Dear Judges:
Hello, I am John Campbell. I am a huge people person and I am very social. It has been
my dream to go to Clemson University since I was in middle school. I was very excited
to see that I had been accepted to Clemson but the out-of-state tuition is very expensive
so I am unsure of where I will be going. I am still trying my hardest to get through to go
to Clemson and major in biology. Upon graduation from a four year school I plan to
move onto a medical school and study dermatology. After graduating medical school I
plan to move to a bigger city such as Chicago or Los Angeles and open a practice. For
my senior project I hosted/organized a 5K in memory of a nine year old girl named
Abigail Kelley who died of brain cancer on June 18, 2012. I decided that all of the
proceeds for the 5K would benefit Cure It For Kids – a non-profit organization. Cure It
For Kids funds the brain tumor research center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. I
chose to organize this 5K as my senior project because I saw the struggles Abigail went
through as a child – she never got to experience an actual childhood.
My product was the actual 5K. I had approximately 430 people register to run/walk. For
my research paper I researched the problems some charities may face with fraud. I was
able to study how people can be aware if the organization is fraudulent. When
researching charities to donate the money to, I knew all of the signs to look out for – this
is the relation to my product and my research paper. I did not have any real obstacles
keeping me from having a successful event besides the stress of the whole process. In the
end, I raised $12,677 to go to Cure It For Kids!
My senior project relates to the career field of Event Planning. What I learned from my
senior project is that I do not want to go into this field in the future, however I would like
to organize events as a side hobby. Event planning brings along too much stress that I
would not be able to handle on a daily basis. Also, after looking into the pay that Event
Planners earn, the salary and the stress are just not worth the time. To be honest, I never
actually wanted to go into this career field. I love to plan events and it was for a very
worthy cause so I was experimenting on if I would continue to plan such events in the
future and as I previously stated, I will.
While senior project was very stressful and a little tedious, I think it somewhat benefitted
me only because I was able to donate such a large sum to a very worthy cause. Honestly,
I do not really understand how senior project would help someone decide on a career
2. field that they would like to pursue. If I had to continue this project in the future, I would
not. This project brought on too much stress especially for senior year when students are
already stressed as it is. The reason I say this is because this senior project definitely had
a negative impact on my grades and seniors need to be focused on college and
maintaining a good GPA so they can be admitted to a good college. Thank you for your
time and cooperation in participating for the judging of senior projects!
Sincerely,
John Allen Campbell
