2. For my poster I included key parts that are conventional to horror and will represent
the genre clearly. For example the blood splats clearly show that the genre his horror,
also the use of black and white with only the colour red from the blood being visible
connotes fear and links with the genre of the film, attracting the correct target
audience. The framing and choice of shot I used was close up this is a conventional
shot and framing for a horror poster, as the main focal point is the blacked out eye. It’s
typical for the poster to be photographic rather than art or graphical when creating a
horror film poster.
3. The layout of the my poster is conventional to existing products both have the close
up of someone being the main focal point, with either no colors or dull colors apart
from red. The tag line or USP (unique selling point) across the top of the poster in
white writing and billing block at the bottom of the poster is a conventional aspect.
Another convention with poster taglines are play on words for example: ‘Attack Of The
Crab Monsters’ poster tag line is ‘…A tidal Wave of linking with the monsters from the
sea and the metaphorical phrase. I have also stuck to this convention with the tag line
of ‘When you’re always being watched, how can you hide?’ This is play on words due
to the man in the poster not having a visible eye.
4. The typography I created for my poster on Photoshop, is trying to
represent the horror genre and physiological fear of the trailer. The
broken cracked up writing represents the killer’s mental state in the film,
this is conventional for the genre of physiological horrors. The blood
splattered on the white type makes it stand out contrasting to the black
background. When comparing my type to an iconic psychological horror
film they're similar both representing the same meaning.
5. I created my magazine in the style of the iconic magazine ‘Fangoria’, which is a US
magazine containing mainly slasher and gore horror films. However, I feel that the
style of the magazine isn't perfect for the more psychological side of my film. However
the magazine did create was very conventional to a horror magazine, for example the
colors. The main colors on my magazine are red and black both conventional for a
horror magazine as the both connote fear and danger. The type I used was red and has
dripping effect representing the look of blood, this links well with the theme of
‘Fangoria’ being mainly slasher films. The use of yellow writing for information works
well as it contrasts to one another making it stand out and appeal to the audience.
Another convention is the main character or scariest character being the main image
on the magazine, as this will appeal to the target audience. Two shots are very
conventional when showing the archetypal character in horror (monster or killer) a
close up or a long shot from a low angle to show the power and strength of the
person.
6. Overall I feel that my magazine I created is effective and works well, I feel
that a magazine writing about a horror film should stick to the genre of
horror film magazines. As a weekly or monthly release for horror
magazines the target audience will aspect the latest film will be in the
magazine as they will most likely have a subscription. However when
putting a horror film such as mine in a magazine such s empire or total
film I feel it doesn't work as well and the more up market look doesn't
work as well for horror films and will to appeal to the audience as much.
7. I feel the magazine poster and the trailer all work well with each other and supports the genre and the film
throughout all three. By using the same character on the magazine and the poster I feel that it will easily be
recognizable to the audience what film it is. I feel that the poster shows more of the gore side of the film and the
slasher elements. Due to the connotations of the color and black and white also the blood over the face of the
character it represents the body horror that will be in the film. However, I think that the magazine shows more of the
action side of ‘Captured’. From the magazine you wouldn’t think it would be a slasher horror, however it sells the idea
‘Captured’ is a conventional psycho killer in a horror film that will be seen chasing and hunting people down, leading
more towards the action side of the horror film. All three, magazine, poster and trailer are all recognizable to each
other, by using the same typography and character on the poster and magazine the trailer is easily linked alongside all
three products.
