Drag Racing Basics - Arizona Drag Racing Association Regulations

2. Jason Simpson of AZ is the owner of New Deal Used
Cars, a used-car dealership rated highly with the
Better Business Bureau. Actively involved with
automobiles both professionally and privately, Jason
Simpson of AZ is affiliated with the Arizona Drag
Racing Association and enjoys the sport of drag
racing.
In drag racing, two cars participate in an
acceleration contest on a straight track, or drag strip,
that stretches over a measured distance. The Arizona
Drag Racing Association (ADRA) holds tournament-
style races each year from January through
November, which are open to both members and
nonmembers of the association.
3. However, an additional $5 charge applies
to nonmembers, and they are ineligible to
participate in the ADRA’s point series, which
gives awards to high-ranking drivers who
have accumulated the most points for wins
at the end of the season. When possible,
the ADRA concludes the season with a
Memorial Race held in mid to late
November.
4. Races are conducted elimination style, with
the winning racers from each heat pairing up
until only one remains. An electronic device
called a Tree or a Christmas tree signals the
beginning of the race. Named for its
multicolored Christmas tree-like LED lights, the
Tree consists of seven lights on either side of the
track that also record the drivers’ positions on
the track. In each race, the race directors
monitor driver performance in terms of speed
and elapsed time, although the winner is
typically the driver who crosses the finish line
first.
