Arizona's frustration with failures in the federal immigration system and issues along the Arizona-Mexico border led Governor Jan Brewer to sign SB 1070 in 2010, allowing police to check immigration status during stops. While a judge blocked parts of the law from taking effect, such as racial profiling, other provisions moved forward. Arizona's actions inspired over two dozen other states to introduce similar bills, as states increasingly passed immigration-related laws due to perceived federal inaction.
