ARISTOTLE : Definition 1: Philosophy begins with wonder. (Aristotle) Our study of philosophy will begin with the ancient Greeks. This is not because the Greeks were necessarily the first to philosophize. They were the first to address philosophical questions in a systematic manner. Also, the bodies of works which survive from the Greeks is quite substantial so in studying philosophy we have a lot to go on if we start with the Greeks. Philosophy is, in fact, a Greek word. Philo is one of the Greek words for love: in this case the friendship type of love. (What other words can you think of that have "philo" as a part?) Sophia, has a few different uses in Greek. Capitalized it is the name of a woman or a Goddess: wisdom. Philosophy, then, etymologically, (that is from its roots) means love of wisdom. But what exactly is wisdom? Is it merely knowledge? Nevertheless, whether Aristotle is correct or not, typically the elderly are more likely to be wise as they have more experience of life: they have seen more and hopefully know how to respond correctly to various situations. Philosophy is not merely confined to the old. Aristotle also says that philosophy begins with wonder and that all people desire to know. Children often are paradigm cases of wondering. Think about how children (perhaps a young sibling or a son or daughter, niece or nephew of your acquaintance) inquistively ask their parents "why" certain things are the case? If the child receives a satisfying answer, one that fits, she is satisfied. If not there is dissatisfaction and frustration. Literature Review An essential concern in special education is the attitudes and the views of teachers in regard to the involvement of the parents in facilitating the smooth learning process for special needs children. According to Berkant, Oz, and Atilgan (2019), the perceptions held by teachers can determine the degree of collaboration that exists between the teacher and parents of children with special needs. In a study to investigate the attitudes of teachers in regard to parental involvement in their children's education, Abdull, Seedee, Alzaidiyeen, Al-Shabatat, Alzeydeen, and AlAwabdeh (2011) found that in-service teachers have a positive attitude on parental involvement in the education of their children. Accordingly, many teachers are bound to support initiatives and programs that seek to foster teacher-parent involvement in facilitating a smooth learning process for children with special needs (Abdull et al., 2011). The study findings by Abdull et al. also indicated that older teachers are more likely to proactively support parental involvement in the education process of children with special needs. Notably, such elderly teachers have accumulated years of experience and, unlike young teachers, understand the special needs of these children and the role that active participation and involvement of the parent can play towards making the process of learning for these children a smooth one. In another study similar to that by Abdull et al., Dor and Rucker-Naidu (2012) investigated the attitudes of teachers on parental involvement. Using a sample of 56 elementary and secondary schools sampled from Israel and USA for comparison, Dor and Rucker-Naidu (2012) found that teachers perceive parental involvement in education as a voluntary undertaking in that parent of children with special needs as well as normal children can choose when and how to get involved in helping facilitate smooth learning for their children. Dor and Rucker-Naidu (2012) also found that teachers in both Israel and the United States are supportive of parental involvement, and many teachers are empowered by active parental involvement in the education process of children (Dor, 2013). Further, in a study that investigated teachers' perspectives of the varying factors that can have an impact on parental involvement in special education programs, Blackman and Mahon (2016) found that there are both in-school and out-of-school factors that can influence parental involvement in special education programs. In-school factors include processes and systems for parents consultations and discontinuation of programs, while out-of-school factors with the potential to influence parental involvement according to teachers are levels of collaboration and coping. Researchers have devoted much effort and resources to understand the role and the impact of parental involvement in the success of special education programs. There must be relevant statistics (expressing an unjust inequality, financial impact, lost efficiency, etc.), documentable discrepancies (e.g., two models that are difficult to reconcile), and/or other scholarly facts that point to the significance and urgency of the problem. The problem must be an authentic “puzzle” that needs solving, not merely a topic that the researcher finds interesting. 2. GROUNDED IN THE LITERATURE? Can the problem be framed in a way that will enable the researcher to either build upon or counter the previously published findings on the topic? For most fields, this involves articulating the problem within the context of a theoretical or conceptual framework. Although there are multiple ways to ground a study in the scientific literature, the essential requirement is that the problem is framed in such a way that the new findings will have implications for the previous findings. 3. ORIGINAL? For research doctorates (Ph.D.): Does the problem reflect a meaningful gap in the research literature? For the professional doctorates (Ed.D. and D.B.A.): Does the problem describe a meaningful gap in practice? 4. AMENABLE TO SCIENTIFIC STUDY? Can a scholarly, systematic method of inquiry be applied to address the problem? The framing of the problem should not reveal bias or present a foregone conclusion. Even if the researcher has a strong opinion on the expected findings, scholarly objectivity must be maximized by framing the problem in the context of a systematic inquiry that permits multiple possible conclusions.
