A press release written per a request from TLC President and CEO Annette Harwood Murphy announcing a new government position for her friend Jane Hill in Wellington, New Zealand. Released on Dec. 15, 2016.
1. Jane Hill named acting COO of Wellington City Council
INWOOD, W.Va. (Dec. 15, 2016) – TLC is pleased to share that Jane Hill, former Manager of Wellington City
Libraries Te Matapihi Ki Te Ao Nui in New Zealand, has been named acting Chief Operating Officer of
Wellington City Council, effective Dec. 23.
Jane was named Manager of the council-operated library system in 1994, overseeing library services for more
than a quarter of a million users in New Zealand’s capital city. In 2012, while continuing her involvement with
the city’s libraries, Jane was promoted to Group Manager of Wellington City Council’s Community Networks
Unit, which oversees the city’s Libraries and Community Spaces, Community Services, Customer Services,
Parking Services, Public Health, and Service Development and Improvement departments.
Kevin Lavery, Chief Executive Officer of Wellington City Council, praised Jane when announcing her selection
as acting COO. “Jane has done a great job in her current role, handling complicated issues such as bringing
Parking Services in-house, development of the new Johnsonville Library – which will bring together the library,
community center, and swimming pool to create a new civic heart in Johnsonville – and the business case for
the Central Library upgrade,” Kevin said. “Jane will bring many skills to the COO position: her deep
understanding of how the council operates, her contacts in the city, her strategic vision, and her broad
operational experience. Jane is a leader who challenges the status quo and offers a different perspective and
approach.
“Those that have worked with Jane know she is very customer focused and believes in the people around her,”
Kevin continued. “She’s a born and bred Wellingtonian and has a real passion for the city.”
The acting COO position is expected to be in place for up to six months, during which time Jane will oversee
approximately 1,200 city employees. “It’s good for younger women to see a woman at executive level,” Jane
said in an email to TLC President and CEO Annette Harwood Murphy. “It’s also good for librarians!”
Under Jane’s leadership, Wellington City Libraries implemented TLC’s CARL integrated library system, which it
continues to use for oversight of its growing catalog of 380,000 titles at 12 locations.
