5. Japan before WWII
Japan by 1900 was engaged in
industrialization. Japan was
becoming a society that mass
produced manufactured goods.
Japan lacks Natural resources.
Natural resources are necessities
like oil, coal, minerals, timber, etc.
They are necessary for
industrialized economies.
6. Expansion in South East Asia
Japanese Expansion in Southeast
Asia happened to obtain Natural
Resources since it relied on trade
for these resources from the west
like the United States.
Raw materials are necessary for an
industrial economy. Therefore,
Japan attacked and took over
Korea (1910), Manchuria (1931),
parts of China(1930’s), Indochina,
etc.
7. Japanese American Relations.
Diplomacy between the U.S and
Japan sought to ease tensions. U.S
disliked Japanese Aggression
because of American trade
interests in China and American
possessions in the region.
(Philippines)
Diplomacy failed and their
relationship deteriorated after the
U.S stopped selling oil to Japan.
8. Japanese Attacks
Since Japan was no longer receiving
oil and did not plan to cease its
operations, it moved to obtain other
oil sources in the Dutch East Indies
and Malaya.
Japan attacked the American fleet at
Pearl Harbor since Japan expected
the U.S to eventually attack since
Japan ignored U.S demands. The
attack happened December 7,
1941.
