Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor known for his contributions to the design of modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply systems. Some of his major inventions included the AC induction motor and Tesla coil. He established Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing in 1887 which developed an AC system that was eventually chosen over Thomas Edison's direct current system to power the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Though his ideas faced skepticism later in life, Tesla is now recognized for revolutionizing power transmission and ushering in the Second Industrial Revolution through his AC patents.
