Due to a lack of federal support in combating unauthorized immigration, Arizona passed its own law (SB1070) which faced legal challenges from the federal government and boycotts from private industry. While some provisions were allowed to go into effect, controversial parts of the law that allowed police to request immigration papers were temporarily blocked by a federal court ruling. The legal battle over whether federal law takes precedence is expected to reach the Supreme Court, while other states have also taken actions related to immigration.
