Suez Canal Supply Chain mini case
1. THE SUEZ CANAL SCM CASE
Egypt's Suez Canal was blocked by a huge container
ship on 21 March 2021. This giant ship, The Ever
Given, caused a major traffic jam in one of the world's
busiest waterways. The ship which has the length of
four football pitches, became wedged across the canal.

2. Egypt's Suez Canal, blocking one of the world's busiest trade routes for a few
days. It caused delays among the ships from Asia to Europe that use the Suez
Canal as a short-cut to Europe or vice –versa, as an alternative to using the
longer shipping route of Asia>Africa>Europe or Europe>Africa> Asia by sea.
After almost a week blocking the Suez Canal, a a 400m-long (1,300ft)
container ship was finally on the move again. The Ever Given,
operated by Evergreen Marine Corp, became stuck last Tuesday
during a sandstorm.
For days it was lodged diagonally on one of the world’s
key shipping lanes, causing traffic to build up and other
ships to be rerouted.
But now, after an operation involving tug boats and dredging, the vessel is fully
refloated and heading north.
