TRAINING MANUAL
Welcome to Belltower Books!

Belltower Books was founded in 2004 by two
           Cornell University undergrads
What began with two schools in one town has
grown to 700+ schools in 44 states
Our Business - Convenience

 Belltower Books strives to be different from every other
      buyback service
 By going to a seller’s location, rather than making them
come to us, we make his/her life easier
 You can buy books anywhere, from anyone - no other
      buyback can match us!
 We are an organization based on the virtues of hard work,
      honesty and transparency
 The better the customer experience, the more additional
business is generated by that customer and their friends
The Convenience Model
Our Team

 Buyers – The foundation of the book buying operation. Field
agents who purchase books from students.
 Campus Captains – Manage operations at the campus level
 Provide Buyers with cash, bags, stickers, advertising materials and
         guidance
 Report directly to the Regional Director
 Set locations that buyers are assigned for appointments
 Regional Directors – Provide support and guidance to
Campus Captains and Buyers. They have years of experience
and have been Campus Captains and Buyers themselves.

founded on the basis that this is the only fair compensation practice.

YOUR TOOLS
The PDA

 Every buyer is provided a
      Windows Mobile based PDA
      preinstalled with custom Belltower
      Books software
 This PDA is equipped with a
scanner to be used when scanning
      book bar codes (ISBNs)
   The PDA comes pre-loaded with a
      database containing every ISBN
      you could encounter
 An ISBN is a 10 or 13 digit number
found on (and imbedded in) a
books barcode as well as the
          copyright information page (found
at the beginning of every book)
The PDA

 The Belltower Books software is easy
    to use
 An ISBN is scanned into the ISBN
    Entry field
 If you type this by hand, hit ENTER
The PDA

 As you scan books, they can be seen in
    the ISBN List
 The last five digits of the ISBN,
followed by the price and the title of
    the book are shown
 Though we buy every book, those that
are too far out of print, custom
    published or International editions
come up as a “Quarter Book” with the
    price Q
 The PDA rounds the quarters up
 This does not mean that every quarter
becomes a dollar – if you have three Q
books, your total will be $1. If you have
five Q books, your total will be $2
The PDA

 When you have scanned all books, give the
customer the total and verify that they
    want to sell.
 If they agree, you MUST click Finalize
 When you do, you will be given a
confirmation of the number of books
finalized and the amount of the transaction
 ONLY give out the $ amount the PDA tells
    you to
 The PDA will lock you out if you finalize
    too many individual Q books
The PDA

 You will also be prompted to ask the
    customer for their email address
 For every valid, unique email address
you will receive a ten (10) cent bonus
    on top of your commission!
 Let the seller know that they will
receive a coupon worth 10% off
    purchases at belltowerbooks.com!
 A buyer can always decline if they do
not wish to give this information out
The PDA

 Once you complete a transaction the
Book Count at the bottom right of the
    screen will increase
 Watch this! If this number is not
changing, your transactions are not being
        recorded
 Also, if you click More at the bottom
left of your screen you will be able to
see the dollar total for all of your
    purchases
The Value

  Common Scenario:

               Other Buyback Belltower
 Microecon 32 30
 Physics 45 27
 Chemistry 20 30
 Biz Law 0 25
 English 1 .25 1
         2 0 1

 TOTAL $97.25 $109
The Value

   Convenience
       Buyback is more efficient
 Buyback occurs at customer’s residence

   Value
 Prices are competitive with nearly all other buyers
 Belltower may not have the highest price but…
Belltower buys every book = more money
The Customer

   Typical Objections
 “I will sell my books online.”
 Stealth costs: time spent listing, lug around books, wait for sale,
possibility that the buyer will return the book, trip to post office,
$3+ to ship, 18% commission to website
 “Why can’t you pay more for this book?”
 Belltower has developed a sophisticated algorithm that considers
the edition and market conditions amongst other factors for each
              book. Some books we can pay more than our competitors;
others we cannot. However, Belltower always buys every book!
 “Why is my quote so low?”
 Books are more than likely old editions, going out of edition,
              International Editions or Teacher Editions.
Audit Stickers

 Your Campus Captain will issue you
    Belltower Books bar code stickers.
 These stickers must be placed above the
    ISBN barcode of every book.
 If your PDA has any type of malfunction,
this is the backup method that we use to
audit your purchases. Making sure to
sticker every book guarantees that your
paycheck will be correct despite any
    technological difficulties.
 You will receive a five (5) cent bonus per
sticker if 98% of your books are
stickered correctly vs your PDA readout
 You are compensated based on the value
of stickered books received at our
    warehouse.
Bags

 Your Campus Captain will issue
    you Belltower Books canvas tote
    bags
 You must use these bags to hold
    your books
 Place books into the bag with
    spines aligned
 Fill the bags completely, they can
    be used for multiple appointments
 When a bag is full TIE two

and bring them to a secure
    location

    marketing strategies at your
    school because you understand
what people like and dislike on
    your campus
 Use that knowledge!
     Facebook!

 Do people look at fliers and
      quartercards or throw them
      away?
 Do people chalk to advertise?
The Campus Captain

 Our campus manager
 Has access to a bank account for
    buyback funds
 Should be in contact with you
    every day during buyback
 Picks up books from you daily,
