1. Install the seal on plug (89) . Install plug (89) . Tighten plug (89) to a torque of 105 ± 10
N·m (75 ± 10 lb ft).
Note: The gap in retaining ring (87) must be over the weep hole that is marked.
2. Use Tooling (F) in order to install retaining ring (87) .

Note: Lubricate the sealing lip of seal (88) with clean hydraulic oil.
3. Use Tooling (B) in order to install seal (88) .

Note: Lubricate the sealing lip of seal (86) with clean hydraulic oil.
4. Use Tooling (B) in order to install seal (86) .
5. Install bearing cup (85) .
Note: If necessary, lower the temperature of bearing cup (85) .
6. Use Tooling (B) in order to seat bearing cup (85) .

7. Use a suitable press and Tooling (G) in order to install shaft (83) into bearing cone (84) .
8. Install Tooling (L) over the splined end of shaft assembly (83) .
9. Install shaft assembly (83) .

Note: If necessary, lower the temperature of bearing cup (66) .
10. Use Tooling (B) in order to seat bearing cup (66) .
11. The following Steps are necessary to determine the correct bearing end play:

a. Place bearing cone (68) on shaft assembly (83) , as shown.
Note: Head assembly (56) must be installed to the position that was marked in the
disassembly procedure.
b. Use four bolts (55) in order to install head assembly (56) . The torque for bolts (55) is
165 ± 30 N·m (120 ± 20 lb ft).
c. Remove Tooling (L) .

d. Use a 5/16x2.5 bolt in order to install Tooling (K) on shaft (83) , as shown.
e. Place Tooling (J) on the pump, as shown. Shaft assembly (83) must be seated. Set
Tooling (J) to zero. Use a pry bar to pull up on Tooling (K) and record the reading on
Tooling (J) . Add 0.000 mm (0.0000 inch) to 0.050 mm (0.0020 inch) to this reading.
f. Remove Tooling (J) and (K) .

g. Remove bolts (55) and head assembly (56) .
h. Remove bearing cone (68) from shaft assembly (83) .
12. Install bearing races (81) and (82) .

13. Use bolt (79) in order to install carrier (80) .
14. Install swashplate assembly (78) .
Note: Use a small amount of petroleum jelly to hold three pins (77) in place during
installation.
15. Install pins (77) .

16. Install spring (76) and seat (75) .
Personal injury can result from parts under high spring pressure.
Spring force can cause parts to come off suddenly. Contact your
Caterpillar dealer for disassembly instructions before removing any
parts.
17. Use a suitable press and Tooling (B) in order to compress the spring. Use Tooling (C) in
order to install retaining ring (74) .

18. Install bearing (73) .
Note: Lubricate piston assemblies (71) and plate (72) with clean hydraulic oil.
19. Install plate (72) and piston assemblies (71) .

20. Wrap a piece of nylon string around the pistons of rotating group (70) , as shown.
21. Use the nylon string to hold rotating group (70) together during installation. Remove the
nylon string.
Note: Spacer (69) must be ground to the dimension that was determined in Step 11.e. The
faces of spacer (69) must be parallel within 0.050 mm (0.0020 inch).
22. Install spacer (69) .

Note: Lubricate O-ring seals (67) with Tooling (H) .
Note: Lubricate bearing cone (68) with clean hydraulic oil.
23. Install O-ring seals (67) and bearing cone (68) , as shown.
24. Install pin (65) .

25. Install cylinder (63) and guide (64) .
Note: Lubricate plunger (61) with clean hydraulic oil. Plunger (61) must slide easily in
cylinder (63) .
26. Install spring (62) and plunger (61) .
Note: Lubricate piston (59) with clean hydraulic oil. Piston (59) must slide easily on guide
(64) .
27. Install spacer (60) and piston (59) .

Note: Lubricate O-rings (57) with Tooling (H) . Lubricate port plate (58) with clean
hydraulic oil. Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the back side of port plate (58) to
aid in installation.
28. Install O-ring seals (57) and port plate (58) .
Note: Head assembly (56) must be installed to the position that was marked in the
disassembly procedure.
29. Carefully install head assembly (56) . Install four bolts (55) . The torque for bolts (55) is
165 ± 30 N·m (120 ± 20 lb ft).

30. Use bolt (53) in order to install carrier (52) . Install pin (54) .
31. Assemble power compensator valve (34) , as follows:

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.
a. Install stem (45) , piston (44) , retainer (43) , and spring (42) . Install O-ring seal (41)
on plug (40) . Install plug (40) .
b. Install retainer (46) , spring (47) , and O-ring seal (48) . Install plug (50) in adjuster
(49) . Install adjuster (49) and nut (51) .
32. Install O-ring seal (38) and cap (39) .
