TIG Customer: Nye County
Location: Nevada
TIG Solution: IT Network Infrastructure

Don Prue is the Network Engineer for Nye County, Nevada. He assumes all responsibility for the
IT network elements for the county, and determines the needs for network security, researches the
best solutions and manages implementation, configuration, and generally keeping the network
up to date and current with the demands of maintaining an entire county’s IT network
infrastructure. Nye County is geographically the largest county in Nevada and one of the largest
counties geographically in the U.S. There are three major sites within the county for the Nye IT
team to support, which include the cities of Pahrump, Tonopah and the town of Beatty. There are
public safety officials as well as administration staff at all of these locations, which includes the
Nevada test site.

Prue, along with Nye’s small IT group of only six staff members, supports all Nye County
administration and public safety sites. Additionally, this group needs to ensure that they are in
compliance with many revised statutes in the state of Nevada and that the county adheres to
security regulations. This includes making sure the network is secure, maintaining network uptime
and ensuring that the network is always functioning at peak performance.“This is very important
for administration and public safety,” said Prue. “We need
to make sure that the Public Safety network is working at
                                                                 “TIG did a wonderful job
top efficiency at all times.”
                                                                according to the size,
The Nye County network infrastructure was originally scalability and the money

requirements or regulations changed. Email for example,
was a Linux system with no backup. “We were terrified
                                                                state of the art network,
every day that we were going to lose email,” said Prue. which was our goal.”
Additionally, there were aging Linux boxes providing DNS
services for the county, firewalls and also for the AS400. “There had been little maintenance, and
the network was slow and unreliable”, said Prue. “But we were limping along the best we could,
hoping for funding.”

The IT Director at Nye County heard about Technology Integration Group (TIG) through another
TIG customer, who recommended TIG. Nye County engaged TIG to provide an assessment and
current state analysis, which included recording network traffic and analyzing busy times for their
existing voice network, and documenting reliability across the network. TIG’s team of experts
engineered a state of the art network architecture that was aligned specifically to the needs of Nye
County and the available budget. Furthermore, TIG created a gap analysis, which showed where
Nye County was compared to current network environments, and what concerns they needed
to address, and what to do to get there. TIG presented an enterprise roadmap that addressed
these concerns. TIG’s Enterprise Roadmap is an integrated approach to providing clients with IT
solutions that meet the needs of their entire organization. TIG practice areas such as security,
networking, enterprise storage and virtualization, along with Unified Communications are all tied
together by the integrated solution that is ultimately developed for the customer and aligned to
their business initiatives.

Based on the analysis and recommendations, Nye County was able to procure the funding to
implement the critical components of a network refresh project. The solution entailed rebuilding
the network core for redundancy, reliability and future growth. “Prior to the project, there was no
redundancy built into the network, so the core was the number one function we had to get
rebuilt,” said Prue.“TIG did a wonderful job according to the size, scalability and the money we had.
Now we have a state of the art network, which was our goal. We still need to find funding for other
projects such as VoIP, but we will.”

The architecture for the updated network at Nye County now includes a multi-tier network model
using Cisco infrastructure. “Where there was previously no reliability, we now have redundancy.
Where we had end-of-life equipment we now have new high performance equipment,” said Prue.
“The difference that the network has made at Nye County has been noticed across the board.
Access to business applications has improved, and users are thrilled because of the increased
network speed.”

For the IT staff at Nye County, the updated network has changed things a lot. “We were in a
reactive mode since I started at Nye County four years ago,” said Prue.“Now we don’t have to panic
every day that if this fails we are dead in the water. I also have the ability to administer and monitor
the network from my desk. We have really moved from a reactive mode to a proactive mode.”

About working with TIG, Prue says“I think our TIG rep is a workaholic. He digs in like a bulldog with
a bone. Even on his own time he will stick with me on the phone and help me solve a problem.
The engineering team that I have worked with at TIG on this project has been very professional
and extremely experienced. Their project methodology to upgrade a fully operational county
network with minimal down time or impact to our operations was incredible. They really care
about us as a customer, and have been extremely knowledgeable and responsive. When projects
come up in the future I will fight to work with TIG, and I would recommend TIG as a solution
provider to anyone.”
