This document outlines the rules for categorizing objects found in a kitchen drawer into 5 groups: measuring instruments, utensils, containers, pen and paper products, or thermal protection. Objects will be inspected and placed into the group that corresponds to their intended purpose, such as whether an object measures quantities, assists with food preparation, holds food, is made of paper, or protects surfaces from heat. Examples are provided for what types of items fall under each group.

2. The Rules
• Each object will be inspected to see which of
the following 5 groups it belongs to:
– Measuring Instrument
– Utensil
– Container
– Pen & Paper Products
– Thermal Protection

3. • Measuring instrument: Does the object serve
the purpose of measuring specific quantities?
• Utensil: Does the object serve the purpose of
assisting with specific food preparation in the
kitchen?
• Container: Does the object serve to hold food for
a substantial amount of time and have a lid for
covering/protection?
• Pen & Paper Products: Does the object write/ is
it made of paper?
• Thermal Protection: Does the object serve the
purpose of protecting a surface from heat?

4. Measuring Instruments
These items measure varying amounts of teaspoons and cups.

5. Utensils
-opens cans
-presses garlic
-picks up food
-cuts & serves
-flips food
-stirs food
-scoops melon
-peels vegetables
-scoops ice cream

6. Containers
Each vessel holds food for an unlimited amount of time.
Food is covered and protected by a lid.

7. Pen & Paper Products
The Post-it Notes and magazine are made of paper; the pen is designed for
writing.

8. Thermal Protection
The potholder protects your hand’s surface from heat. The
trivet protects the counter’s surface from heat.
