Abstract Background. Educability of motor skills and psychomotor education of normal children or those with mental or motor disabilities has a significant role in early educational intervention. The content and special methodology of motor and psychomotor development is generally associated with inherited motor skills or, as appropriate, the disorders produced by various dysfunctions. Aims. The growing and developing process of the child, either normal or dysfunctional, which could be affected and can influence psychomotor behavior, is more pronounced as the degree of the expression level of motor skills (i.e. gifted children) or conversely, if the deficiency is more profound. We can talk about the configuration of special educational objectives, for all categories of children: normal, gifted, or conversely, for those with impaired motor skills. Methods. The novelty of our research consists of a psychokinetic approach to the relationship between motor skills education and psychomotor education in the context of motor and physical education of children up to age of 12. We can even talk about psychokinetic complementary methods, associated and adapted to the usually psycho-pedagogical tools. Results. In this manner, the movement in all its forms related to global or fine motor ability of the children should and could became a very important prophylactic and therapeutic educational means, both of a prophylactic and therapeutic nature at early schooling. Conclusions. Psychomotor learning exceeds the physical education context, as a discipline, being encountered in various instrumental learning activities extended to other curriculum areas as a contributing factor and precursor of the development of the child’s operating intelligence. 46 Reprinted from Young Children • July 2011 Behaviors That Still Challenge Children and Adults Developing Young Children’s Self-Regulation through Everyday Experiences ® 1, 2, 3 As university faculty, I often collaborate with teachers when young children experience learning or behavior challenges. Every child is different. Some have difficulty express- ing their ideas verbally. Some struggle to get along with peers or follow classroom routines. In each case, however, one thing is the same: improved learning and behavior requires strong self-regulation skills. According to Ellen Galinsky, president and co-founder of the Families and Work Institute and author of Mind in the Making, regulating one’s thinking, emotions, and behavior is critical for success in school, work, and life (2010). A child who stops playing and begins cleaning up when asked or spon- taneously shares a toy with a classmate, has regulated thoughts, emotions, and behavior (Bronson 2000). From infancy, humans automatically look in the direction of a new or loud sound. Many other regulatory functions become automatic, but only after a period of intentional use. On the other hand, intentional practice is required to learn how to regulate and coordinate the balance and motor movements needed to ride a bike. Typically, once one learns, the skill becomes automatic. The process of moving from intentional to automatic regulation is called internalization. Some regulated functions, such as greeting others appropriately or following a sequence to solve a math problem, always require intentional effort. It is not surprising then that research has found that young children who engage in intentional self-regulation learn more and go further in their education (Blair & Diamond 2008). Children develop foundational skills for self-regulation in the first five years of life (Blair 2002; Galinsky 2010), which means early childhood teachers play an important role in helping young children regulate thinking and behavior. Fortunately, teaching self-regulation does not require a separate curriculum. The most powerful way teachers can help children learn self-regulation is by mod- eling and scaffolding it during ordinary activities. In this article I define self-regulation and discuss how it develops. I then describe an interaction I observed in a kindergarten classroom and explain how the teacher used an everyday experience to strengthen children’s self-regulation. What is self-regulation? Self-regulation refers to several complicated processes that allow children to appropriately respond to their environment (Bronson 2000). In many ways, human self-regulation is like a thermostat. A thermostat senses and measures temperature, and compares its reading to a preset threshold (Derryberry & Reed 1996). Affect plays a significant role in social cognition and judgments (Forgas, 2002). Affective states determine how we feel and, in turn, determine how we respond to our environment and deal with interpersonal stressors( Forgas, 2002). People acquire affective responses toward social stimuli. Affect also plays a role in how people represent themselves into their social experiences (Forga, 2002). Whereas, creativity is a trait that all to most humans possess. As there are many ways to encourage or enhance creativity or creative outlets to assess, deal, or address recurrent daily interpersonal issues (Onarheim &Frijs-Olivarius, 2013). Is affective creativity more important than cognitive learning or rational thinking in solving this type of problem? Why or why not? I believe affective creativity is especially important in resolving interpersonal issues. A study developed by Isen and colleagues (1987) demonstrated that positive affect promotes creativity and problem solving (Isen, Daubman & Nowicki, 1987). This approach to motivation suggests that individuals orient themselves to their surroundings according to their beliefs and expectations. Using this approach, the lack of motivation in the student I interviewed can be explained as a function of belief or perceived attitude. According to this theory, students’ achievement-related choices are determined by subjective task values. Task values can be described as to how useful important and enjoyable a person perceives a task. Expectancy is how confident a person is in their ability to perform a task. Attribution theory The student interviewed, John Brooks has been faced with challenges in scoring a high GPA in as a result of lack of motivation. The attribution theory in regards to motivation can be used to understand and examine motivation in this academic setting. It can be used to examine John’s reactions to bereavement and correlate that to subsequent motivation. In the process of understanding the academic environment, this theory can be used to understand how past events influence how students react to events in the future. The attribution theory also explains the association of certain emotional responses, such as bereavement with various causal dimensions. The psychological responses that John is going through after losing his only brother have negatively affected other behaviors in his life, such as academic performance. Social Cognitive Theory In the social learning theory, Albert Bandura explains the role of classical and operant conditioning in learning. John has incorporated this into his learning schedule by creating a rewarding mechanism. Behaviorism in psychology has been used to explain almost all aspects of human psychology, including learning. Everything in learning falls under stimuli and responses. John is motivated to work hard because he has promised himself an incentive upon achievement of the laid goals. However, this demoralizes him when he falls short of achieving his goals. The occurrence of incentives in his learning schedule ensures that John stays on track and increases the recurrence of the good behavior. Goals and Goal Orientations Goals orientation is an approach to achievement motivation used in social-cognitive approaches to learning. To enhance motivation, John should set performance and mastery goals in his learning objectives. The goal orientation approach can be used to explain why John engages in various academic works. This could explain her desire to protect and her sons from harmful aspects of life and John’s harsh disciplinary measures. The therapist must be aware of stereotyping and learn how to recognize diversity issues and work with John and Mary in the context of their worldview. It is an ethical obligation for counselors to develop sensitivity to cultural differences (Corey, 2013). While John’s style of discipline may be culture-laden, the therapist must look at his or her own professional obligation according to the legal and ethical code of the state in which they work. Listening with an Open Mind Narrative therapists must listen to clients without judgment or blame, affirming and valuing them. They now offer services such as UberEATs which delivers food from local restaurants (Ubereats.com, 2018). To understand Uber’s main competitors and market structure, it is important to understand some of the history behind taxi companies, especially in major cities. Taxi cab drivers had a monopoly prior to Uber entering in many cities such as New York. In 1937, New York City passed the Haas Act which established a licensing system to influence supply. The system required taxi drivers to purchase a medallion in order to operate. The government sells limited numbers of medallions which allows them to control competition and entry into the market. This is at the expense of consumers since it restricts supply and keeps costs high. Despite a growing population, the number of available medallions has remained partially fixed, only increasing marginally. Taxi drivers with a medallion enjoy high profits and have fewer incentives to ensure satisfaction. Today, the number of medallions in New York City remains capped, maintaining a barrier to entry. 1. Brain Development Brain-based education suggests that physical exercise is important for brain development. Research has shown that in addition to physical exercise, other activities focus on stimulating the social development and intellectual development of young children. Gerry, who is still incapable of jumping with both feet, may not be invited to join in a game of jump rope. This is an example of how a child’s individual characteristics (motor skills in this case) can affect context (social environment) and influence development (LeFrancois, 2012). Reflect back on your own development as a child, or on the development of a child you know, and provide an example of how individual characteristics affected development. Using the text and other scholarly resources, provide some suggested activities or strategies that would provide the necessary support to enhance the affected development. For example, Gerry’s teacher notices she is being excluded from the game of jump rope and intervenes by showing Gerry how to twirl the rope. Gerry is now included socially, despite her delayed motor development.
