In 1663, Hooke observed the structure
of a thin slice of cork using a
compound microscope that he built
himself.
Described it as having a perforated
and porous surface like honeycomb.
He called it as cellulae.

11. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723)
Invented a simple microscope with one
lens.
He was the first to observe living cells.
Leeuwenhoek used his microscope to
look at pond water. He was surprised
to see one-celled organisms, which he
called animacules, meaning little
animals.

In 1838, Matthias Schleiden, a
German scientist concluded
that all plants are made of
cells.

14. Rudolf Virchow
In 1855, a German doctor, Rudolf
Virchow proposed that new cells are
formed only from existing cells.
“All cells come from cells” wrote
Virchow.

All organisms are composed of one or
more cells, within which processes of

Cells are the smallest and basic units of
structure and function in organisms.
Cells arise only from previously existing
cells.
