Customer Queuing Systems
The Customer Queuing Systems

Abstract
In this essay, two companies will be identified and described on how they utilize a queuing system.
Only two of the four most basic waiting line structures will be discussed: single–server and
multiple–server waiting lines. Since waiting is an integral part of many service related operations, it
is an important area of analysis. Each queue system has its advantages and disadvantages, but with
no doubt each company's goal is to cut down on the waiting time and that customer returns. In
particular, we examine their implementation of both processes and try to find solutions to improve
the waiting line process. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The multiple–server waiting line approach eliminates jockeying behavior. A single–line, multiple–
server system has better performance in terms of waiting times than the same system with a line for
each server. The multiple–line configuration is appropriate when experienced servers are used or
when space considerations make a single–line model inconvenient. On the other hand, the multiple–
service line system provides the customer the option of selecting his clerk, but check–out may be
considerably slower (Jones, O'Berski, & Tom, 1980, p. 91). There are many ways to minimize
customer wait times. One way to reduce customer wait time is to decrease the expected service time.
This can be accomplished by identifying best practices among all the servers, standardizing
processes based on best practices, and enhancing training to ensure that best practices are followed.
Also, you may choose to offer employee incentives that encourage working faster as a way to
decrease service time. Another way to impact customer wait time is to decrease the rate at which
customers arrive to be served. If your service operation experiences peak service hours at certain
times of the day when your customers prefer to be served, then management could offer the
customer promotions geared to increase traffic during off–peak times. Finally, by adding more
servers you will be able to reduce customer wait

To guarantee our result we draw the distribution diagram of service time and number of people in
the queue. The scattered diagram shows that we have different patterns of the distribution in
different queue lines which supports our result. Next to determine if servers give service with the
same distribution, we use Kruskal Wallis test again, we choose three different servers and do the test
again. Kruskal–Wallis Test: service times versus server Kruskal–Wallis Test on service times server

A Shopper 's Drug Mart Queuing System
The topic of this report is an analysis of a Shopper's Drug Mart queuing system. At Shoppers Drug
Mart, there are multiple places where queues are formed; regular check–out line, beauty check–out
line, at the pharmacy and at the post office. For this analysis, we only looked at the two different
check–out lines, the set of regular servers near the front of the store and also the check–out line for
the beauty department. At this location, we noticed there were only two cashiers (servers) handling
all the transactions for the regular check–out line at the time we went. There was only one cashier
(server) at the beauty department handling all the transactions done for beauty products. While in
reality anyone with any products can check–out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How the data was collected was using a stopwatch at 00:00 (zero minutes and zero seconds). The
stopwatch began and we waited for the first customer to arrive. The first customer arrived 00:36 or
36 seconds after the stopwatch began to run, hence that is their inter–arrival time. Customer 1
departed at 1:18 from when the stopwatch ran. By taking the difference between the departure clock
time and arrival clock time, service time was calculated. This was done for all 15 customers. Arrival
times and departure timesare in clock time because we observed their arrivals and departures by
viewing a stopwatch. The final clock time noted is 11:36 (so 11 minutes and 36 seconds from when
the clock first began) and that is the same time the final customer (customer 15) departed.
After observing and collecting data regarding the regular check–out line, many values were
calculated, including; average arrival rate, average service rate, average expected number of
customers in the system, average expected number of customers in a queue, average expected
number of customers in service, average expected time a customer spends in the system, average
expected time a customer spends waiting in the queue and the average expected time a customer
spends being serviced. Because the regular check–out line had 2 servers, the queuing model utilized
was M/M/2/GD/∞/∞.

Avoid Ice Damns Research Paper
Are you noticing water spots throughout the ceilings of your commercial property? If so, you have a
moisture problem in your attic or directly under the roof, and your roof may not be ventilated
properly. There are a lot of concerns that may arise because you have poor ventilation that can
damage the roof and put the people that work for you at risk. Here are a few reasons a commercial
roofing professional needs to do an inspection in the space. Avoid Ice Damns Ice dams occur when
there is hot air from the building hitting the roof, causing snow to melt. Once the snow melts but
then the air causes it to freeze, you end up with ice on your roof. This prevents snow and rain from
running off the roof properly, and can cause damage to the shingles

Waiting Lines and Queuing Models Essay
Waiting Lines & Queuing Models American Military University Business 312 For my project on
other operations research techniques I have decided to research waiting lines and queuing models.
My interest in this application stems from my personal dislike for standing in lines and waiting on
hold while on the phone. This is virtually my only pet peeve; nothing aggravates me faster than
standing in a line or waiting on hold. Like most people I go out of my way to avoid lines, using
strategies such as arriving early or visiting during non–peak times. However, before investigating
this topic, I had no idea there was a specific science behind the madness. Queuing models are
important applications for predicting congestion in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(R. Cooper, 1981) My independent research will focus on call centers since I currently workin in
one and because they utilize this application extensively. Call centers are the preferred way for many
companies to communicate with their customers. The call center industry is vast, and rapidly
expanding in terms of both workforce and economic scope. It is estimated that 3% of the U.S. and
U.K. workforce is involved with call centers. In addition the call center industry enjoys a annual
growth rate of 20% and, overall, more than half of the business transactions are conducted over the
phone. (A. Mandelbaum, 2001) In basic models of call centers it is commonly assumed that the only
parameters under the system manager's control are the number of trunks available (K + N) and the
number of agents (N). In most contexts the cost of trunk lines is trivial compared to personnel costs,
so in this paper we focus on staffing decisions (N), assuming that K = ∞ for modelling purposes.
Thus busy signals are absent in the models to be considered. The classical M/M/N queueing model,
also called the Erlang–C model, is obtained by further assuming Poisson arrivals, exponentially
distributed service times and no abandonment. It is the model most often used in call center analysis.

networks are designed using the wireless networks such as WLANs and fiber networks like PONs
(Passive Optical Networks). Therefore FiWi networks having advantages of both users mobility
support as well as high bandwidth. But the major problem with this networks is as the number of
mobile user's increases, queueing delay is increasing in FiWi's Optical Network Unit (ONU). There
are number of methods recently proposed for minimizing this queueing delay for bandwidth
allocation. However, this methods are only working on PONs and WLANs and hence not
considering the state of ONU. Therefore performance of FiWi networks is poor in terms of
throughput and queuing delay. For any kind of FiWi networks improving its performance in terms of
throughput is very vital. This can be possible by presenting the efficient queueing delay
minimization method for FiWi networks. This is main research problem for this domain. 2.

Tennis Balloon Research Paper
Currently, all tennis balls are packaged in cylinders which hold four balls. Although this is an
innovative idea, there is a lot of wasted space in the cylinders and in the square box that it is
packaged in. In this investigation, another idea for a container will be shown with a list of
advantages and disadvantages. The aim is to create a new container for tennis balls that has a
comparable surface area and wasted space to that of the cylinder containers currently used. Another
container that could be used instead of a cylinder is a rectangular prism as shown below. This
investigation will use measurement to calculate the surface area and volume of 3D objects,
including a sphere and cylinder.

This assumption was proven to be incorrect as the wasted space was calculated to be much over
4000cm3. Another assumption made was that the square box with rectangular prisms inside would
have a considerably smaller amount of wasted space compared to the cylinder, but a small amount
of wasted space would exist. As shown in the previous working out, there was no wasted space in
the square box with the rectangular prisms. A final assumption made in part A was the dimensions of
the cylindrical container. In part B, it was presumed that the points would be scattered loosely
around the line of best fit. After creating the scatter plot, it was understood that the points were
closely scattered around the line of best fit and a realisation that there could be a formula to
calculate the results quicker was brought into consideration. Also, another assumption was that the
amount of wasted space would not be a significant amount. After calculating, it was notable that the
wasted space was more than half of the volume of the

EXPERIMENTATION WITH
THE SIMULATION MODEL
ON A QUEUING PROBLEM
GROUP 7 (TUESDAY 12–13)
STUDENT NUMBER: 1121234
INTRODUCTION
This report is a continuation of the group project which produced and analysed a working simulation
model of the queueing problems at 'University House Restaurant' using Simul8. From the
conceptual modelling of the group project, the model contents, which include the scope and the
level of detail, and constraints, will remain the same as well as the simplifications and assumptions.
Likewise, the validation and verification of the model are assumed to be reasonably accurate.
However, some factors from the original report will be subject to change according to different
scenarios during the experimentation.
From the observations of the restaurant and the interview with a full–time employee, it was evident
that the queueing problem was typical, especially for 'Today's special Hot–food menu' during the
peak hours of Fridays between 12:00–14:00. This queueing problem affected the total time taken to
be fully served, taking up to 7.7 minutes, which the problem was analysed in the group report.
OBJECTIVES OF THE EXPERIMENT
The setting of objectives for this report is to experiment with the simulated model by making
various scenarios, and attempting to find the most efficient ways to make any improvements to
achieve the objectives for the queueing problem at the University House Restaurant.

Essay about Service Marketing
Introduction
In an ideal situation, customers would not have to wait for the delivery of products and services.
However, in the real world, organizations cannot always match exact capability and demand;
therefore, waiting is frequently inevitable while purchasing, especially in service marketing, as
service firms can barely inventory their "stock" for sale at a later date (Lovelock, 1992, p.154). In
general, waiting in lines – known as "queuing", happens when the number of customers arrive at a
facility exceeds the capability of the system to serve them (Lovelock & Wirtz, 2011, p.260).
Basically, this essay will state the relationship between queuing and customer satisfaction, as well as
relationship between customer satisfaction and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the consumer is waiting alone and have nothing to do, especially in an unfamiliar facility, the
feeling of boring, uncertain about waiting time, stress and anxiety will be increasingly enlarged with
time passing. Queuing also seems more burdensome if people feel physically uncomfortable.
Moreover, because of a fear of "been forgotten", the senses of "get started" of customers are fervent.
It is claimed that the anxiety level is much higher while waiting to be served than it is while being
served, even though the latter queuing will be longer (Lovelock & Wirtz, 2011, p.267; Maister,
1985).
Unpleasant waiting experience might accompany with customers go through the whole service
process, which could lower the overall evaluation of service quality easily. Not only the queuing
experience, a number of studies also investigated that queuing time in a service organization
significantly influences consumer satisfaction. In general, increasing in waiting time is associated
with decreasing in customer satisfaction (Katz, M.Larson & C.Larson, 1991). The graph (Dube,
Renaghan & Miller, 1994) below shows the effect of waiting time on customer satisfaction in
restaurant industry, and suggests that most consumers do not satisfied if the waiting time is longer
than 8 minutes. In addition, another study (Jones & Dent, 1994) examined that 70% of respondents
considered waiting time as a major

Educational Facilities For New Building Code Regulations
Educational facilities designed and built between 1950 and 1970 have come to a point in their
building's life cycle that it is time for them to retire. These schools are no longer viable to keep
running because of the financial strain to upgrade to new building code regulations. This means a
flux of education construction is upon us. This also means that these schools, unless they are private,
will be given a bond issue awarded by the state. Traditionally, schools are one of the tightest budgets
to work with because they need to get the most for their money.
One mindset that will save the owner money in the long term is thinking about life cycle cost and
maintenance. One of the biggest issues with any new construction is the maintenance cost of
running the building years after completion. Now this could mean many things from the HVAC to
the paint on the walls. In schools, the interior finishes are not changed very often; therefore, need
special attention. Today interior finishes are being selected more carefully in order to save money on
maintenance cost, longevity, and durability.
A big maintenance cost to schools is the flooring. Traditionally, schools have chosen vinyl
composition tile, or VCT, for the majority of the flooring. When the schools were built sixty years
ago this was the best option for longevity. Today that is not the case. In fact VCT flooring is no
longer financially or ecologically efficient for the progressive future of educational facilities.

Initial Analysis
Application of Little's Law:
The data for the first 50 days indicated that: No. of Jobs arrived till date = 153. No. of Completed
Jobs = 152
Since there were no jobs in the order queue, the inventory of the system, taken as a whole, was 1 i.e.
60 kits in total. This number included the kits waiting in the machine queues and jobs that are
currently being processed on the machines.
The average arrival rate of the jobs per day was 3.06. This was taken as the initial throughput for the
system. Applying Little's law, Flow time=InventoryThroughput
∴Flow time=0.3267 hrs.
This value matched with the average lead time of 0.39 hrs.

* Order Machine 2: Machine 2 became the new bottleneck and so one unit was purchased. * Batch

and the run times of different machines and so we decided to look at the pattern after altering the
batch size.
Days 52 – 58: * Order Machine 3: Machine 3 became the new bottleneck and so one unit was

Backpressure Based Adaptive Routing and Scheduling In...
Under high traffic conditions, this works very well, and backpressure is able to fully utilize the
available network resources in a highly dynamic fashion. Under low traffic conditions, however,
because many other nodes may also have a small or 0 queue size, there is inefficiency in terms of an
increase in delay, as packets may loop or take a long time to make their way to the destination. This
is particularly of concern in intermittent encounter–based mobile networks which are already delay–
limited due to the sparse and highly dynamic network connectivity. Such networks have proposed
the use of redundant transmissions to improve delay, which do not work well when the traffic load is
high.
Routing protocol, such as Spray and Wait, that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The additional transmissions incurred by BWAR due to the duplicates utilize available slots which
would otherwise go idle, in order to reduce the delay. Particularly for networks that are not energy–
limited, this offers a more efficient way to utilize the available bandwidth during low load
conditions. In order to minimize the storage resource utilization of duplicate packets, ideally, these
duplicate packets should be removed from the network whenever a copy is delivered to the
destination. Since this may be difficult to implement (except in some kinds of networks with a
separate control plane), we also propose and evaluate a practical timeout mechanism for automatic
duplicate removal. Under high load conditions, because queues are rarely empty, duplicates are
rarely created, and BWAR effectively reverts to traditional backpressure and inherits its throughput
optimality property. By design, BWAR is highly robust and distributed and does not require prior
knowledge of locations, mobility patterns, and load conditions.
The duplicate queues are maintained and utilized as follows:
Original packets when transmitted are removed from the main queue; however, if the queue size is
lower than a certain threshold qth, then the transmitted packet is duplicated and kept in the duplicate
buffer associated with its destination if it is not full (otherwise no duplicate is created).
Duplicate packets are not removed from the duplicate buffer when transmitted. They

contact of air, waste & bio mass, provide thousands of crossover points per m3, thus leading to a
very good aeration by natural draught or ventilation. The air requirement is met by providing
Ventilation openings in the wall, at the bottom of the Improved Bio–Tower, having a size of 4–6%

Fitness Plus
Students should begin by analyzing the capacity of the facility; however, the analysis is not as
straightforward as it first may seem. There is an issue of how capacity should be measured. Students
should quickly recognize that an overall measure of capacity for the facility isn't much help in
determining if Fitness Plus is capacity constrained. If the service delivery process for each member
were homogeneous, such as a cafeteria or airline flight, then an overall measure of capacity, such as
the number of members serviced over a given period of time, would be an appropriate measure of
capacity. However, the service delivery process at Fitness Plus is a menu–driven process where each
member chooses from a range of services the club ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With these issues in mind, the students can develop capacity estimates similar to the following:
1. Aerobics
* Assumption: Aerobics classes begin on the hour and last for 50 minutes.
* Capacity: 1 class per hour for 35 members
2. Cardiovascular
* Assumption: During peak demand times, each piece of equipment is limited to 30 minutes per
member.
* Capacity: With 29 pieces of C–V equipment, 58 members per hour peak capacity
3. Nautilus
* Assumptions: Each member takes 1 minute to complete each exercise. The machines are set up so
members flow through in a sequential manner.
* Capacity: Maximum capacity at a steady state; cycle time 1 minute. 60 members per hour
Over the three–hour peak demand period, the Nautilus area may only process 156 members because
it will take 24 minutes for the first member to complete the entire 24–machine cycle.
These three areas of the club are the major areas of concern due to customer complaints, and they
are where students should concentrate their analysis. The tennis and racquetball areas can service the
following number of members per hour:
Tennis: 12 members/hour for singles 24 members/hour for doubles
Racquetball: 16 members/hour for singles 32 members/hour for doubles
There were no details given in the case to determine the capacity of the free–weight area. So, if we
aggregate the individual capacities into an overall measure, the club can accommodate a peak
capacity of 181 to 209

Sealcoat Case Study
4 Problems That Can Happen With An Asphalt Sealcoat For A Parking Lot The first impression you
make on your customers is when they pull up to your business and park in your parking lot. You
want to make sure that the parking lot appears to be well maintained, and one way you can do that is
by applying a sealcoat to the asphalt. The thin layer of sealant is designed to protect the asphalt and
extend its life, but it does not come without its own set of problems. An asphalt sealcoat can have
any of these 4 problems that you will need to address. Tiny Cracks and Spider Lines A sign that your
asphalt sealcoat is wearing thin is when you start noticing small hairline cracks on the surface. This
happens naturally over time due to the asphalt sealant breaking down. You may notice it more in the
actual parking spots, because leaking fluids from cars can speed up the deterioration ... Show more

Apply a new sealant at the early stages of cracking. Chipping It is common to see chipping if you
are located in a dry climate, and it will be more noticeable around edges of the parking lot that are
prone to becoming damaged. A little bit of chipping is normal, but major chipping is a red flag that
you need to reseal your parking lot. Chipping can occur due to the original sealant being installed
improperly, usually because the sealant did not have a high amount of adhesive content to perform
an optimal seal. This can easily happen if you try doing the job yourself and make a mistake in the
application process. Sticky Surfaces Since asphalt sealers use tar, you may notice that surface of
your parking lot is sticky when the temperature outside is very hot. You should be concerned if you
have a long length of extremely high temperatures, because the sealcoat can breakdown faster than
normal. It may require resealing earlier than you intended.

Social Identity Theory and its Impact on People’s...
Abstract
This study aimed to investigate whether the social identity theory applies when it comes to peoples'
reactions to petrol queue jumping. It intended to ascertain whether participants demonstrated more
reaction to those who jump queues, outside their own in–group (those who drive luxurious cars as
opposed to non–luxurious car drivers). This study was influenced by a similar experiment conducted
by Helweg–Larsen & LoMonaco (2008) about queuing among U2 fans and their reactions to queue
jumping. The experiment involved 49 participants who indicated they didn't drive a luxury car, in a
Melbourne metropolitan petrol queue, 26 of whom were males, aged 18–58 years (M =33:82; SD =

This study is relatable to other research particularly one executed by Thoitis & Virshup (1997) in
which groups of people were classified into "me's and "we's" and this is a clear representation for
in–groups and out–groups. They discussed the notion that there is a sense of obligation and
protection of one's own ingroup as they are willing to empathise with those perceived to be similar
to the individual as oppose to the "we's" who were seen as dissimilar to the individual (Thoitis &
Virshup, 1997). In terms of human behaviour, social identity theory and queue jumping can be
closely interrelated as queue jumping has been was investigated by Helweg–Larsen & LoMonaco
(2008). In this study U2 fans where given a questionnaire whilst waiting in an overnight line to
obtain floor spots at his concert the following day. The purpose was to reflect on their reactions to
line–intrusion and the results showed that the queue is a social system and line intrusion was most
upsetting to fans with a greater the commitment; the more dedicated the fan the more upset they
were by queue jumping (Helweg–Larsen & LoMonaco, 2008).
In regards to queue jumping, there is much curiosity as to whether the social identity theory can be
proven but little research. It is important to study reactions to

Defining Culture Essay
Defining Culture
Q1. Explain the difference between surface culture and deep culture. Give examples from your own
culture. Which do you think is more challenging to cope with as a foreigner? Why?
Surface culture is essentially the cultural norms you can easily identify in a foreign country such as
food and dressing. On the other hand, deep culture are the cultural norms that are not easily detected
unless, you are born and raised in that specific culture, or you spend an extended amount of time in
the foreign culture. Examples of deep culture would be rules, attitudes and feelings that are passed
down from generation to generation.
In my culture, the right hand is preferred for most of the social exchanges like shaking hands, ...

We are taught from young to never transgress another person's queue and to always respect their
personal space while queuing.
However, if I were to stay in this culture that does not observe the queue system, I will definitely
have to learn to be less defensive of my queue and practise more tolerance to their local behaviour
as long as it does not violate my basic ethics. I have to discard the ethnocentric notion that only my
cultural standard for behaviour is the best, and I should not pass any judgements as there will
inevitably be differences between my vision and those that I meet in my new surroundings.
Q3. What do you think will be the greatest benefit for you living and teaching in another culture?
What will be the greatest difficulty? How will this be important in your life after returning home? (If
you have already taught in another culture, what have been the greatest benefits and challenges for
you?)
The benefits of teaching abroad are numerous and often highly personal, because people choose to
teach abroad for many different reasons. In my opinion, the main benefits of teaching abroad are the
opportunities to immerse myself in different cultures, learn new languages, get paid to travel,
exchange cross–cultural ideas and experience professional success.
The greatest difficulty for me would be to learn how to manage my own nuclear family without the
physical support of my extended family. Being in a foreign country will

Statistical Analysis Of Variance ( Anova ) And Scott Knott...
2.5.3 Statistical analysis
Two tests were made: analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Scott–Knott multiple comparison test.
ANOVA was made with Microsoft Excel® software. Scott–Knott was conducted with Sisvar®
software to compare means (treatments statistically different). Both tests were made with a 95%
confidence limit.
2.5.3 Air permeability
Air permeability of the mortars was evaluated according to Thenoz method (Pereira and Camarini,
2011). Cylindrical specimens (50 mm diameter and 100 mm height) were prepared and cured at
room temperature for 28 days (average temperature of 25 °C ± 2 °C and relative humidity of 60%).
Before testing, the specimens were cut into three parts and the central part (50 mm height) was used
in the test. The slices were oven–dried at 50 °C ± 2 °C for 48 h and after cooling they had their
lateral surfaces sealed to guarantee the flow was uniaxial and perpendicular to the cross–sectional
area. The test was made in a varying charge apparatus. The average values of three specimens of
each mortar composition were reported. Air permeability was calculated by the Equation 1, which is
based on Darcy's law (Camarini et al., 2008).

The Creation Of A Utopian Civilization Essay
In an imperfect world such as ours, the idea of a utopia capable of satisfying all needs and desires
has been attempted to be made reality time and time again. However, few have succeeded because it
is difficult––if not impossible––to accommodate a large population of people with varying interests.
The key to maintaining a utopian civilization is ensuring that all basic needs are met in order to
avoid the overthrow of the established government regulation activity. The creation of 'Bentopia' is
centered around the goal to make the most efficient society possible while still allowing citizens the
freedom to choose. As the architectural committee, we strived to develop both public and personal
spaces that optimize the use of space in a non–wasteful manner, while also keeping in mind the
climate, geographical location of our city, and environmental impact our structures have. The way
we have organized houses, shopping malls, governmental and corporate buildings within our utopia
is meant to maximize resources we have on hand through the division of the city into three districts.
The most important considerations when creating a layout fit for a utopia fifty years into the future
is offering a comfortable, sustainable lifestyle while still retaining core values of free will and
equality. The practical distribution of material goods should not jeopardize basic rights that are
standard within an ideal society. When first approaching the dilemma on how to allot land, the urban

Essay about Retrial Queues Systems
Retrial Queues have been widely investigated in different frameworks by various researches. The
pioneer work on retrial queues can be found in the work of Purohit et al(2005) and survey papers by
Arteljo (2000) Choi et al. (1992) considered an M/M/1 retrial queueing system in which the retrial

Stteric Acid Purcules In A Monolayer
Purpose In this experiment, the different lengths of a steric acid molecules in a monolayer were
measured to determine Avogadro's number. The number of drops of stearic acid were calculated to
see how much it will take to make a monolayer on the surface of water on the dish. (Goldwhite and
Tikkanen)
Theory
The stearic acid is obtained from animal fats. The molecular formula is C17H35COOH and its
composed of a hydrophilic acid group, COOH, and a hydrocarbon chain C17H35. The long
hydrocarbon chain is like lubrication oil, because it does not have any affinity for water. In other
words, when the stearic acid becomes in contact with water it doesn't mix in water. The hydrophobic
chain floats upwards in a vertical position in the solution. (ChemSkills) When the stearic acid was
dropped to the water it spreads across the surface until it creates a monolayer, a one molecule thick
layer. The volume of stearic acid was calculated by determining the number of drops used to create
the monolayer on the dish by using the following equation:
V=(number of drops in monolayer ×(1 mL)/(drops per mL)×(concentration of stearic acid)/(1
mL))/(density of stearic acid)
We calculated the surface area of the dish to determine the length of one molecule by using the
following equations:
〖Surface Area〗_dish=π(d/2)^2
Length_(stearic acid)=V_monolayer/〖Surface Area〗_dish
The hydrocarbon chain is the part of the stearic acid molecules to form the monolayer of thickness

Pilgrim Case Essay
TO: Professor Simon FROM: DATE: May 19th, 2014 OBJECT: Equity Contribution for Pilgrim
Assurance Building On behalf of David Bailey, there have been individuals looking into the
property located at 795 Atlantic Avenue. As an investor, Bailey is interested in making an offer on
the property however he is trying to make his offer look more attractive than the competitors. With
thorough research, he has found ways that would improve the building and in turn generate a larger
yearly cash flow while still being able to improve the building. Bailey was also considering
converting the current office space building into condominium units but that was strictly dependent
on the revenue that could be generated from doing so. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
III. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS If Bailey were to outbid the competitors and successfully purchase the
building there are a variety of options that Bailey could engage in in order to improve the building.
The first option would be to keep Pilgrim as a tenant in the building. By doing this he would secure
100,000 square feet of space at $26 /sq. ft generating about $2,600,000 in rental income just from
Pilgrim. Also with keeping the space as office space, Bailey found that he would be able to fill in
two out of the four floors of the atrium adding an additional 10,000 in rentable square footage. This
was something that none of the other competitors had noticed. Bailey also noticed that he would be
able to renovate all 20 bathrooms within the building but that his renovation would be about 15,000
cheaper than his competitors. Continuing with the renovations, Bailey saw that the atrium would
need to be upgraded and instead of it costing him around $200,000, which would be the cost to his
competitors, he had the ability to save $50,000 by reusing the marble in the bathrooms as the floor
and walls of the atrium. Taking into consideration all of the upgrades and renovations, as well as the
fact that Bailey would be able to manage the building at 0.50/ sq ft compared to his competitors
which were managing at $1.25/ sq ft, the value at which Bailey would place on keeping the building
an office space would be $3,433,649.13 (see

to facilitate for the increased amount of residents and therefore new recreational areas and shops for
clothing, food and eating out would be established to account for the new populations able to live in
Nundah as a result of the residential developments. The residential developments would
accommodate for the growing population that increases by 3% per year. However, negatively
proposal two is not beneficial, as the development only accounts for a wealthy businessperson
demographic therefore limiting the diversity of people living in the area. The increased amount of
residents in Nundah would increase traffic and congestion as a result of not having anywhere to
park. Nundah would become overcrowded as a result and the cultural heritage of Nundah's previous
typical Queenslander type homes would be knocked down to make space for future development
sites. In addition, the elderly populations living in Nundah may not approve of the rapid increases in
populations and do not have the option or ability to live in unit style homes and will therefore be
forced out of the area. Economically allowing high–rise development is beneficial as it boosts the
local economy, as new businesses would be established and surrounding already established
businesses would gain more foot traffic due to increased population densities, which would
therefore increase the amount of profit being made. In addition, more employment opportunities

Differences Between Mass And Projected Area And Mass Of...
The last nine experiments listed in Table 1 have reported the projected area and mass of the
firebrands. Fig. 3 depicts the PDF and contour plots for OWB7. Figs. 3a and b, represent the PDF
for the firebrands at 4 meter and 18 meters from the fire front respectively. Considering Fig. 3c, we
can realize that the correlation between mass and projected area of firebrand is stronger than
projected area and the traveling distance of the brands. This fact is more obvious at closer distances.
Moreover, the analysis of results of this experiment shows that larger brands can fly further away
from the fire which sometimes is not in agreement with other experiments. The available data at 4
meter and 18 meter from the fire has been compared in Fig. 3d. We can observe that heavier brands
could travel further with the wind. In addition, it is understandable that the mean and standard
deviation values for mass and area of the firebrands at further distances are larger which means that
we have more variety of sizes there.
The PDF and contour plots for IWB1 are plotted in Fig. 4 and Fig.4a shows the PDF for both dry
and wet trays. Since we did not have access to individual brand information, using the presented
table in their paper, Table 7 here, we assume the average value of area for each category and for
S>4, we assumed the brand area is 5 cm2. The number of the brands in the wet tray is greater than
that of the dry tray since many brands have blown away from the dry tray and burned out

Southwest Airlines Flight From Baltimore Washington...
In order to visit my family in Rhode Island over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, I decided that
the quickest travel option would be to take a Southwest Airlines flight from Baltimore–Washington
International Airport (BWI) to T.F. Green Airport (PVD). Anticipating the high volume of people
also trying to travel during the holiday season, I decided to arrive at the airport couple of hours early
to ensure that I would be able to check my bags, go through TSA security, and have enough time to
go to the restroom before boarding for Southwest began. Between the time of arrival at the airport
and the time a plane leaves the gate for take–off, I noticed that within the airport, in order to
eventually board their respective aircrafts, travelers must navigate through multiple queues, which
are "line[s] of persons waiting in turn to be served, according, to order of arrival" (Mann, 3). In
engaging in these queues, passengers are participating in serially coordinated actions, in which
multiple people are attempting to do the same thing at the same time, such that some must wait
while others engage in the activity. After checking their luggage with their respective airlines,
travelers must go through the TSA Security Checkpoint in order to be admitted onto the concourse.
The process of moving through TSA could be considered a compound (sequentially linked) queue,
where a single larger action is accomplished over multiple queues. Once passengers move through

Literature Review On Waiting Line
2.0 Article review
Definition of waiting lines
Waiting line management refer to customers' personally while waiting in lines before receiving one
or more service delivery. (Sridhar, 2015)According to Taylor, a philosopher, waiting line is the time
from which a customer is ready to receive the service until the time the service commences. (Yan,
2006) The process of waiting may examine the attitude and behaviour of customer. According to
William James, a philosopher, 'the feelings of boredom will come into being as the time flies'.
(Maister, 2005)When waiting for a delivery of service, the interested on services of customer will
reduce as time passed.
Principles of waiting lines
There are eight principles of waiting lines that used to design for waiting lines. (Jensen, 2013) Eight
of the principles includes emotions dominate, which is provide feedback and explanation although

West Broadway, Or `` D Street ``
West Broadway, or "D Street", is a state–sponsored housing development in South Boston,
Massachusetts, whose history is plagued by delinquency, violence, and death. Constructed in 1949,
on a newly acquired 25–acre plot in Southie's "Lower End", West Broadway Housing Development
was to serve as temporary housing for veterans of the World Wars. By the early 1970s, however, the
development would be 972 apartments for low–income families, and would be known as the "worst

likely that most artifacts are lost forever because of the disregard for the area during development in
the 1950s, further exploration may be able to call attention to a distant history. Andrew Square too
went through radical development throughout the 20th century with no mention of Native American
presence, and I have not personally come across any literature concerning Indian history in relation

myself, gosh, I am not going to make this appointment. The person in front of me, looked at me,
turned back around not saying anything, so I went around her and tap the customer shoulder of the
person ahead of her, and in my sweetest voice asked if I can jump ahead of her to check out, due to
me having an appointment that I really needed to make. Once again, the customer said sure, and the
customer behind her gave me a look that was of complete annoyance. If looks could kill, I would
have been laying on the floor. The reaction to my violation of cutting lines in these stores and not
sticking to society's norm of waiting patiently for my turn was really uncomfortable, embarrassing,
and mortifying. The fear that someone would chastise and make a scene, to draw attention to what I
was doing was nerve wrecking.
"Perhaps the biggest influence on our feelings about lines, though, has to do with our perception of
fairness. When it comes to lines, the universally acknowledged standard is first come, first served:
any deviation is, to most, a mark of iniquity, and can lead to violent queue rage" (Stone, Alex.2012).
This deviant behavior of not conforming to the social

Atrium Fire Rate
Yi, Huo, Li and Feng & Chow [13] study the relationship between the time when flooding flow of
smoke occurs and the aspect ratio of atrium under different heat release rate (HRR) of fire,32
simulations were carried out using a "field" model, FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator, Version 3). The
size of the atrium and HRR of steady fire are listed in Table (2–4). In all the simulations, the size of
the fire room was set at 3 m × 3 m × 3 m, the fire was located at the center of the floor of the fire
room, the height of atrium was 27 m. The vents in the fire floor were both 2 m × 1.5 m with sill at 1
m above the floor. The ambient temperature is 20 oC.
Fig. (2–8) shows the situation of early stage when a fire occurs in an adjacent floor to an atrium. The
fire floor has two vertical vents (WA and WB) open to outside and the atrium respectively. The
ceiling of the atrium is open, and it is supposed that the isolation between the atrium and the other
floors is ideal. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The velocity profile at the vents is simply shown in Fig. 1. At the top of the vents, because the
smoke in the fire floor is lighter than the air in the atrium and outside, pressure difference between
the fire floor and outside (atrium as the same) is larger than at the lower place of the vents. At the
bottom of the vents, the pressure difference gets negative to that at the top. So there should be a
zero–pressure–difference or zero–velocity plane α and β at the two vents

Netflix Competitive Analysis
1. A key business goal was to reduce the cost of building the DVD library. One tactic used to
achieve this goal was to stimulate demand on older and lesser–know movie titles. Shifting demand
away from higher cost new releases drove down the average price of acquiring DVDs and improved
asset utilization. This produced increased margins and profitability.
To balance demand Netflix developed a proprietary recommendation system. The system enabled
the transition from a manual one–size fits all promotion approach to an automated data driven
marketing plan that delivered personalized recommendations across the entire movie library.
Effectively, the recommendation system outsourced the task of marketing to the subscriber. The

The use of technology has allowed Netflix to build a profitable business by taking advantage of the
uniform pricing – differential cost concept. They also leveraged technology to enhance the value
proposition and overcome the shipping delay and reduce the cost of building their DVD library.
Technology has enabled them to deliver a differentiated service based on the automation of key
processes. This in turn has built a competitive advantage over the traditional retail stores.
Several key processes, the supporting technology components, and competitive advantages include:

Shopper's Drug Mart Queuing Analysis

  • 1. Customer Queuing Systems The Customer Queuing Systems Luis A. Alvarado Business 425 Instructor Dr. Bates March 17, 2012 Abstract In this essay, two companies will be identified and described on how they utilize a queuing system. Only two of the four most basic waiting line structures will be discussed: single–server and multiple–server waiting lines. Since waiting is an integral part of many service related operations, it is an important area of analysis. Each queue system has its advantages and disadvantages, but with no doubt each company's goal is to cut down on the waiting time and that customer returns. In particular, we examine their implementation of both processes and try to find solutions to improve the waiting line process. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The multiple–server waiting line approach eliminates jockeying behavior. A single–line, multiple– server system has better performance in terms of waiting times than the same system with a line for each server. The multiple–line configuration is appropriate when experienced servers are used or when space considerations make a single–line model inconvenient. On the other hand, the multiple– service line system provides the customer the option of selecting his clerk, but check–out may be considerably slower (Jones, O'Berski, & Tom, 1980, p. 91). There are many ways to minimize customer wait times. One way to reduce customer wait time is to decrease the expected service time. This can be accomplished by identifying best practices among all the servers, standardizing processes based on best practices, and enhancing training to ensure that best practices are followed. Also, you may choose to offer employee incentives that encourage working faster as a way to decrease service time. Another way to impact customer wait time is to decrease the rate at which customers arrive to be served. If your service operation experiences peak service hours at certain times of the day when your customers prefer to be served, then management could offer the customer promotions geared to increase traffic during off–peak times. Finally, by adding more servers you will be able to reduce customer wait ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To obtain the appropriate function for predicting the queue waiting time we need a large numbers of observations. To obtain this data without the need to collect them directly, we simulate the bank work flow and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To guarantee our result we draw the distribution diagram of service time and number of people in the queue. The scattered diagram shows that we have different patterns of the distribution in different queue lines which supports our result. Next to determine if servers give service with the same distribution, we use Kruskal Wallis test again, we choose three different servers and do the test again. Kruskal–Wallis Test: service times versus server Kruskal–Wallis Test on service times server N Median Ave Rank Z 3 19 6.000 50.6 –0.07 4 24 7.500 54.3 0.64 6 7 5.000 42.3 –0.82 7 30 5.500 45.0 –1.34 8 21 8.000 59.0 1.41 Overall 101 51.0 H = 3.78 DF = 4 P = 0.437 H = 3.81 DF = 4 P = 0.432 (adjusted for ties) The p–value shows that there is no significant difference between the service times offered by the servers. For now we know that there is no significant between the service time in different days and service time offered by different servers so we choose two different days we check these data altogether. • 5. A Shopper 's Drug Mart Queuing System The topic of this report is an analysis of a Shopper's Drug Mart queuing system. At Shoppers Drug Mart, there are multiple places where queues are formed; regular check–out line, beauty check–out line, at the pharmacy and at the post office. For this analysis, we only looked at the two different check–out lines, the set of regular servers near the front of the store and also the check–out line for the beauty department. At this location, we noticed there were only two cashiers (servers) handling all the transactions for the regular check–out line at the time we went. The first customer arrived 00:36 or 36 seconds after the stopwatch began to run, hence that is their inter–arrival time. Customer 1 departed at 1:18 from when the stopwatch ran. By taking the difference between the departure clock time and arrival clock time, service time was calculated. This was done for all 15 customers. Arrival times and departure timesare in clock time because we observed their arrivals and departures by viewing a stopwatch. The final clock time noted is 11:36 (so 11 minutes and 36 seconds from when the clock first began) and that is the same time the final customer (customer 15) departed. After observing and collecting data regarding the regular check–out line, many values were calculated, including; average arrival rate, average service rate, average expected number of customers in the system, average expected number of customers in a queue, average expected number of customers in service, average expected time a customer spends in the system, average expected time a customer spends waiting in the queue and the average expected time a customer spends being serviced. Because the regular check–out line had 2 servers, the queuing model utilized was M/M/2/GD/∞/∞. Table 2 below once again illustrates the exponential data (See Appendix Figure 2) physically ... If so, you have a moisture problem in your attic or directly under the roof, and your roof may not be ventilated properly. There are a lot of concerns that may arise because you have poor ventilation that can damage the roof and put the people that work for you at risk. Here are a few reasons a commercial roofing professional needs to do an inspection in the space. Avoid Ice Damns Ice dams occur when there is hot air from the building hitting the roof, causing snow to melt. Once the snow melts but then the air causes it to freeze, you end up with ice on your roof. This prevents snow and rain from running off the roof properly, and can cause damage to the shingles ... • 11. Waiting Lines and Queuing Models Essay Waiting Lines & Queuing Models American Military University Business 312 For my project on other operations research techniques I have decided to research waiting lines and queuing models. My interest in this application stems from my personal dislike for standing in lines and waiting on hold while on the phone. This is virtually my only pet peeve; nothing aggravates me faster than standing in a line or waiting on hold. Like most people I go out of my way to avoid lines, using strategies such as arriving early or visiting during non–peak times. However, before investigating this topic, I had no idea there was a specific science behind the madness. Queuing models are important applications for predicting congestion in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (R. Cooper, 1981) My independent research will focus on call centers since I currently workin in one and because they utilize this application extensively. Call centers are the preferred way for many companies to communicate with their customers. The call center industry is vast, and rapidly expanding in terms of both workforce and economic scope. It is estimated that 3% of the U.S. and U.K. workforce is involved with call centers. In addition the call center industry enjoys a annual growth rate of 20% and, overall, more than half of the business transactions are conducted over the phone. (A. Mandelbaum, 2001) In basic models of call centers it is commonly assumed that the only parameters under the system manager's control are the number of trunks available (K + N) and the number of agents (N). In most contexts the cost of trunk lines is trivial compared to personnel costs, so in this paper we focus on staffing decisions (N), assuming that K = ∞ for modelling purposes. Thus busy signals are absent in the models to be considered. The classical M/M/N queueing model, also called the Erlang–C model, is obtained by further assuming Poisson arrivals, exponentially distributed service times and no abandonment. It is the model most often used in call center analysis. (O. Garnett, 2002) In probability theory, a Poisson process is a stochastic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Problem Definition FiWi (Fiber–Wireless) networks are designed using the wireless networks such as WLANs and fiber networks like PONs (Passive Optical Networks). Therefore FiWi networks having advantages of both users mobility support as well as high bandwidth. But the major problem with this networks is as the number of mobile user's increases, queueing delay is increasing in FiWi's Optical Network Unit (ONU). There are number of methods recently proposed for minimizing this queueing delay for bandwidth allocation. However, this methods are only working on PONs and WLANs and hence not considering the state of ONU. Therefore performance of FiWi networks is poor in terms of throughput and queuing delay. For any kind of FiWi networks improving its performance in terms of throughput is very vital. This can be possible by presenting the efficient queueing delay minimization method for FiWi networks. This is main research problem for this domain. 2. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although this is an innovative idea, there is a lot of wasted space in the cylinders and in the square box that it is packaged in. In this investigation, another idea for a container will be shown with a list of advantages and disadvantages. The aim is to create a new container for tennis balls that has a comparable surface area and wasted space to that of the cylinder containers currently used. Another container that could be used instead of a cylinder is a rectangular prism as shown below. This investigation will use measurement to calculate the surface area and volume of 3D objects, including a sphere and cylinder. The maths that was used to calculate the results ... Another assumption made was that the square box with rectangular prisms inside would have a considerably smaller amount of wasted space compared to the cylinder, but a small amount of wasted space would exist. As shown in the previous working out, there was no wasted space in the square box with the rectangular prisms. A final assumption made in part A was the dimensions of the cylindrical container. In part B, it was presumed that the points would be scattered loosely around the line of best fit. After creating the scatter plot, it was understood that the points were closely scattered around the line of best fit and a realisation that there could be a formula to calculate the results quicker was brought into consideration. Also, another assumption was that the amount of wasted space would not be a significant amount. After calculating, it was notable that the wasted space was more than half of the volume of the ... IB3200 SIMULATION INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2015: EXPERIMENTATION WITH THE SIMULATION MODEL ON A QUEUING PROBLEM GROUP 7 (TUESDAY 12–13) STUDENT NUMBER: 1121234 INTRODUCTION This report is a continuation of the group project which produced and analysed a working simulation model of the queueing problems at 'University House Restaurant' using Simul8. From the conceptual modelling of the group project, the model contents, which include the scope and the level of detail, and constraints, will remain the same as well as the simplifications and assumptions. Likewise, the validation and verification of the model are assumed to be reasonably accurate. However, some factors from the original report will be subject to change according to different scenarios during the experimentation. From the observations of the restaurant and the interview with a full–time employee, it was evident that the queueing problem was typical, especially for 'Today's special Hot–food menu' during the peak hours of Fridays between 12:00–14:00. This queueing problem affected the total time taken to be fully served, taking up to 7.7 minutes, which the problem was analysed in the group report. OBJECTIVES OF THE EXPERIMENT The setting of objectives for this report is to experiment with the simulated model by making various scenarios, and attempting to find the most efficient ways to make any improvements to achieve the objectives for the queueing problem at the University House Restaurant. • 23. Essay about Service Marketing Introduction In an ideal situation, customers would not have to wait for the delivery of products and services. However, in the real world, organizations cannot always match exact capability and demand; therefore, waiting is frequently inevitable while purchasing, especially in service marketing, as service firms can barely inventory their "stock" for sale at a later date (Lovelock, 1992, p.154). In general, waiting in lines – known as "queuing", happens when the number of customers arrive at a facility exceeds the capability of the system to serve them (Lovelock & Wirtz, 2011, p.260). When the consumer is waiting alone and have nothing to do, especially in an unfamiliar facility, the feeling of boring, uncertain about waiting time, stress and anxiety will be increasingly enlarged with time passing. Queuing also seems more burdensome if people feel physically uncomfortable. Moreover, because of a fear of "been forgotten", the senses of "get started" of customers are fervent. It is claimed that the anxiety level is much higher while waiting to be served than it is while being served, even though the latter queuing will be longer (Lovelock & Wirtz, 2011, p.267; Maister, 1985). Unpleasant waiting experience might accompany with customers go through the whole service process, which could lower the overall evaluation of service quality easily. Not only the queuing experience, a number of studies also investigated that queuing time in a service organization significantly influences consumer satisfaction. In general, increasing in waiting time is associated with decreasing in customer satisfaction (Katz, M.Larson & C.Larson, 1991). The graph (Dube, Renaghan & Miller, 1994) below shows the effect of waiting time on customer satisfaction in restaurant industry, and suggests that most consumers do not satisfied if the waiting time is longer than 8 minutes. • 28. Educational Facilities For New Building Code Regulations Educational facilities designed and built between 1950 and 1970 have come to a point in their building's life cycle that it is time for them to retire. These schools are no longer viable to keep running because of the financial strain to upgrade to new building code regulations. This means a flux of education construction is upon us. This also means that these schools, unless they are private, will be given a bond issue awarded by the state. Traditionally, schools are one of the tightest budgets to work with because they need to get the most for their money. One mindset that will save the owner money in the long term is thinking about life cycle cost and maintenance. One of the biggest issues with any new construction is the maintenance cost of running the building years after completion. Now this could mean many things from the HVAC to the paint on the walls. In schools, the interior finishes are not changed very often; therefore, need special attention. Today interior finishes are being selected more carefully in order to save money on maintenance cost, longevity, and durability. A big maintenance cost to schools is the flooring. Traditionally, schools have chosen vinyl composition tile, or VCT, for the majority of the flooring. When the schools were built sixty years ago this was the best option for longevity. Today that is not the case. In fact VCT flooring is no longer financially or ecologically efficient for the progressive future of educational facilities. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Under high traffic conditions, this works very well, and backpressure is able to fully utilize the available network resources in a highly dynamic fashion. Under low traffic conditions, however, because many other nodes may also have a small or 0 queue size, there is inefficiency in terms of an increase in delay, as packets may loop or take a long time to make their way to the destination. This is particularly of concern in intermittent encounter–based mobile networks which are already delay– limited due to the sparse and highly dynamic network connectivity. Such networks have proposed the use of redundant transmissions to improve delay, which do not work well when the traffic load is high. Routing protocol, such as Spray and Wait, that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The additional transmissions incurred by BWAR due to the duplicates utilize available slots which would otherwise go idle, in order to reduce the delay. Particularly for networks that are not energy– limited, this offers a more efficient way to utilize the available bandwidth during low load conditions. In order to minimize the storage resource utilization of duplicate packets, ideally, these duplicate packets should be removed from the network whenever a copy is delivered to the destination. Since this may be difficult to implement (except in some kinds of networks with a separate control plane), we also propose and evaluate a practical timeout mechanism for automatic duplicate removal. Under high load conditions, because queues are rarely empty, duplicates are rarely created, and BWAR effectively reverts to traditional backpressure and inherits its throughput optimality property. By design, BWAR is highly robust and distributed and does not require prior knowledge of locations, mobility patterns, and load conditions. The duplicate queues are maintained and utilized as follows: Original packets when transmitted are removed from the main queue; however, if the queue size is lower than a certain threshold qth, then the transmitted packet is duplicated and kept in the duplicate buffer associated with its destination if it is not full (otherwise no duplicate is created). This study was influenced by a similar experiment conducted by Helweg–Larsen & LoMonaco (2008) about queuing among U2 fans and their reactions to queue jumping. The experiment involved 49 participants who indicated they didn't drive a luxury car, in a Melbourne metropolitan petrol queue, 26 of whom were males, aged 18–58 years (M =33:82; SD = 11.26), in addition to this there were 23 females, aged ... This study is relatable to other research particularly one executed by Thoitis & Virshup (1997) in which groups of people were classified into "me's and "we's" and this is a clear representation for in–groups and out–groups. They discussed the notion that there is a sense of obligation and protection of one's own ingroup as they are willing to empathise with those perceived to be similar to the individual as oppose to the "we's" who were seen as dissimilar to the individual (Thoitis & Virshup, 1997). In terms of human behaviour, social identity theory and queue jumping can be closely interrelated as queue jumping has been was investigated by Helweg–Larsen & LoMonaco (2008). In this study U2 fans where given a questionnaire whilst waiting in an overnight line to obtain floor spots at his concert the following day. The purpose was to reflect on their reactions to line–intrusion and the results showed that the queue is a social system and line intrusion was most upsetting to fans with a greater the commitment; the more dedicated the fan the more upset they were by queue jumping (Helweg–Larsen & LoMonaco, 2008). In regards to queue jumping, there is much curiosity as to whether the social identity theory can be proven but little research. It is important to study reactions to ... • 46. Defining Culture Essay Defining Culture Q1. Explain the difference between surface culture and deep culture. Give examples from your own culture. Which do you think is more challenging to cope with as a foreigner? Why? Surface culture is essentially the cultural norms you can easily identify in a foreign country such as food and dressing. On the other hand, deep culture are the cultural norms that are not easily detected unless, you are born and raised in that specific culture, or you spend an extended amount of time in the foreign culture. Examples of deep culture would be rules, attitudes and feelings that are passed down from generation to generation. In my culture, the right hand is preferred for most of the social exchanges like shaking hands, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are taught from young to never transgress another person's queue and to always respect their personal space while queuing. However, if I were to stay in this culture that does not observe the queue system, I will definitely have to learn to be less defensive of my queue and practise more tolerance to their local behaviour as long as it does not violate my basic ethics. I have to discard the ethnocentric notion that only my cultural standard for behaviour is the best, and I should not pass any judgements as there will inevitably be differences between my vision and those that I meet in my new surroundings. Q3. What do you think will be the greatest benefit for you living and teaching in another culture? What will be the greatest difficulty? How will this be important in your life after returning home? (If you have already taught in another culture, what have been the greatest benefits and challenges for you?) The benefits of teaching abroad are numerous and often highly personal, because people choose to teach abroad for many different reasons. In my opinion, the main benefits of teaching abroad are the opportunities to immerse myself in different cultures, learn new languages, get paid to travel, exchange cross–cultural ideas and experience professional success. The greatest difficulty for me would be to learn how to manage my own nuclear family without the physical support of my extended family. Being in a foreign country will ... ANOVA was made with Microsoft Excel® software. Scott–Knott was conducted with Sisvar® software to compare means (treatments statistically different). Both tests were made with a 95% confidence limit. 2.5.3 Air permeability Air permeability of the mortars was evaluated according to Thenoz method (Pereira and Camarini, 2011). Cylindrical specimens (50 mm diameter and 100 mm height) were prepared and cured at room temperature for 28 days (average temperature of 25 °C ± 2 °C and relative humidity of 60%). Before testing, the specimens were cut into three parts and the central part (50 mm height) was used in the test. The slices were oven–dried at 50 °C ± 2 °C for 48 h and after cooling they had their lateral surfaces sealed to guarantee the flow was uniaxial and perpendicular to the cross–sectional area. The test was made in a varying charge apparatus. The average values of three specimens of each mortar composition were reported. Air permeability was calculated by the Equation 1, which is based on Darcy's law (Camarini et al., 2008). k = (μ/ρ.g).(s/S).ln(h0/h1).1/t Equation 1 Where: k = air permeability coefficient (m²); μ = air viscosity at the test temperature (Pa.s); ρ = density of water (kg/m³); g = specific gravity (m/s²); S = cross–sectional area of the sample (m²); s = cross–sectional area of capillary tube (m²); h0 = start water level (m); h1 = ... • 50. The Creation Of A Utopian Civilization Essay In an imperfect world such as ours, the idea of a utopia capable of satisfying all needs and desires has been attempted to be made reality time and time again. However, few have succeeded because it is difficult––if not impossible––to accommodate a large population of people with varying interests. The key to maintaining a utopian civilization is ensuring that all basic needs are met in order to avoid the overthrow of the established government regulation activity. The creation of 'Bentopia' is centered around the goal to make the most efficient society possible while still allowing citizens the freedom to choose. As the architectural committee, we strived to develop both public and personal spaces that optimize the use of space in a non–wasteful manner, while also keeping in mind the climate, geographical location of our city, and environmental impact our structures have. The way we have organized houses, shopping malls, governmental and corporate buildings within our utopia is meant to maximize resources we have on hand through the division of the city into three districts. The most important considerations when creating a layout fit for a utopia fifty years into the future is offering a comfortable, sustainable lifestyle while still retaining core values of free will and equality. The practical distribution of material goods should not jeopardize basic rights that are standard within an ideal society. When first approaching the dilemma on how to allot land, the urban ... The pioneer work on retrial queues can be found in the work of Purohit et al(2005) and survey papers by Arteljo (2000) Choi et al. (1992) considered an M/M/1 retrial queueing system in which the retrial time has a general distribution and only the customer at the head of the queue is allowed to retry for service. There has been rapid growth in the literature on retrial queues since then. Armero et al. (1998) deals with the statistical analysis from bulk arrival queues. • 54. Stteric Acid Purcules In A Monolayer Purpose In this experiment, the different lengths of a steric acid molecules in a monolayer were measured to determine Avogadro's number. The number of drops of stearic acid were calculated to see how much it will take to make a monolayer on the surface of water on the dish. (Goldwhite and Tikkanen) Theory The stearic acid is obtained from animal fats. The molecular formula is C17H35COOH and its composed of a hydrophilic acid group, COOH, and a hydrocarbon chain C17H35. The long hydrocarbon chain is like lubrication oil, because it does not have any affinity for water. In other words, when the stearic acid becomes in contact with water it doesn't mix in water. The hydrophobic chain floats upwards in a vertical position in the solution. (ChemSkills) When the stearic acid was dropped to the water it spreads across the surface until it creates a monolayer, a one molecule thick layer. The volume of stearic acid was calculated by determining the number of drops used to create the monolayer on the dish by using the following equation: V=(number of drops in monolayer ×(1 mL)/(drops per mL)×(concentration of stearic acid)/(1 mL))/(density of stearic acid) We calculated the surface area of the dish to determine the length of one molecule by using the following equations: 〖Surface Area〗_dish=π(d/2)^2 Length_(stearic acid)=V_monolayer/〖Surface Area〗_dish The hydrocarbon chain is the part of the stearic acid molecules to form the monolayer of thickness L. Pilgrim Case Essay TO: Professor Simon FROM: DATE: May 19th, 2014 OBJECT: Equity Contribution for Pilgrim Assurance Building On behalf of David Bailey, there have been individuals looking into the property located at 795 Atlantic Avenue. As an investor, Bailey is interested in making an offer on the property however he is trying to make his offer look more attractive than the competitors. With thorough research, he has found ways that would improve the building and in turn generate a larger yearly cash flow while still being able to improve the building. Bailey was also considering converting the current office space building into condominium units but that was strictly dependent on the revenue that could be generated from doing so. ... POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS If Bailey were to outbid the competitors and successfully purchase the building there are a variety of options that Bailey could engage in in order to improve the building. The first option would be to keep Pilgrim as a tenant in the building. By doing this he would secure 100,000 square feet of space at $26 /sq. ft generating about $2,600,000 in rental income just from Pilgrim. Also with keeping the space as office space, Bailey found that he would be able to fill in two out of the four floors of the atrium adding an additional 10,000 in rentable square footage. This was something that none of the other competitors had noticed. Bailey also noticed that he would be able to renovate all 20 bathrooms within the building but that his renovation would be about 15,000 cheaper than his competitors. Continuing with the renovations, Bailey saw that the atrium would need to be upgraded and instead of it costing him around $200,000, which would be the cost to his competitors, he had the ability to save $50,000 by reusing the marble in the bathrooms as the floor and walls of the atrium. Taking into consideration all of the upgrades and renovations, as well as the fact that Bailey would be able to manage the building at 0.50/ sq ft compared to his competitors which were managing at $1.25/ sq ft, the value at which Bailey would place on keeping the building an office space would be $3,433,649.13 (see ... The residential developments would accommodate for the growing population that increases by 3% per year. However, negatively proposal two is not beneficial, as the development only accounts for a wealthy businessperson demographic therefore limiting the diversity of people living in the area. Nundah would become overcrowded as a result and the cultural heritage of Nundah's previous typical Queenslander type homes would be knocked down to make space for future development sites. In addition, the elderly populations living in Nundah may not approve of the rapid increases in populations and do not have the option or ability to live in unit style homes and will therefore be forced out of the area. Economically allowing high–rise development is beneficial as it boosts the local economy, as new businesses would be established and surrounding already established businesses would gain more foot traffic due to increased population densities, which would therefore increase the amount of profit being made. Fig. 3 depicts the PDF and contour plots for OWB7. Figs. 3a and b, represent the PDF for the firebrands at 4 meter and 18 meters from the fire front respectively. Considering Fig. 3c, we can realize that the correlation between mass and projected area of firebrand is stronger than projected area and the traveling distance of the brands. This fact is more obvious at closer distances. Moreover, the analysis of results of this experiment shows that larger brands can fly further away from the fire which sometimes is not in agreement with other experiments. The available data at 4 meter and 18 meter from the fire has been compared in Fig. 3d. We can observe that heavier brands could travel further with the wind. In addition, it is understandable that the mean and standard deviation values for mass and area of the firebrands at further distances are larger which means that we have more variety of sizes there. The PDF and contour plots for IWB1 are plotted in Fig. 4 and Fig.4a shows the PDF for both dry and wet trays. Since we did not have access to individual brand information, using the presented table in their paper, Table 7 here, we assume the average value of area for each category and for S>4, we assumed the brand area is 5 cm2. In order to visit my family in Rhode Island over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, I decided that the quickest travel option would be to take a Southwest Airlines flight from Baltimore–Washington International Airport (BWI) to T.F. Anticipating the high volume of people also trying to travel during the holiday season, I decided to arrive at the airport couple of hours early to ensure that I would be able to check my bags, go through TSA security, and have enough time to go to the restroom before boarding for Southwest began. Between the time of arrival at the airport and the time a plane leaves the gate for take–off, I noticed that within the airport, in order to eventually board their respective aircrafts, travelers must navigate through multiple queues, which are "line[s] of persons waiting in turn to be served, according, to order of arrival" (Mann, 3). In engaging in these queues, passengers are participating in serially coordinated actions, in which multiple people are attempting to do the same thing at the same time, such that some must wait while others engage in the activity. After checking their luggage with their respective airlines, travelers must go through the TSA Security Checkpoint in order to be admitted onto the concourse. The dominant cost of waiting is an emotional one: stress, boredom, that nagging sensation that one's life is slipping away" (Stone. Alex, 2012).
