Leon County, Florida
Located on Florida’s southwest coast,
Lee County is positioned midway be-
tween Miami and Tampa on Interstate
75 and comprises the Cape Coral-
Fort Myers Metropolitan Area.
Lee County boasts a strong and
growing talent pipeline for a variety
of businesses. The county’s popula-
tion grew by more than 40 percent
between 2000 and 2010 and is
expected to grow at an average of
1.8 percent per year – making it one
of the fastest-growing regions in the
nation.
The University of Florida’s Bureau of
Business and Economic Research
projects a nine percent increase in
Southwest Florida’s 25 to 54 age
group by 2020, compared to four per-
cent across the state of Florida.
Lee County continues to attract major
companies, such as Hertz, Gartner
and Chico’s, and is home to more
than 19,000 small- to medium-sized
businesses.
Lee County has been using Pro-
jectDox since 2007 in their Building
Department, interfacing with their
Tidemark permitting system. Ac-
celerating building permits continues
to spur growth in this thriving Florida
County.
The City of Orlando has recently
completed the fastest implementa-
tion to date of ProjectDox! Using the
ProjectDox Best-in-Class Workflow
for Planning, the City brought the
electronic plan review solution live
in under six weeks.
The City Planning Division inspires
and facilitates the development of a
diverse and sustainable community
to make Orlando more livable for its
citizens, businesses and visitors.
The city plans to implement the Pro-
jectDox Best-in-Class Workflow for
Building as the next phase.
“We encourage
our custom-
ers to consider
using ePlan,” said Mary Gibbs,
Director of Community Develop-
ment. “We are working with first-
time users to assist their transition
to the paperless system.”
The local development
community is excited.
“You spend a lot of
time waiting in the
queue,” said Orlando
architect Eric Morgan, “I think it
means that we’re coming into the
21st century.”
Leon County has
been a ProjectDox
customer for 10
years!
“ePlans helps address
some of the biggest
lags in a paper-based
process – document
delivery, reconciliation
and routing.”
Leon County is home to the Tallahas-
see Metropolitan Area. Tallahassee is
home to two of Florida’s major public
universities, Florida State University
and Florida A&M University and is the
State Capital.
Leon County was one of the first
counties in Florida to go digital with
plan review in their Planning De-
partment in 2006. At the beginning
of 2014, the Leon County Building
Plans Review and Inspections Divi-
sion initiated ProjectDox to allow the
electronic review of all permit applica-
tions and plans for new single family
dwellings, allowing the applicant one
of three different ways to submit per-
mit applications for electronic review
and permitting.
Now used in both the Building and
Planning Departments, ProjectDox
works with the county’s Accela Auto-
mation permitting system to expedite
permit issuance.
2. Driving Development with ProjectDox®
Tallahassee is the largest city in the Northwest Florida
region and home to the Florida State Capitol, Supreme
Court of Florida Governor’s Mansion, and nearly 30
state agency headquarters. The city is also known for its
large number of law firms, lobbying organizations, trade
associations and professional associations, including the
Florida Bar and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. It is
a recognized regional center for scientific research, and
home to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
Tallahassee is also the main center for trade and agri-
culture in the Florida Big Bend and Southwest Georgia
region.
Tallahassee also qualifies as a significant college town
with a student population exceeding 70,000. In 2015,
Tallahassee was awarded the All-American City Award
by the National Civic League for the second time. Talla-
hassee is currently ranked as the 18th best college town
in the nation by Best College Reviews.
The City of Tallahassee’s Growth Management Depart-
ment (GMD), serves to increase entrepreneurship;
advance local businesses, and grow targeted industry
sectors; and attract innovative individuals and compa-
nies to the Capital region.
In its efforts to provide the most efficient and effective
service possible, Tallahassee offers ProjectDox for ac-
cess to city projects and electronic plan submittal and
review. The city has been using ProjectDox to accelerate
land development since 2008, and was the host of the
2014 ProjectDox User Group Conference.
Boca Raton is the southernmost city in Palm Beach County,
with a population of around 90,000. Thec city initially imple-
mented ProjectDox in their Building Department in 2011 and
has since brought the solution to their Planning and Zoning
Division as well.
“This move to bring the Planning and Zoning Division online
is part of a broader effort to increase efficiency, collabora-
tion and document management among city departments,
and to support a green initiative,” said Sherilee Fairweather,
the city’s Business System Analyst who managed the proj-
ect.
According to Jim Bell, Acting Development Services Deputy
Director, “There can be as many as 20 people reviewing
documents, asking for clarification, making changes and
comments. You can imagine how important communication
is, and how one missing or incomplete document, or a delay
by one agency or department can really prolong the review.”
The procedure for electronic plan review and routing will
save customers time and money, while improving the
overall efficiency of the process. The plan review process
includes internal and external agencies. City departments
including municipal services, fire, police and utilities each
review the plans, and outside agencies including, AT & T,
the Lake Worth Drainage District and even the Boca Raton
Airport Authority also review the plans.
For residents, architects, land use attorneys and develop-
ers, the move to ProjectDox, the new electronic plan review
and routing software system, will not only save trips to
City Hall, but will enhance communication with the many
agencies involved in the review process. By uploading all
application documents to the new system, the process can
be electronically managed and monitored, will improve
accountability and provide transparency for all parties
involved.
Tallahassee has been a
ProjectDox customer for
eight years and played
host to the 2014 Project-
Dox User Group Confer-
ence (PDUG).
“From an administrative perspective, it’s
probably one of the best things we’ve
ever done to manage workflow and com-
pliance with regulations. Our ProjectDox
implementation has been a model for oth-
ers in our region.”
“ProjectDox is an
incredible time saver!”
