That day when evening came, he said to his
disciples, “Let us go over to the other
side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him
along, just as he was, in the boat. There were
also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall
came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so
that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the
stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke
him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if
we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the
waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down
and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so
afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other,
“Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey
him!”
6. Quick contemplation…
Background
Jesus and his disciples have been doing ministry the whole day. He has been preaching
and teaching the crowd by using parables. He started by the lakeside, but later he got
into a boat, moved a little bit out into the lake, sat on it and continued teaching as the
crowd became too large.
7. Quick contemplation…
Moving across the lake
It was evening time when the events of this text occurred. Jesus instructed his disciples
to go over to the other side of the lake from Galilee to the region of the Gerasenes (This
is clarified in Mark 5:1). The disciples obeyed his instructions and took his boat with him
out into the lake.
8. Quick contemplation…
Facing the storm
Jesus was sleeping at the stern (back) on a cushion. He exhibited calmness. The
disciples seemed to have panicked as they woke him up and asked for help. Their
words which went, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” showed that they were afraid
for their lives!
9. Quick contemplation…
Calming the storm
Jesus, with authority, got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be
still!” The outcome was: the wind died down and it was completely calm.
10. Quick contemplation…
Jesus’ Rebuke
He questioned the reason for their fear and their lack of faith in him. Jesus said, “Why
are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
11. Quick contemplation…
Who is HE?
Jesus is divine, the Son of God. That is shown through the miracles that he performed,
including the calming of the storm in this passage;
He is in CONTROL of the lives of the disciples. When you follow Him, you can put your
whole trust in Him, you can rely on Him, you can count on Him to take care of you.
12. How then shall we live?
Who should be our
Master?
Who is our
Master/s?
13. How then shall we live?
WHAT is one thing we can do today to strengthen our faith in knowing and accepting
that Jesus is our MASTER through thick and thin?
Why should He be
our Master?
We have his Word and the
testimony of his people throughout
time testifying to the truth of this
fact, that He is God and He is in
CONTROL.
