2. LITURGY
• a fixed set of ceremonies, words, etc., that are
used during public worship in a religion.
• Technically speaking, liturgy is a subset of
ritual.
• When ritual is undertaken in order to
participate in a divine act or assist a divine
action, it is liturgy.

3. DEVOTIONAL MUSIC
•is a hymn which accompanies religious
observances and rituals. Traditionally
devotional music has been a part of Christian
music, Hindu music, Sufi music,Buddhist
music, Islamic music and Jewish music.

5. THE MASS
• Mass is one of the names by which the sacrament of the Eucharist is commonly called in
the Catholic Church, Western Rite Orthodox churches and many Old
Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran churches, as well as some Methodist churches. Apart from
"Eucharist" others are the "Lord's Supper", the "Breaking of Bread", the "Eucharistic
assembly (synaxis)", the "memorial of the Lord's Passion and Resurrection", the "Holy
Sacrifice", the "Holy and Divine Liturgy" and "Holy Communion". In these denominations,
the term Mass often refers to the entire church service in general. Some Protestants employ
terms such as Divine Service or service of worship, rather than the word Mass, although other
Protestants, such as Anglicans and Lutherans, use the word. For the celebration of the
Eucharist in Eastern churches, including those in full communion with the Holy See, other
terms such as the Divine Liturgy, the Qurbono Qadishoor Holy Qurbana and the Badarak are
normal.

6. SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH
San Agustin Church is the oldest church in the
Philippines which was completed in 1607. It is located inside
the historic walled city of Intramuros in Manila. This
edifice is the oldest church currently standing in the
Philippines and no other surviving building in the country
has been claimed to pre-date San Agustin Church.

landmark by the Philippine government
in 1976. It was designated by the
UNESCO as a world heritage site in
1993.

9. DEVOTIONAL MUSIC TRADITION
THE PASYON
- Because the Christian religion was such a powerful
force in the Spanish colonial period, its influence
extended outside the confines of the church liturgy and
into the domains of daily life. Some of these were
initiated by the clergy themselves, others might originally
have been church sponsored but later developed away
from church supervision and lost much of their religious
character.

11. MORO-MORO/KOMEDYA
• The earliest known form of organized theatre is
the comedia, or moro-moro, created by Spanish
priests. In 1637 a play was written to dramatize
the recent capture by a Christian Filipino army of
an Islamic stronghold. It was so popular that
other plays were written and staged as folk
dramas in Christianized villages.

12. SENAKULO
• The Senakulo (from the Spanish cenaculo)
is a Lenten play that depicts events from the
Old and New Testaments related to the life,
sufferings, and death of Christ.
The senakulo is traditionally performed on
a proscenium-type stage with painted cloth
or paper backdrops that are called telon.

13. • Salubong is an Easter Sunday pre-dawn ritual that reenacts
the Risen Christ's meeting with His mother. It is performed
in the churchyard under a specially prepared arch where the
veiled image of the Virgin Mary has been placed. A child
dressed as an angel is lowered by ropes from a high platform
to lift the mourning veil of the grieving Mother. The church
bells are rung, and there is a procession of the images of
Christ and his mother that ends up inside the church.
• The participants in the procession are segregated by gender.
The men and boys follow the image of Jesus Christ, while
women and girls follow the image of Mary. The procession
ends with the two groups meeting in the church, where Mass
is said.
SALUBONG

14. FLORES DE MAYO AND SANTA CRUZAN
• Flores de Mayo (Spanish for "flowers of May")
is a festival held in the Philippines in the month
of May. It is one of the May devotions to the
Blessed Virgin Mary and lasts for the entire
month. The Santacruzan (Spanish for "sacred
cross") is the ritual pageant held on the last day
of Flores de Mayo.
